My 1 year old Jack Russell Billy was showing signs of aggression and out of control behavior. I needed someone to teach me how to teach Billy good doggie manners. Jay had Billy under control within the first 1/2 hour of his first visit to my home. Jay taught me how to understand Billy's body language, correct his negative behavior and in a kind and gentle way to teach Billy that I was in control, I was the alpha leader not Billy. I learned so much about a dogs behavior from Jay. It is really the owners that need the training on how to correctly teach our dogs how we would like them to behave. I now have a dog that has good manners. Billy has learned not to jump on people, sit , lay down and stay on command, wait until I tell him to retrieve food, toys etc. all this with only simple one word commands. Billy now walks perfectly when going for a walk, he is by my side and I set the pace. I never dreamed that Billy could be such a well behaved dog..I am so proud of him..Jay is an excellent teacher, he is kind, patient and he just loves dogs. If you need help with your dog...don't hesitate..call Jay...you will not be disappointed.

Sal seems to really like what he does and he does it well. He and Jaxson, my 11 mo. old Cavachon, got along marvelously. Sal taught Jaxson, as well as myself how to do a few commads, ie. sit, come, down, stay etc. With practice, I'm sure Jaxson will pick up the commands. If I have any problems with Jaxson, Sal will be back to help.

We have had two training sessions with Ariana and our two four-month old Chow-Shepherd mixes, and we couldn't be happier with what she has taught the pups and us so far. The dogs adore her and respond well to her training techniques, and she clearly has a lot of in-depth knowledge and experience working with dogs and animals in general. I appreciate that she has a background in animal behavior, so she understands why they act the way they do and uses that to redirect their behavior. We look forward to many more sessions with her!

Our trainer , Caitlin was so impressive with her knowledge on dog psychology, she made us feel so comfortable, always being encouraging , positive and patient. We never felt judged in the least , she was so cool and down to earth, exactly what we needed , I would highly recommend them to anyone hesitating getting a trainer for fear of feeling judged, I'm so happy we made the commitment, it made a world of difference with basic obedience in our puppy and 6 yr old beagle loved it as well!

So glad we hired Anna. She helped us to understand that our dog was anxious, and not aggressive, and gave us invaluable advice on how to work with him and work to break unwanted behaviors. The time she spent with us was informative and enlightening. While we have always tried to be responsible and attentive pet parents, Anna helped us identify areas where we were subconsciously giving our dog the wrong cues, as well as being inconsistent in our day to day expectations of him. Her follow up after the appointment has been thorough and much appreciated. She emailed us the same evening with a run down of all the points we discussed, followed up multiple times in the days following to see how things were going, and offered encouragement and advice. All around a wonderful experience and though it is still early after our appointment, we can already see improvements in our dog's behavior. I look forward to watching not only our pup, but us as parents, grow and learn.

Suki is great! She is very flexible and absolutely loved animals! She is gentle and watchful. She walked the dogs in the park and several times during the day, fed them and spent good quality time with them. They clearly loved her too.

Jenn was wonderful! She's extremely knowledgeable in animal behavior & provides much love & care for your pets. Our dog & 2 cats were calm & relaxed when we got back from our 3 days away. You can tell they really enjoyed themselves & were not stressed, thanks to Jenn. We got pictures & updates daily of the gang, which we really appreciated. Plus, our place looked just the way we left it when we got back! We would love to use Jenn's professional services in the future. We were extremely happy with Jenn's care! Thank you, Jenn!

we recently got a new 3.5 month old frenchie who is just so adorable but had some habits set in, from her litter buddies. we contacted karin for help on where to begin and how to train our frenchie into the city lifestyle. our first meeting with karin, opened up our eyes on some bad habits that we didn’t know we were promoting with our puppy. karin was thorough in explaining puppy behavior and how our frenchie understands our body language. yesterday was our third meeting with karin and beau (our frenchie) is very much familiar with the emergency recall, sit, sit with stay, come, down, crate, walking on a loose leash, behaving appropriately with other dogs (our older frenchie) and potty training. also, karin has been available through text at all times during the day and night. she likes to know when beau has done something good or bad at the time it happens, so that any bad learning can be addressed immediately. we are so thankful for meeting karin and can’t wait for our next sessions.

Sean was fantastic to work with. He has a real understanding of dogs and their behavior. He worked with my dog for as long as she needed to be trained and corrected, and continued to follow up with both my progress as well as my dog's. I could not recommend him highly enough.

We have used Margaret to help acclimate our new rescue pup into our home with our six year old Shih Tzu who is the Queen. From the first visit she offered practical tips on managing the pups behavior. There are four adults living in our house and she was keenly aware of how that might impact the consistency of what we did with our new puppy. Each week she would visit with all four of us and made us feel more comfortable with what we were doing and we could see the progress. It was more like Margaret was at the house visiting and in more of a conversation provided us excellent guidance and feedback and answered all our questions. It never felt that we were at a lesson. She has regular as well as four-legged people skills. We would enthusiastically recommend her!

Kristin is a dedicated professional. She spent over two hours with us in our home on our first visit with her. She spent time videotaping our dog's behavior and demonstrated several behavior modification techniques for us to practice until our next session. She has kept in constant contact with us post-visit and has been there to answer questions and provide feedback. Our dog has separation anxiety which is going to require a long term plan and I believe that Kristin is definitely going to be a part of the team along with our behavior veterinarian. I would recommend Kristin.

Gus is very professional and knowledgeable about dog psychology and is great in explaining dog behavior. We consulted with him to try to figure out the causes of our dog's aggressive behavior towards other dogs and the best ways of dealing with it. Gus was able to pinpoint the issue right away and gave us some hands on tips that we are going to use going forward. I would highly recommend him as a trainer.

What do you do when you love your dog, but don't love living with him/her? Well, you can do what I did and call, Tom, The Dog Tamer. My dog was impulsive, non-compliant, and non-responsive to the boundaries of authority. Hiring Tom embarked positive change in my dog and my life. Tom is able to come in and apply his comprehensive understanding of behavior modification to train canine behavior and response. But, what truly makes Tom stand out is his enpowering natural and innate connection with dogs. His gift with dogs is special. Trusting your dog with Tom will no doubt bring the individualized results you are seeking to bring balance to your home and dog.

My dog training session with Faryn was impressive and her professional way of teaching is definitely 100% outstanding. Faryn provided helpful tips to improve my dog’s response when giving certain commands. When I first adopted my dog, one of the many challenging obstacles I came across was the constant pulling on the leash my dog will do. Before meeting with Faryn I was contemplating on how to improve my walks with my dog, WOW was that difficult and annoying. However, after the first training session with Faryn, my dog no longer pulls on the leash as much as before. In fact, these last couple of days I enjoy my long walks at the park with my dog. Thank You Faryn,

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?
