About
Suzanne Dawson,
40+ years of experience
M.M. Piano Pedagogy and Performance
With more than four decades of professional teaching experience and advanced degrees in Piano Pedagogy and Performance, I offer thoughtful , structured instruction tailored to each student's goals and learning style. My studio emphasizes healthy technique, musical understanding, and joyful progress.
I welcome motivated students of all ages - from six, to adults beginning or returning to the piano - and design lessons to build both technical skill, lasting confidence, and both classical and contemporary fluency. I work best with students and families who value regular practice and steady growth.
My formal training includes a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance and a Bachelors degree in Piano Pedagogy and Performance, along with postgraduate studies in jazz, composition, and songwriting. I am also a published composer. I hold national certification with the American Music Teachers Association, and I'm the current president of the New Mexico Federation of Music Clubs and regularly encourage my students to participate in the annual Gold Cup Junior Festival.
Monthly sessions include three private lessons - 30, 45, or 60 minutes depending on age and level - and one group performance class at no extra charge. I am happy to meet with you before you decide on a teacher.

Suzanne is teaching my son piano. She is very patient and super kind. U can really tell that she enjoys what she does, and gets satisfaction out of teaching.

There for an hour that felt like 5 minutes, and out the door with more experience and interest in piano than I thought I'd ever have. I rarely meet teachers this welcoming, patient, professional, and attentive.
Well-qualified, and it shows.

Pianolessons with Ms. Suzanne were amazing! She helped me stay organized and focused without being too strict of difficult with the practice planner and metronome policing. The best thing about taking lessons with Ms. Suzanne is that she always finds pieces that I enjoy, helping em stay motivated and excited about piano for years! Additionally, she teaches all the theory and knowledge required to compose original songs, and will work with students of all ages to put together a piece that they have created from the ground up. Taking lessons with her was one of the highlights of growing up, and has inspired me to keep playing long into the future! Hands down, the best way to learn piano in the state!

Daniel, what a character you are! Metronome policing? I guess you're right about that! I'm sure you know by now, how important it is too. ;) Thanks for taking the time away from your studies to review my studio! Always so very proud of you.

For over 3 years, Suzanne has been our daughter's piano teacher. She has far exceeded our expectations and is exceptionally talented in her ability to teach and develop her students. It is such a rarity to find a teacher of her caliber. Additionally, we have watched all of her students at recitals and competitions and are amazed at the progress and growth as well as their skills and preparedness at such events. Lastly, we deeply appreciate Suzanne's patience and kindness with our daughter who tends to get out of focus easily and difficult to teach. Suzanne is by far the best teacher we have ever worked with.

I could not have asked for a better piano teacher. Not only did I acquire a solid foundation of traditional piano repertoire, theory, scales, chords, sight reading, and the like, but I was also pushed to explore. Being able to foster creativity in a vast array of musical styles and practices is a rare gift because it takes not only heart and encouragement but also the skills and knowledge to share such variety with students. Suzanne exemplifies a perfect balance of the two sides of the musical coin. I can honestly say that I would not be studying to become a music teacher without having her as a model and mentor!

Jana! You don't know how much it means to know one has inspired a student to pursue his or her talents with as much passion as you have. God Bless You!
