I had a leakage issue which was coming from the 3rd floor bathroom through my kitchen ceiling. Jason quickly found the location and issue. The price he quoted to fix the two leaks was very affordable. He was kind enough to quickly drive to buy the parts needed and get right to work. Not only did he fix that, he also figured out our refrigerator issue which was shut off due to a breaker switch being off. Jason is very respectful, professional, honest, knowledgeable, and AFFORDABLE. You can't beat that. I would hire Jason again for any other issues!

He showed up as scheduled, did a nice job caulking the tub. Left a minor mess, but it's a small NYC bathroom and I cleaned it up in a couple of minutes. I'd hire them again.

Mike did several things in my house. He replaced a bathroom sink at a much lower cost than the plumber was going to charge, did retiling in two bathrooms in a shower and around a tub. The tiling tuned out great and enabled me to avoid the big cost of redoing my bathroom shower wall and surface area around my tub. He installed a floor in my laundry room which turned out great and installed an outside light. Mike is honest and his quality of work is excellent. His prices are fair as well. He obviously has many years of experience and is capable of all things you would need a handyman for. I am glad to have found a handyman like Mike and would recommend him to everyone. He also has a lot of creative ideas so if you are thinking of changing/ fixing something but are not exactly sure what you want Mike can give you many suggestions to get you to your goal. His many years of experience are very valuable. I will soon do a resurfacing of kitchen countertops with Mike and I know already with perfect confidence that the countertops will turn out great. Greivin was on time and very professional. He Demo'd out my bathroom tile floor and subfloor to access a broken drain pipe. He taped and protected the surrounding so dust wasn't every where. I would use his services again.

Konstantinos and his assistant sanded and painted our kitchen and bathroom cabinets. They also installed two backsplash glass panels and painted the cabinet beneath our kitchen sink. They were very flexible about scheduling the job and accommodated several requests we made to postpone. They completed the job on schedule and on budget, were very neat, professional, and courteous. We trusted them in our home. They responded to messages promptly and helped us to figure out how to accomplish what we wanted done. We would definitely recommend them and would use them again.

Very responsive from the beginning. James told us what could and couldn't be done in regards to our bathroom remodel in an old Victorian house. Other people who came in for estimates didn't have nearly as much knowledge and didn't offer up alternate ideas/suggestions for layout. James took alot of measurements and proposed a very workable solution we hadn't thought of and sent us 3D sketches of how it would look. He answered all our questions and was forthright about the pitfalls. We were so impressed with him, I recommended him next day to a neighbor looking to rennovate. Will certainly hire James when we decide to proceed but I wanted to post this now and add to all his other 5 star ratings. I see now why he is rated so high!

After putting in a request for a repair on my kitchen stove, I was promptly contacted by Paul Ryder and was able to arrange with him to come out the same day. He arrived on time and was quickly able to detect the problem and fix it. I highly recommend you contact him to discuss whatever home improvement or repair issue you have. After talking with him it became obvious he has extensive experience in tackling large complicated remodeling jobs as well as small repairs and decorating projects.

I initially spoke with TNS about a bathroom remodel but we also needed a ceiling replaced (due to a now repaired roof leak) and an overly large closet knocked out in our kids room. The kids room took precedence obviously and they were able to come out and get started right away. The guys worked quickly and got the closet knocked out, the ceiling taken down, and the new ceiling up all in the same day! They came back to put a second coat of spackle and then a third day to sand and prime. The room was left clean and ready for me to paint and it looks awesome! I will definitely hire them again for future projects.

We bought a house in haste and had extremely tight timeline to get several jobs done before moving in. Sam saved the day! I am amazed by the quality and professionalism he and his team delivered. They did paint job, flooring, tiling, bathroom remodeling, light fitting and even fixed a leaky plumbing. It was simply a delight to get all the job finished beautifully in record time of ~2 weeks. I don’t have a single complain. He provided very helpful insights, helped us with options and was mindful of our budget and constraints. A true partner all along. Before this experience, I have always been very skeptical of home remodeling, but now with Sam I would rather do a fixer upper. Thank you, Sam for all your hard work!

I have had David Marx do many jobs over the last few weeks to transform our second home which had become somewhat dilapidated. He has changed light fixtures, fixed closet doors, hung a new TV on the wall, added grab bars in the bathroom, repaired a ceiling and wall damaged from a leak, installed a new ceiling fan and new blinds. I am very pleased with the work he has done. He is very professional and knowledgeable and a very hard worker. He is neat and takes care to thoroughly clean up at the end of the day. My only criticism is that he often runs late. Yet once he is on the job he never takes a break. I have a degree in Interior Design and as such I appreciated his creative approach to finding solutions to problems. Thanks to Dave my husband's "man-cave" has been transformed. I highly recommend him.

Ndue from Kolecki Construction met me at an apartment that I wanted to buy to look at the electric, which needed to be upgraded. I didn’t end up buying the apartment or hire Ndue, but I was impressed by his responsiveness and knowledge. He met me at the building and was right on time. Buying real estate in New York is an imposing process, especially when you need to hire a contractor and don’t know where to begin. Ndue invited me to buildings where his team was working and where walls were open so that I see what they do. I still don’t have an apartment, but I’ll call him if that day comes.

The best service that my wife and I have ever experienced. From start to finish was great. Lori keep us informed of the project every step of the way. The installation crew were very polite and respectful. They worked as a team together and keep us fully informed during the entire installation process. They asked us where we wanted everything installed. It was a surprise for us to meet the owner, Brian Nevins. He definitely added the personal touch to the experience. I highly recommend anyone thinking about a bathroom remodel to contact RetroBath.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

Who remodels bathrooms?

The professional best equipped to handle bathroom remodeling is a general contractor. A general contractor is typically licensed by the state or region in which they work to carry out home remodeling projects. To receive licensing, they must generally demonstrate their knowledge of construction and building and safety codes. General contractors act as the organizer for the entire bathroom remodeling project, ensuring that each element (new tile, shower pan replacement, lighting installation, etc.) is completed at the appropriate time by the proper contractor. Before hiring a general contractor, it’s wise to do your research. In addition to getting several competitive bids, here are questions to ask:

  • May I see before-and-after photos of some of your recent bathroom remodels?
  • Will I need permits for this project? Do you apply for those?
  • May I see proof of insurance and licenses?
  • Can we have a written contract outlining scope of work, budget and timeline?
  • Will you be here each day overseeing the work?
