I hired Chef Marckende Pierre to do an in-home private chef & cooking lesson combo for my dad's 75th birthday. Chef Pierre created a fusion menu, he arrived early, and he prepared a fantastic meal. Marckende and my dad talked about all the different cooking methods, and my mom (who is a picky eater) said that she loved it. I have never hired a personal chef before. I feel like I stumbled upon a treasure. I would totally hire Chef Pierre again, and I would recommend him to a friend in a heartbeat

We have hired Chef Dan twice - for our wedding and then a few years later for a special birthday party. Both events were outstanding! Chef Dan was wonderful to work with. He was helpful in offering ideas about dishes that would hold up well with a crowd of our size, go well together and present well too. Everyone commented on how flavorful our food was & how beautiful our displays were too. Chef Dan & his staff were professional and friendly. They made sure everyone was satisfied especially the host & hostess. When they returned the second time they pointed out all the renovations we made and remembered the complete layout of the first party without being told a thing. It was amazing. They have a REAL attention to detail, are genuine & the food is second to none. I also recommended Chef Dan to my friend for her wedding 1 year ago. She had the same outstanding experience. For me it was wonderful to see Chef Dan again & have some more of his fabulous cooking.

Fortunately for us Tony was in the UK the time we were having a celebratory gathering. We decided to hire Tony to allow us a hassle free evening/day of cooking allowing us focus on our guests and entertain them. He listened to what we liked to eat on a day to day basis, what we didn't like and what we wanted to surprise our guests with! He equally came up with some great ideas and recipes of his own. It was all round input in the end. He delivered a great gnocci dish with a superb tomato based sauce accompanying some grilled meats and fresh al dente broccoli with toasted pine nuts. For dessert he did an Italian take on an 'Eton Mess' but instead of strawberries we decided on mangos and pineapples topped off with a limoncello sauce. Wonderful! The evening was topped off with some fabulous Italian coffee, more limoncello (if you dare) and some home made petit fours that were freshly baked and still warm. A great evening Tony. Well done. You were a delight to have over to our house and we are certainly not adverse to outsourcing a chef again. Please let us know when you are next in the UK. We certainly need to be talking about an event in March and my special birthday in May :)

It was magical - Chef Jeff Mauro showed up at our front door with two massive coolers and an arsenal of specialty chef supplies. Our kitchen became his playground as he turned every burner on high and let the four course festivities begin. Our daughter, who'd worked as a server in Jeff's Jam Restaurant for the summer, convinced Chef to cook dinner with her in our home before she went away to school. All I can say is WOW - we were in for an unexpected off-the-charts treat! We have been lucky enough to spend time seeking out exceptional dining experiences in Chicago, NYC & Paris from finding the perfect pancake to seeking out Michelin Star chefs going out on their own...and nothing compared to this evening. Chef Mauro is one of those people who's born to be a chef. His innate passion for food and commitment to detail shined with every course he crafted. Truly I didn't know food could taste so phenomenal. For the first course, Chef used ingredients from our garden to create an unbelievable heirloom tomato and mozzarella salad. For the second course, he prepared poached sea bass atop a bed of crispy green apple slaw. For the third course, Chef sliced and plated duck a l'orange besides a pillow of quinoa, topped with a poached quail egg and peppercorn garnish. And for course four, Chef seared the most tender venison medallions, accompanied by a house-made sauce and a sweet corn salad. Despite my course by course description, no words can do a night with Chef Mauro justice. It was so much fun. Chef engaged us every step of the way. He enlisted us in building the works of art that became our plates for each course. He paired wine with each course and described the "do's and don'ts" of cooking techniques and flavor pairings. And he created a truly unforgettable experience. 10/10 would recommend highly!

Jenny is great at making meals to my specifications- low salt, low fat, etc. I love her salads and that her dressings are all homemade. She can also make sweets a little bit healthier but still taste amazing. Love the black bean brownies! Jenny always arrives on time and is great at cooking for large groups. I would highly recommend her.

The class was informative and fun, with the perfect balance of hands-on cooking and demonstrations. We got to take home some delicious recipes handcrafted by Tessa - which I will definitely using for Thanksgivings to come!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.
