We are moving out of state and had some old furniture that we just couldn't seem to get rid of. We decided to look on Thumbtack for a removal contractor and had several replies, Rick gave the best quote so we called him. By 8 am the next morning, he had a full couch, a love seat, all the cushions, a full sized recliner, a twin mattress, a twin box frame, a coffee table and two end tables all expertly packed on his one pickup truck and strapped down good...nothing would be flying off. He's a Navy man with a can-do attitude and a really nice guy besides. We aren't done with him, we have more stuff to get rid of before we leave, he will be getting the call. Go ahead and call him, he's not sketchy or weird, he just shows up, shakes your hand with a smile and gets to work. Highly recommended!

Even though I had a initially had requested a different work order in thumbtack for plumbing issues, it was completed by a different contractor. However, I still needed dryway ceiling repair and contacted Mr. Gaitan. Him and his team was always on time, courteous, and very reliable. If you need any dryway repair, he is the go to guy. He was able to blend my damaged cieling perfectly with rest of the cieling. Thank you and I really do appreciate everything.

This review is to offset a screwed up review I left on this contractor that was supposed to go to another contractor. I did not mean to leave the review for this contractor and am very sorry for the misunderstanding. Disalvo works hard for every 5 Star he as received. Al was great. He was responsive and easy to schedule a time with to get together. He’s down to Earth and clearly has experience in many trades around the house (He was at my house to repair drywall but took on a job to fix a fan and succeeded with ease). He was courteous and even made a trip to the store to get paint and a part required for the fan. I was happy with and trusting of his character to leave the house for over an hour to take care of some errands. No complaints whatsoever. Let him be the one to take on your next project

Terry put up about 90 feet of chain link fence in my backyard. He did an outstanding job. He did it right and went the extra mile. Super happy with his work. He came the days he said he would come and he was great about returning phone calls... unlike a lot of other contractors out there. His prices were extremely reasonable. I felt totally comfortable having him at my house, and around my family. He'll be coming back when we are ready for more fencing. Hire him, you'll be glad you did.

A One Carpet Cleaning did a tremendous job cleaning a couch that was left for ruin by previous roommates! It looks and smells brand new! The customer service from Lisa and Renee were top notch, as Lisa was quick to respond to my request via the Thumbtack Application, and had somebody at my home the next morning! Would highly recommended if you are looking for any type of heavy duty cleaning!!!

I started using Pamela's services about 8 years ago. I own several rental/vacation properties in town. She has stripped and restained cabinets, chose paint colors and then painted (all four of the interiors of my houses, & exterior of my 2 story 3000 SF house), chose wallpaper, granite, flooring, hardware, fixtures, drawn remodel plans, oversaw all plumbing & electrical work, & worked with my contractor for larger projects. She personally tiled my kitchen counters with Galaxy granite and refaced my fireplace to match. She also installed a glass backsplash, & gave my kitchen the wow it needed on a tight budget! I have been impressed with her hands on capabilities and knowledge. Pamela has a keen eye for picking colors, flooring, hardware, counters, styles, etc. Her ability to understand what people want is uncanny: She can see the forest through the trees. She can design a space that not only keeps pace with current style trends but keep it unique enough to not just be another carbon-copy. My last property took the cake. She fully furnished my entire 4 bedroom vacation rental including all linens, kitchen appliances, cooking supplies., beds, furniture, and all items needed to be a fully functional vacation rental & staged everything by herself. It bears mentioning that I give her a very tight and strict budget, and she always finds a way to make everything look expensive & sticks to the budget I've set. I never have to lift a finger when I hire Pamela. This last job she did prompted me to write about my experiences the past eight years (& seeing some pictures on her profile of work she's done for me throughout the years). My guests always comment on the house and I can only say "thank you, Pamela did it" She has great vision, work ethic, and will treat you right. I recommend her services fully.

Steve is amazing. He removed two 6'8' cheap, contractor grade interior doors, cut new holes for and installed two solid wood 8' doors, and then re-did the casing, baseboard, etc. around those doors as well as a whole master closet. The doors work beautifully. I've had other interior doors installed by others in the past, and the doors don't hang perfectly even, so they always want to close or they always want to fall open. These doors are hung perfectly. Wherever you tell the door to stay, it stays. In addition, I had another interior door that was hanging off of the door jam and totally stripped and he fixed that for me too. His work is perfect. Even better -- he is very professional. A lovely, friendly, individual. I would hire him again in a heartbeat.

American Design Co. is EXCELLENT. ADCO's quality of work and customer service is above and beyond any other contractors I have ever used. Attention to detail...both structural and cosmetic is AMAZING!!! ADCO renovated Master Bath from old tub and glass shower stall into a wheelchair accessible shower. Demolition of old and construction of new was done in a timely manner. Overall cost savings was so much better than other contactors without sacrificing quality. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND American Design Co. Thank you Dustin and Deanna for making our lives easier!!!

Tim did a truly professional job. I had a broken water main leading from the street into my home due to tree roots. Tim gave me an estimate, set a time to due the job, showed up when he said he would and completed it in a matter of hours. He called me out to see the repairs he made before filling in the hole that he had to dig to get to the main water pipe. He used Quality Materials and then packed sand around the new pipe removing large rocks and debris from the area to prevent future damage. Oh, I forgot to mention that the location of the break in the water main was under the sidewalk leading from the shut off into my home. Great work, fantastic estimate, and as I mentioned before a "Truly Professional job." I highly recommend him for your project.

I appreciated working with John. I got the impression that our project mattered to him, which often times isn't the case with other contractors trying to get in and out. He even helped me with installing a toilet which went above and beyond the project scope. Thanks John!

Very professional with a warm touch and the work was completed to my satisfaction. I would recommend Diverse Decors to anyone who is looking to make their home feel more like home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
