Needed to move a large desk from a location in an outer borough to Manhattan. The movers were early, pleasant and professional. While their price was higher than other movers, I went with my guts ~ glad I did. I would use them again.

Very careful movers paid close attention to detail while moving some very difficult pieces of furniture. Pleasant, professional, and hard-working. Easy to schedule, arrived on-time as estimated, and made sure to keep the house clean. Costs exactly as stated and estimated. Will definitely hire again!

I had a great experience with D+M! I had booked with another moving company a month before my move, but learned a week before that my new building would not accept my movers' insurance, so I called D+M and thankfully they were able to fit me in! Stacy, the D+M sales representative I worked with, was responsive and helpful and made my move as stress-free as possible. My movers arrived early and were very understanding that I had not completely finished packing, and I was able to wrap up the last few items while they worked. The foreman, Anthony, was very pleasant, kind, helpful, and great to work with, and his team was courteous and friendly. They asked questions to make sure they understood which items I wanted moved and which I wanted them to take out to the curb, and they worked quickly and efficiently. Unfortunately, traffic was terrible and they were stuck for hours on the way to my new apartment, but I was not charged extra for the additional travel time, which I know some movers do and am very grateful that D+M does not! Thank you Anthony, Mike, and D+M! I will definitely be using you for my next move!

I reached out to Vlad in a bit of a predicament. Due to a perfect storm of a vacationing loan officer, a confused appraiser, an eager builder, and a noncommunicative landlord, I knew that I had to move within a 12-hour period in the next week. I just didn't know which day. I called around to about 5 movers, and emailed 10 more, only Vlad was willing to be "on call". After inputting all my information, Vlad sent me a non-binding estimate (More on that later). Later that week I emailed him with an exact date, less than 48 hours in advance, he quickly agreed. On the day of the move, I told Vlad that I wanted to move as early as possible, he gave me an hour window, 8am-9am. He showed up 7:30am ready to move. My wife wasn't fully ready, so they started in the other rooms until she left for work. Packing went well. I had done nearly no packing. My wife had an overnight bag, and I had walked around for about an hour throwing things out. Other than that we were totally unprepared (laundry was still on the floor and my mail was on the counter). The men weren't phased and packed through the morning, ending at around noon. There was a slight delay caused by a double-booked freight elevator, but they were as efficient as possible. I did ask that they eat lunch while we waited to save time, and they declined. But I can't complain because they ate while they drove and didn't waste any time (they arrived at the new house withing 10 minutes of me getting the keys). Plus, I wouldn't have wanted to have my lunch at a jobsite while the customer was watching, so why would they? As for the actual packing, they did a great job of using a sane amount of materials, and saved money by using my own luggage and boxes where appropriate. Other movers (especially when you buy boxes from them), use thirty sheets of paper, bubble wrap, and a two boxes to wrap up a cup of pens. Vlad and his men were more selective, saving me money (as well as aggravation during the unpack). Unloading was also a breeze. There was one box explosion, one broken glass, one misplaced box, and few possible dings, but nothing noteworthy, costly, or too aggravating. The total bill came within $100 of the estimate, which was extremely reasonable considering the delay with the elevator, and the cursory description of the apartment. I would definitely recommend them to a friend, especially one that was using them to pack. Vlad and his men are extremely helpful, reasonably priced, highly efficient, and the quality of their work is above-average.

I used Bluebell to move from NJ to TX. Tony was the person who helped through it all. From figuring out what materials I needed to always keeping in touch until my thing arrived and their destination, he was great. The movers were very time efficient and my things arrived within the estimated time of arrival with no damage to any of my property. I would definitely recommend Bluebell to others.

Brig and his team were fantastic— friendly, prompt, rolled with the punches when there were changes to both the schedule and available parking. They came prepared with tons of blankets, wrap, tape and boxes which were much appreciated for my last minute items and other things I had overlooked/was underprepared for and they did an amazing job preparing my more fragile items for transport. Every. Single. Item. arrived in the exact same condition it started in, no scratches, no breaks, no wobbly loading or close calls. The guys have a great rapport with each other which translates into total efficiency in their process. Both of my dogs loved the whole crew, all three gents are fun to chat with during those inevitable stretches of waiting that happen during all moves and the pricing can’t be beat. While I plan to stay in my new digs for quite awhile, I will be spreading the word and recommending 3 Brothers Family Moving to anyone I encounter looking for recommendations for professional, affordable and kind movers here in the city.

These guys were great! They brought 3 movers (one who organized the van at times), were on time, worked hard, and thoroughly wrapped all delicate pieces of furniture (glass tables, TVs, etc.) Moving out of two walk-up apartments into another walk-up apartment only took them 4 hours. I would hire them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
