My 5-year old rescue was displaying what I considered "fear-based" aggression to people, and when he bit a family member I knew I needed professional help. Janice came to my house with an assistant and spent hours with me and my dog - training me! He had been fighting me for dominance, and while he is not giving it up without some resistance, I have been working with my dog consistently, and am seeing great improvement. About a week into our work together he stopped urinating in the house without any direct intervention, but definitely as a direct result of the changes I have made in response to Janice's training. Mikie is feeling more secure now that we have clarified his position in the household. While more expensive than some other trainers, I really appreciate that this is a life-long professional relationship and that Janice is available for future training sessions and phone/email contact as needed for no additional fee.

It was wonderful for my husband and I and for our dog as well. He is 17-1/2 years old, blind and doesn't hear anymore. The groomer was wonderful and handled our dog fanstastically. We will continue to use Grace Grooming and the cost was very reasonable!!! Very Happy Customer!

Sal is a warm hearted, gentle soul with a soothing voice & calming demeanor. He has a high level of expertise in training dogs. My wife & I are incredibly happy with his handling & training of our miniature poodle "Lucky". Sal was able to control our very rambunctious dog & calmed him very easily. Sal has a very natural ability to handle dogs. We are more than pleased with both him & his ability to train "Lucky". We highly recommend Sal & can truly say that you get way more than your money's worth with hiring him. He is a true professional & it's quite obvious that he enjoys his craft. You will be very happy with his level of expertise, training methods & overall effectiveness. Thank you Sal for being our "dog whisperer".

Wonderful experience with Suzanne who has worked beautifully with our 10 month old dog and was able to give us lots of practical advice to train the dog. Suzannne was also very good with the children, helping them understand their role in the dog's training.

Words can't describe how much Ariana means to us. After rescuing a 72lb AmStaff with behavioral issues, we asked Ariana to help guide us through training our sweet, strong boy. Ariana's tireless patience, humor and knowledge made training our dog a fun, bonding experience instead of a stressful one. Her commitment to ensuring our collective success and a healthy, happy dog was evident in every hour she spent with us. Work with Ariana- she is a joy who also knows her dog training stuff!

Joan is a kind and loving person, and brings these qualities to her superb dog training. She helped Sidney Cha-Cha, our miniature poodle pup, with anxiety and incessant barking. We are grateful for her assistance, and our dogs will miss her presence in our home. Highly recommended!

Dr. J has a very different approach to dog training. It works because the dog understands completely what is expected. We accomplished in two sessions what I could not with any of my dogs over the years. The crazy barking is a thing of the past and only appropriate bark is heard. I can walk my 7 month old Maltese and 11 year old Yorkie without a leash. Anyone who has a pet should consider having Dr. J visit. You will not only have well behaved pets, but in my opinion, a better relationship.

Anna is such a great trainer, mentor & friend. She is patient and always excited to share her endless knowledge in dog training. Not only did our husky, Kodiak, learn a great deal, but she focused a lot of her training on us. Though our training sessions are over, Anna is always so kind and available when we need to tweak some of Kodiak's mishaps. I would highly recommend BesoMomma anytime!!

We have not completed our puppy training yet but so far all is going well. Josh connected with my puppy right away as if she knew him already and responded to his reward-based training technique right away. He also gave us a lot of information on how to care for our puppy.

Truly fantastic and unique dog training experience. Chelsea had so much patience and genuine interest as I spoke with her (endlessly, on multiple occasions) about all of my concerns about my 11-year old adopted Shiba mix who grew up as a street dog in China. Gingko has not been an easy dog for me to deal with, but Chelsea has helped me not only manage but understand her barking and snapping behaviors. She's not just interested in obedience - she wants to help create a symbiotic relationship between you and your dog, so that each of you are happy and safe. I always imagined training to be just lots of clicker-treat-clicker-treat stuff (doesn't work with Gingko, who thinks treats are a trap). But Chelsea's full of clever, practical, and easy solutions that prevent unwanted behaviors from happening in the first place. Can't recommend her highly enough.

Rachel has helped immensely improve the relationship I have with my dog. Thanks to Rachel, I can read the body language cues my dog is giving me. She taught me that my dog, Sasha, is uncomfortable when strollers, lawn movers or certain dogs pass, which is why she'll pull the other way or try to eat grass. Rachel is always reliable, professional, friendly, patient and understanding. Above all, she loves my dog, and my dog LOVES Rachel.

Tim is a friendly and devoted individual. Extremely knowledgeable about his trade. He comprehends the needs you have of your dog, and employs his training regimen around those needs. Further, he teaches you the required skills to keep the dog well trained and behaving properly. We saw progress with our pup well within a few weeks. The important thing is that you listen to what Tim has to say, and you employ the tactics he teaches you. It's all about reinforcement. Without that reinforcement, your dog will only go so far. If someone asked me to recommend a dog trainer, The Guiding Leash Dog Training and Behavior Solutions company would be my go to choice.

Emily is one the best trainers in town!! Don't hesitate for a second and try her classes out. I started training my dog Tank when he was 9 months old. He had no impulse control and would jump and try to bite my face. I thought he was untrainable. After only 2 months Tank was able to pass his CGC which is a test used to test a dog's good behavior. Emily uses positive training and knows different training methods to get the best results. She really is the best trainer in town.

Andrea and her husband John go above and beyond to take care of our dog, a shy rescue who needed help to open up. Great value for our money. Our pup is tired out from having so much fun with her doggy friends during her walks and greets us calmly when we get home. She's also now better about welcoming strangers to pet her. Highly recommend!

Ben is an outstanding caregiver to our Frenchie pup Nilla. I lovingly refer to him as "Uncle Ben" because Nilla adores him so much. He is very responsible, dependable, and ready at a moment's notice when we need something, often for same-day walks. His dog-care skills are superb and you can be sure your puppy will be in excellent hands when she is with Ben. Thanks for all your dedication to Nilla and all the other upper west side doggies, Ben! Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
