Michael is a great teacher and I look forward to my clarinet lessons each week. He is patient and explains the technical parts of playing very clearly. He gives good tips and teaches at an appropriate pace.
My 11 year daughter, M, plays tenor saxophone in her school Music band/ orchestra class this semester. She asked for help. She and I both signed up for lessons with Josh a month or so ago. It has been truly amazing. Josh is a knowledgeable, patient, and effective teacher. And affordable! M now averages 98+ in her music class. We have a weekly father-daughter activity; practice together; listen attentively to Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane & Ben Webster, amongst others together; & planning to perform Holidays tunes this season. I highly recommend Josh.
Do not hesitate to work with Ken, he is a wonderful teacher! My 14-year old son has been taking alto sax lessons with Ken for over a year and will be entering high school in September. I can see Ken being a long-term fixture during my son's high school years. Ken is incredibly talented and loves to share his knowledge and experience with his students. He does it very well. He is VERY easy to work with and he has a great sense of humor, which my son loves. My son very much enjoys his lessons. In working with my son, Ken has upped my son's "game" in so many ways and I can't wait to see what the future holds musically for him. Ken came highly recommended to me and for good reason. He opens up new worlds and new doors for his students. He is very invested in his students' lessons and wants the best for them. If you have the opportunity to work with Ken, take it.
I had a great lesson with Jim. By the end of the first class I'd been able to try a few different types of saxophones and just about play notes on each of them, despite never having even held a Saxophone prior to that. He had a very relaxed style and even took the time to suggest music to listen to once the class had finished. I'd definitely recommend classes with him to friends or anyone else wanting to learn.
I have been taken (soprano-) saxophone lessons from Furmi Gómez in 2014 and 2015 in the Netherlands until he moved to NYC. This period has been a great pleasure for me. Not only is he a skill-full educated musician on all saxophones, he is also capable, with great patience, to teach the less capable and not so talented pupils, like myself ( I'm in my fifties and have some self-knowledge). Central was the joy in making music and making it sound better, getting my pitch correct; getting the best out of me and and my instrument. The lesson were in good equilibrium between practice and learning to play new music. There never was any restriction on the kind of music: classic , jazz or blues. Furmi Gomez furthermore is a very friendly person and it was a great joy taking lessons from him. Carl Schoof, The Hague Netherlands.
I have been taking private saxophone lessons from Sagi since April. In a matter of few weeks, I've gone from not being able to know how to hold the alto sax correctly to playing some tunes and reading music. While teaching, he is patient and focused. He is also flexible with scheduling lessons. I would highly recommend him.
I came to Kevin because I was looking to take lessons with someone who could not only teach and play well, but also someone with whom I could relate as a student and a younger player in the jazz world. Kevin has surpassed all of my criteria for a great teacher and I've found that his suggestions help me to approach my playing in totally new ways, looking at both the theoretical and anatomical aspects of saxophone playing. When I first decided to take lessons with Kevin, I just wanted a different type of experience from the lessons I was taking with a professor at New England Conservatory. In the end, I found that Kevin was more accessible and friendly as a teacher and as person than most of my previous jazz mentors. His playing ability and friendliness are only matched by his massive wealth of jazz knowledge and passion for music, evidenced by his brilliant blog. I highly recommend Kevin to any student of jazz who wants a knowledgeable, masterful, and down-to-earth teacher.
Jenny Hill has been my son, Gabriels, private alto sax teacher for over 5 years. She is an accomplished professional musician and an experienced teacher. She has coached Gabriel through musical challenges and prepared him for auditions. She was key in helping him get accepted to LaGuardia High School. Jenny has the right touch to get the most out of her students. She is encouraging and has realistic professional advice. Jenny has been a consistent positive influence on Gabriels musical growth, both in terms of technical development and creative expression. She is a great communicator regarding scheduling and is always a pleasure to talk to. Her positive attitude and enthusiasm is contagious.
Noel was very responsive and easy going when setting up the first meeting. He was very kind and patient in explaining everything, starting from the very basics (this was my first lesson with no prior experience and very little-to-no knowledge about notes etc) what kind of mouthpiece to purchase, how to put it on correctly, the basics of the instrument itself etc. The lesson felt very comfortable and informative. Noel was friendly and encouraging and seemed very experienced and passionate about the sax and teaching the magical musical ways! I'm looking forward to our next lesson together
I had the privilege of working with Yuma in the summer of 2014. We decided that we would exchange lessons; I would teach him drum set fundamentals and he would teach me jazz theory. I showed him some basic rudiments, and basic grooves from the jazz and rock idiom. He helped me get a jumpstart on theory by teaching basic jazz chord voicings and the ii-V-I chord progression, and challenging me to take it on 12 keys. This was essential because it helped me stay current with my jazz piano and jazz theory class that I took that following fall semester! And at times after we exchanged instruments, we just had a jam session with him on tenor sax and me on drums. Not only is he a fantastic teacher...he's an awesome musician as well!
Pat is an exceptional artist and we feel extremely lucky that our son has him as a teacher. Pat has been giving saxophone lessons to our 11 year-old son for the past 6 months, and he's proved to be an extremely nice person but also a very skilled and supportive pedagogue. Our son has made consistent and quick progress, and we're always impressed to see how excited he is in anticipation of his weekly lessons. Pat's teaching obviously inspires him tremendously and it is an additional incentive for him to practice during the week. We've seen Pat in concerts on several occasions and he is an astonishing saxophone player, who cares for music at the most profound and almost existential level. Our son clearly feels this passion in Pat, and he feels emboldened and empowered by his lessons with him. Thanks to Pat, music for our son has become "his thing", something that he can turn to aside from school and homework. We hear him practice, and then improvise for fun like he does with Pat. These are truly priceless moments.
Laura has given me saxophone lessons for many years. I find her approach very helpful to me, and she also takes into consideration what I am working on. She gives me lessons on Skype or in person, and we play a lot during the lesson, utilizing the theme of the current lesson. For example, if I was working on a blues in every key, she would have me review the blues structure, then play the head and solo on it in a few keys. If she was demonstrating how to deal with two chord changes with common chord tones, she would have me play the tune with that in mind as I solo on it. Rhythmically we are working on Brazilian rhythms currently, so she is having me work on some bossas using the specific samba or bossa rhythm during my solo. I start with vocally doing the rhythm, and then do it on the sax using one note, and then do it with the chord scale, eventually doing a solo in the rhythm I am trying to master at the time.I take away a lot every time I have a lesson, and enjoy working on the assignments she gives me.
Fantastic! I was nervous about taking lessons for the first time but Gioel made me feel really comfortable. After only two lessons I already feel like I've begun to really learn the sax and I'm excited to continue learning. It doesn't hurt that he's very friendly and handsome too! Ha
Josh is a very talented musician and teacher. He is patient and personable with my son, who is 10 yrs old and just started learning to play the Clarinet. Josh offers many clever analogies to help my son grasp musical concepts and techniques. He is easy to reach for scheduling, he communicates promptly and is always accommodating. My son enjoys his Clarinet lessons very much. We highly recommend Josh.
As someone in their 50s who has loved music for a long time, but never played an instrument, I was nervous about starting saxophone lessons. Larry has been the perfect teacher for me. He expects a lot, but he's patient. He takes the time to make sure I understand the mechanics of getting a good sound and is willing to entertain my many questions about anything--from embouchure to harmony. I can't say enough great things about Larry. He has made learning the saxophone a very satisfying experience.
