Calvert came to my house in the pouring rain to find a leak in my kitchen that some people couldn't even find, and no one had been able to fix. As soon as the sun came out, he was back working on the leak and it was fixed and finished in two day's time. He is honest, fair, and good at what he does!

Art did some exterior painting and replaced weather stripping around my garage door and side door. He replaced my kitchen faucet. He did what he said he was going to do, for the price we agreed upon, and I was happy with the work. He was polite and respectful. The only criticism I have is that he rescheduled several times (without a lot of notice), but at least one of those times was my fault -- he couldn't find the right part and I ended up ordering it online, which saved me money.

Jays's Painting definitely deserves a 5 star rating! They were courteous, punctual, hardworking and conscientious. They did a marvelous job on my home! They painted the cabinets in my kitchen and it doesn't look like the same kitchen at all. I would recommend Jay's Painting to anyone and have already passed their business card to friends and family.

1st job was to paint great room and kitchen nook and hallways. Albert was always on time or even early, worked quickly and cleaned up daily. After finishing the first part of the project we discovered the paint store made the wrong color paint! Albert rearranged his schedule and repainted everything in record time. The next week we called him to do a small job to open a wall to inspect a water leak. Once again he was available to do the job and then returned to close up the wall. Albert is very professional, friendly and trustworthy. Although we're hoping we don't need to, we wouldn't hesitate to call him again.

Jaime did a kitchen remodel for us. He assisted in design and everything he suggested made our new kitchen the kitchen of our dreams. Jaime and his employees were very professional and we felt very comfortable with them in our house. We will definitely be calling Jaime for our bathroom remodels, because he did such a fantastic job. One of the nicest things is that he had the job done when he promised and done very well.

I hired Hemakana Builders for a kitchen tile job. The owner, Michael Nonies, did such an amazing job on the tile that I asked him if he could also do electrical work. He is very good with the electrical work also. He installed a light fixture above our bar and made such a clean job of it, that it looks original to the ceiling. He is very tidy with his work, no matter what he's doing, he keeps the area clean. Michael is very talented and can do beautiful work of almost any kind. I will call on him again whenever I need anything done. There were also times when I had to leave him alone in the home, and I had complete confidence in his trustworthiness. Thank you Thumbtack for bringing such competent tradesmen to my door.

Michael did my kitchen back splash with some fairly intricate tiles, single tiles, not sheets, and it turned out beautiful!! He kindly responded to requests. He also repaired some tiles around my flagstone patio face. Everything turned out great and in a pinch! He is courteous and efficient. I want to hire him to do my bathrooms next.

Erik did my backsplash in my kitchen. The job was complicated and Erik did a great job addressing my concerns as the job progressed. I stopped him many, many times throughout the job to ask him questions and he never lost his patience or made me feel as though my concerns were insignificant. His customer service is top notch.

Absolutely outstanding! He did an amazing job on my bathroom remodel and was so professional and easy to communicate with. He did all the work with his cousin so it was nice not having a bunch of strangers coming in and out of my home. Also since he was always there he knew everything that was going on. I am blown away by the quality and his knowledge. Next up is the kitchen remodel and I will be using him again. His price was also extremely fair, especially for the quality of his work.

When Fransisco refinished my kitchen cabinets, he was expedient, hard working and dedicated to making sure everything was how I wanted it. He is also very flexible and was able to work around my schedule. He was professional throughout the job, which is much more than I can say for many service workers I have dealt with. I would definitely recommend him to my family/friends.

I had them do a variety of tasks (installed flooring in bathroom, painting, constructing a kitchen drawer, paint out-door wrought iron, replace wood exterior door, hauling, replace a sink, repair faucets) and they did a great job. They showed up on time every morning on time, and were easy to work with. I had one complaint about how the bathroom floor went down and they were very receptive to the feedback and changed it right away. I would definitely hire them again for similar work.

I had a lot of questions about kitchen remodeling. He was so knowledgeable and patient to answer all of my questions. Anything he didn't have an immediate answer for he made sure to get one. The finished product was immaculate. I'm so happy with it! I would definitely recommend Champion Custom Builders to my friends!

ProStar Construction has taken our home from shab to fab. They have updated the entire house. This included a full kitchen redo, two bathrooms, tiled laundry room, built a deck, rebuilt a badly neglected patio cover, built 3 gates and fenced a side yard, exterior & interior painting, etc. Prostar - Jeff & Jason are professional full service contractors. Each project has been done with excellence. We look forward to working with them on each project. The neighbors are impressed and have projects they are interested in having done by Prostar as well. Always a job well done!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

      What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

      • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
      • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
      • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
      • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
