Our scheduled tech wasnt able to make it so rather than cancelling they sent us another guy who came in from manhattan....all the way to queens! Even with a long trip like that he was only 30 minutes late which was amazing! Not only did he install the 2 a/c units we hired him to do he also helped my husband drill holes in the wall and hang a curtain rod over our balcony door. We will definitely use these guys again.

Martin did tiling, painting, a hot water heater, renovated my bathrooms and installed a garage door opener with battery backup. Renovating was new to me but Martin made it so much easier with his skill and workmanship. The condo I purchased is now a home and I get so many compliments from my friends who live in the development. They have even used him.

Alex and Elizabeth, his wife, fairly priced out the job when viewed and per my description, and was hired to paint our Livingroom, Up and Downstairs Hallways with numerous doors, laundry area and closets – soup to nuts. That included repairing smoothing out any damaged walls, seal and re-tack trim work, strip, and stain and seal 2 staircase rails etc. Alex and his crew, politely and respectfully came to work, on time, every day, ready to work. Work is neat, clean and professionally completed, within the time estimated. We have additional projects for which we plan to use Alex and Elizabeth.

Pep Menendez who is the owner of Ultimate Overhead Doors is a Great guy. He knows the working of the garage door system like the back of his hand. He is very knowledgeable and knows exactly what the problem with the garage door is and how it can be fixed. I felt very comfortable talking to him and explaining my concerns. He diagnosed the problem quickly and fixed it in a very short time. He has expertise in the Lift Master garage door opener system. I will definitely recommend him to all my friends for servicing their garage doors.

Juan did a fabulous job, exactly as he said he would do it, closing a wall and adding a door for bedroom privacy, while also adding and moving light fixtures. And, he completed the job in 2 days, as he said he would try to do. Not only that, he set up cloths to keep the mess contained and, at the end, he cleaned and swept up, leaving the area “ready to move in.” He was available on the phone, very fair in his price, and an honest person. I will definitely call him for future work without hesitation.

On November 17, 2015 NY Quality Painting and Contracting repainted several rooms in my home, as well as sanded my door frames and poly-urethaned doors and frames, and fixed a door that had a few problems. Konstantinos and Philip were at my home everyday at the stated time and completed the needed work timely, efficiently and with the least amount of dust as possible. Both men were very respectful of my home and very trustworthy. Konstantinos was always available to speak with regarding the work that was being done and/or future work. The project was completed within the expected timeframe which was very important to us as I am a working mom of two children with limited availability. NY Quality Painting was accommodating and impressed me with ability to meet our family's demands and needs. I will definitely be hiring this company again for future jobs and will leave an updated review at that time.

Miguel Martinez was really a pleasure to work with. I would definitely have him back to do other jobs around my home. He was knowledgable and competent about actually installing the doors, took care to clean up afterward and made sure that they were functioning well- we have an old house so no jobs are easy here! We contacted Global Housing with a painting project of our 2 floor home. In addition to the walls and ceilings, the painting project included various types of stubborn wood trim\moldings and doors that were previously stained. Additionally, making the project a bit more challenging was that we were already moved into the home with our furnishings and had new wood flooring previously installed. James was very responsive from the initial contact and throughout the project. Anytime there was a concern raised by us he quickly responded and handled the concern with ease. The painters themselves were extremely polite and professional. They were careful with covering the flooring and furnishings and really went above and beyond with the quality of the work and even in recommendations. Upon the completion of the project, James reassured us and encouraged us to not hesitate to contact him should we see something that we were not happy with or if something was inadvertently overlooked. We would wholeheartedly recommend Global Housing Contractors and would work with them again without hesitation. Mr. & Mrs. Rios Roselle, NJ

I have nothing but 5 Stars for Padro's painting service. Pedro and his team were very polite, respectful, professional, punctual and they did an outstanding job and delivered in the time agreed that we agreed upon. Pedro made my very imperfect walls looks brand new. In addition, Pedro was also a big help with helping us choose the right colors for our house. He did a full house painting and we could not be happier with his service. Our walls, baseboards and doors have been beautifully painted and it is very refreshing to look at. Thank you Pedro and your team for your fine workmanship, it was a pleasure working with you! I highly recommend Pedro Mora's painting service.

Denis goes the extra mile. He had to work for like 7 hours, into the early evening, to install our garage door. The previous owners had put in a non-standard size garage door, requiring a lot of custom work, which he didn't even charge me for. He came back the next day to finish up. Highly recommended. Denis is now my go-to guy when anyone asks who should they engage to install or repair garage doors. He also does commercial work, not just small residential projects. Punctual, fair price, great quality, great customer service.

I needed to have my garage finished. We bought the house three years ago and i was finally able to hire someone to do it. I have to say i couldn't be happier. They sheet rock the walls and painted them, and finished the ceiling. They helped me put shelves together and now its beautiful, clean and organized. I absolutely love the way it turned out. I also had them paint the bedrooms and they did a perfect job. They are professional, quick and have great people's skills. Worth every single penny spent. I will definitely use them again

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

  • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
  • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
  • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
  • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
    • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.
