Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do cats have to get groomed?

It’s not crazy to have your cat groomed. Grooming will keep your cat’s fur soft and silky as well as give you early warning about any health concerns. Regular grooming can also help reduce the volume of hair your cat may be shedding and keep your longhair kitty cool if you live in a warm climate. Professionals competently groom your cat and are trained to manage them if they resist being groomed, while you may get scratched doing the same task. The national average price for cat grooming is $50-$70. Pet grooming prices may vary based on the task. For example, a bath and brush for shorthair cats may be $15, $20 for medium-hair cats, and $25 for a longhair. Cat groomers can also keep your cat’s ears cleaned, trim their nails, and provide haircuts if needed. Average prices for haircuts can vary from $30 to $95 or more, depending on whether the cat is shy or aggressive and whether their coat is in good condition, matted, or otherwise difficult to groom.

How much should cat grooming cost?

Keeping your cat groomed is an important part of maintaining their good health. The national average cost for cat grooming ranges between $50 and $70, with prices varying based on where you live and the services you request. Your cat’s temperament can also affect grooming prices. Scratching and hissing during a groomer visit can raise rates an average of $5-$10, or more, as hazard pay. Larger cats and long-haired cats that take longer to groom will also usually cost more. Here are some examples of cat grooming average costs:

  • Shave down or lion cut: $35-$60. These cuts preserve the hair around the face and tip of the tail but shave down the entire body. The lion cut is often recommended for extremely matted hair is exceedingly matted, for extreme heat, or for cats who are suffering from hairballs.
  • Ear cleaning and nail trim: $30.
  • Nail trim: $10-$15.
  • Bath and nail trim: $45.
  • Bath and sanitary trim: $55. A sanitary trim clips the hair on a cat’s behind to prevent fecal matting in longhair cats or cats that have mobility issues.
  • Bath, blow-dry, brush out, nail trim and ear cleaning: $40.
  • Full haircut, bath, and nail trim: $45-$95, depending on matting.

Where can you get your cat groomed?

Cat grooming keeps your cat’s fur tangle-free and clean. Most businesses that offer dog grooming or general pet grooming also offer cat grooming; some businesses even specialize solely in cat grooming. Look for a professional who has training grooming cats or belongs to a professional association such as the National Cat Groomers Institute, because cat grooming techniques can be different than for dogs. Cat grooming can encompass a wide range of services. In addition to haircutting, hair detangling and hairstyling, cat groomers can trim cat nails, clean out your cat’s ears, give flea baths, demat, trim facial fur, bathe and even blow-dry your cat. Health safety and etiquette requires your cat to be in good health and have all their vaccinations before using grooming services.

Blue was great. Cats aren't the easiest to groom and Blue was very patient and caring. My Baxter is happy and so am I.

I had my two cats groomed for the first time and they both look so good! Krystle did an amazing job and made them feel super comfortable so they could enjoy the grooming process as much as possible. I’m very happy with both of their haircuts and they are too.

Blue kept in contact from the first time I contacted her until the time she arrived. We admired her experience in how to handle each of our cats! She really “knows her stuff” and adapts her service to meet each cat’s individual needs and personality. She also shared how to keep the cats’ fur in good shape until the next grooming. I highly recommend using Blue’s services for all your pets’ grooming needs!

Before hiring Blue to groom my cat I saw how high her stars/ratings were so I didn’t look too much into and now I realize I should have. After having Blue “groom” my cat I just went through all her bad reviews and they all sound exactly right. She is too aggressive with animals, bends their limbs in uncomfortable ways, grabs the back of their neck very hard and then wonders why the animal is trying to get away. My cat has been groomed multiple times and every time the groomer has been way more gentle and never grabbed them by their necks and help them down the way Blue did. My cat has always been calm with groomers and let them turn him over and cleans his ears and everything. She’s man handling him aggressively and hurting him by grabbing his neck and then calling him a bad cat for wanting to get away from her. Very disappointed with the service and wanted this lady out of my house asap and she just made herself at home asking for a drink and when I offered water asked if we had any soda and after she was done with the grooming, sat there on her phone, not cleaning up any of her stuff. I almost had to ask her to start cleaning up her stuff and leave cause she wouldn’t get out of the hair and off her phone and she had us sweep up all the cat hair afterwards.

Blue kept me up to date on her arrival time which is fantastic. Being that this was my first home nail trim and grooming she offered great advice on how to prepare Snowy (cat) and the house for the service. Blue is outstanding in her capabilities, efficiency and genuine concern for both pet and pet parent. The ability to have grooming services done in your own home is wonderful for shy animals and those who are unable to transport their pet to a groomer. Snowy and I look forward to Blue's next visit!

I had a great experience working with Blue’s! We were able to get my large, very angry, very matted cat shaved down in record time considering he was not having it from the get go. I appreciate being able to be present with the grooming and her firm but caring work. Definitely not a job just anyone will do! Thanks again.

Our older cat had tons of really large mats. We normally brush them all out, but this summer, for some reason, it got ahead of us. Blue was prompt with scheduling, showed up on time, and worked with the speed of an Olympian! I swear one minute this cat had hair, and then I blinked and she didn't. Blue gave us tons of tips and advice on how to keep up on maintaining her mats, and even toys and diet advice! We absolutely LOVE that we got to be a part of the grooming experience because it allowed us to make sure our baby stayed calm (well calmer) and the process went smoothly. It was so convenient to have her come to our house as well. We didn't have to take our cat anywhere or stress her out. Blue was fast, friendly, and you seriously can't beat the prices. I would highly recommend her to anyone, but especially those with cats who need some help.
