I hired Jay because I had two puppies and didn't know how I was going to train them together. Jay gave me lots of helpful tips & helped me to train them. They now know commands such as sit, down, stay & come. Jay answered all of my questions & concerns. My puppies were very excited everytime Jay came to the door & couldn't wait for him to give them treats for a job well done. He made training the puppies fun for my kids too & got them involved. I can truly tell Jay loves what he does.

Words can't describe how much Ariana means to us. After rescuing a 72lb AmStaff with behavioral issues, we asked Ariana to help guide us through training our sweet, strong boy. Ariana's tireless patience, humor and knowledge made training our dog a fun, bonding experience instead of a stressful one. Her commitment to ensuring our collective success and a healthy, happy dog was evident in every hour she spent with us. Work with Ariana- she is a joy who also knows her dog training stuff!

Mary Jean has totally transformed our dog. We started training during his puppy stage and continued into part of his adolescence, so Mary Jean was able to curb some behaviors very early on. Her positive attitude, accessibility, and willingness to help have made her a joy to work with. Plus, our dog absolutely adores her. Mary Jean trains both the dog and the owner. Her advice about how to reinforce skills on our own was clear and easy to keep up with. Our time with Mary Jean is over for now, but she instilled key skills that will stay with us and with our dog for a very long time. We highly recommend The Canine Cure!

Joan is a kind and loving person, and brings these qualities to her superb dog training. She helped Sidney Cha-Cha, our miniature poodle pup, with anxiety and incessant barking. We are grateful for her assistance, and our dogs will miss her presence in our home. Highly recommended!

We got our first puppy a few weeks ago and decided to seek out professional training for our pooch so that he behaves well because he will be a big one (100lbs). Ken has been great with Rocco and it is amazing to see how the puppy responds to tricks and commands when Ken is working with him. Ken knows how to "read" or interpret your dog's personality and addresses any issues you want to correct or avoid. Training is not just for the pup but for us, too. We are very satisfied with the 2 sessions we've had so far.

I began working with Rick about a month ago to assist with my 18-month old pitbull, Petunia. Petunia had become aggressive to strangers (e.g., lunging, barking aggressively) when out in public and in the home and I was very much beside myself with how to address the behaviors. We had attempted obedience training at the pet store which did not correct the problem and she continued to worsen. People were afraid of my little pitty and I was developing a sense of hopelessness and resignation where I no longer even wanted to take her for walks and just figured we would have to live a limited lifestyle with her. As a last ditch effort to address Petunia's aggression, I had a consultation with Rick. He took an hour to meet with us to evaluate her. Petunia aggressively barked and lunged the whole time at Rick, but he thought she could be helped and we signed on for the ride. What a journey it has been. In less than a month, I have a restored sense of hope that Petunia can reach her full potential as a wonderful pet. With several training sessions and several trips to stay with Rick, Petunia is now heeling, is much more under control, is not barking aggressively or lunging on walks, and appears more calm and mellow overall. Rick has also taken much time to continuously meet and/or consult with me and my boyfriend on how to maintain the progress by teaching us how to handle Petunia on our own. We are still in the midst of Petunia's training, but I can see a complete 180 in her and am forever grateful that we made the decision to work with Rick. I highly recommend him without hesitation.

We hired Alice the dog trainer when we introduced a new Doberman into our pack. My Rottie was not so happy about him and she helped us deal with the new puppy training as well as the older dog's unwillingness to cooperate. She was fantastic and I would recommend her to any family dealing with training issues. Lynne

Bruce has been very patient and informative. He has helped me decide whether a service dog was right for me by providing the crucial information that I couldn't find online. The guidance has been extremely reassuring. I look forward to the process of finding and training a dog with Bruce.

Although my puppy and I had initial training at a storefront situation, I didn't feel that I had a good knowledge of how to help my cockapoo puppy to be a well-behaved and happy dog. Margaret has given us very specific tasks to obtain the right behavior. She is helping me to think like a dog so I can see how my behaviors are interpreted by my puppy. Each hour is full of hands on instruction with plenty of fun for my puppy and me. She is very encouraging and is a delightful person. We have worked on sit, stay, down, wait, hush (for barking) and most importantly to come when called in a situation where my puppy would rather chase that bunny or squirrel. I highly recommend her as a talented and professional dog trainer.

We have not completed our puppy training yet but so far all is going well. Josh connected with my puppy right away as if she knew him already and responded to his reward-based training technique right away. He also gave us a lot of information on how to care for our puppy.

Kristen is amazing. We were looking for a trainer who could help us with both training and therapy with a 3 year old samoyed who had suffered a carpal (wrist) injury. Kristen's experience as a breeder and trainer of working dogs combined with her experience as a vet tech made her the perfect choice and we're lucky we found her. Kristen primarily works with Australian Shepherds, breeding training and showing, but she is great with all breeds. Do you know she has shown dogs at Westminster? Our Samoyed Lulu had an accident a year ago and her carpal joint had become inflamed. Lulu's stomach doesn't tolerate NSAIDS, and Lulu was in pain and picking up some bad habits. Kristen took over and got everything on the right track right away. First, Kristen helped us find a course of treatment that helped relieve Lulu's worst symptoms without harming her stomach, stabilizing her for the next step. Then Kristen designed a course of training to simultaneously strengthen Lulu's muscles and joints. (Not just her wrist) to better support her weight, while also training Lulu for obedience. Kristen even managed conversations with a local vet to get the right combination of meds for Lulu including gabapenton. Kristen went far beyond what we expected. I can't think of a better resource for training, working with physical challenges , coordinating treatment and doing it all seamlessly. For any job, from basic puppy training to working dog training to complex cases like ours, you won't find anyone even close to Kristen. Thanks Kristen!

We are so happy to have met Debbie! She is an absolute pleasure. She helped me and my fiancee learn how to be the best owners to our new puppy Bodie. She truly cares for each animal she works with and wants the best for both owner and dog. Being a pretty anxious person, Debbie was so patient and helpful. She never left without us fully understanding what is expected and always made sure we could do it on our own. She is a fabulous trainer and person. She even gave us great tips for healthy homemade treats for our dog. I would recommend her 1000 times over to anyone who is looking for help with their dog, new or old.

I cannot recommend Adam from Casper Dog Training enough! He took his time to tailor his training to our needs with our dog, making sure we understood what he was doing the entire time. His patience, understanding, and professionalism made him amazing to work with without feeling overwhelmed or pressured. We will definitely continue dog training with Adam, he was a very calming presence and made sure to answer all of our questions and concerns before he finished. He was very thorough and left us with great tips to make sure we knew exactly how to continue to work with our dog.

She answered a little later than I expected but she made up for it with her service. I was in a terrible mood because I had been fighting with my husband about finding a dog walker because Poppy tends to pee all over the house, and when I met Ruby she was very friendly and warm. My bad mood went away and she treated my dog so nice. I would definitely book with her again!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
