Introduction: I have a bachelor’s degree in music education with primary instruments in piano and voice. I also went to graduate school at the University of Missouri at Kansas City music conservatory with a major in piano performance. I have taught private lessons and was also a music teacher in public and private schools with over 35 years of experience. I have played in secular and worship bands for many years with experience in reading chord charts and the ability to play by ear, which is why I offer services in a wide variety of music as well as traditional lessons. My goal is to find the interest of the student and an area in which the student excels so that it is a more enjoyable experience for the student. It is extremely rewarding to see students grow and become comfortable and confident.

I worked with Joyce when I was younger and she was a great piano teacher. She was knowledgeable, very patient and I always had fun at my lessons! I went to the American Music Association when I was 11 and got 2nd place out of a large number of students. I moved and had to stop taking lessons, but now I've moved back and my son is going to start taking lessons from her when he turns 3! I highly recommend Joyce!

Ms. Hamilton is a wonderful piano instructor. My 6 years old son has enjoyed his lessons and has developed a strong music foundation for the past 4 months. She is very patient and caring. Every step of the way, she makes sure that my son understands his lessons and help him succeed. She writes down what he needs to practice at home and follows up with him the next lessons. I'm very pleased that my son has learned his piano in a truely caring and warm environment. I would recommend her to anyone.

My piano lessons began on December 16, 2016 when I was 58 years old. I had never played a musical instrument in my life and took a leap of faith in this new endeavor. I am completely satisfied with my learning experience. In fact, I feel so fortunate to have met Joyce Hamilton. I was looking for a professional piano teacher who was educated and polished, not simply taking on a hobby. I am pleased with Joyce because she has high standards for me no matter what. I never feel intimidated by her and I always feel comfortable being with her. What I find most wonderful about my piano lessons is that I am not rushed; Joyce is not only about goal setting but also about the progress in the moment. This aspect is far more important to me at this time in my life. Joyce has students of all ages; in fact, my 14 year-old granddaughter just began taking piano lessons from her. One can see crayons and rewards in her studio for the little ones and when I am taking a lesson I record her playing a piece on my smartphone so I may hear the rhythm and see her fingerings during the week when I practice. The most important teaching characteristic that I value from Joyce is her integrity. I want a teacher that is honest with me about my playing. I want to hear the truth about all aspects of my piano playing...positive and negative. Yet she is always kind and supportive when I miss the mark. What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My fee is $30 for half hour lessons, $45 for 45 minutes, and a discounted price of $55 for 1 hour. The first lesson is free!
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Each student is different which means that I adjust to each unique personality. The first question I ask is "Do you have any previous experience in music?" Whether experienced or not I try to make each student feel comfortable about singing or playing the first time especially if he or she is nervous. Once they are comfortable with me it makes learning much more enjoyable.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Bachelor's degree in music education with emphasis on piano and voice. Worked one year on masters in piano performance at UMKC (Kansas City) Music Conservatory.
