Brandon and Shane did an amazing job helping us with our move. While some heavy items (like our monstrous treadmill) initially seemed daunting, they quickly triumphed and got things moved efficiently and carefully. The only downside to the day was that they were unable to get the large moving truck, so they got a medium truck instead. They were able to make two trips, and they were so good at packing that there was only a minimal efficiency lost. Overall they were amazing. They carefully wrapped all furniture, took apart/rebuilt furniture as needed, and treated everything with the utmost care. They definitely live up to their "Perfect" name!

Scott did several small projects for me - replacing kitchen lights, placing a cover on an outside light (and tightening the connection to the wall), and putting together two lawn chairs. He was on time, worked quickly, and was very professional. I will continue to hire him for future projects!

We have used Sky Van Lines twice in 4 months, once to move us to storage and again to move us when our townhouse was ready. They are fast, dependable, and professional. They wrap pieces carefully in plastic or moving pads, take things apart and put them back together again. We have also recommended them to friends with great results. We interviewed several moving companies when we sold our house. Sky Van Lines was the best quote for the most professional service. Thanks again, guys!

I am a newly empty nester who also moved all the way across the country at the same time. I was overwhelmed with the amount of stuff I had AND I needed help decorating my new home for just the two of us (and my little dog, who loved Ginger immediately). Ginger made me feel at ease the moment I met her. She took the time to fully understand me and my needs by asking the right questions and listening closely and patiently to my responses, even taking notes at times. She gave clear and easy to follow instructions and worked by my side the entire time. After the first day with Ginger, I felt I could really use more help from her and decided to purchase her 20 hours package. On a few occasions, I was called away to deal with other tasks, like working with the cable man, and Ginger kept working by organizing or sorting without me. When I returned, she would show me what she did and how it followed the process she put in place. She NEVER threw anything away or donated anything without my permission. Throughout the organization process, Ginger would ask me how I felt about what we've done so far or how I felt about the items we were putting away. I never felt pressured to throw away or donate anything even though we threw away several garbage bags and boxes full of items, and Ginger drove away with several boxes of donated items in her car to take to the charity of my choice. Ginger also took the time to explain her vision for each room or area and offered suggestions on alternate decorating options. She researched questions and always followed up. She shared pictures on her phone to help me see what she was talking about. She even went shopping with me, so I could make sure I purchased the bins that were right for me and our organization projects. Without her there, I would have been so lost and overwhelmed. Now, I have a kitchen that is set up beautifully, a master bathroom that is organized and functional, a huge start to my sewing and crafts area, and she even helped me with my big mess of a jewelry box. My husband is very happy with how the house is progressing as well and took advantage of Ginger's advice in his projects (such as organizing the garage, arranging the office space and placement of pictures) along the way as well! Thanks to Ginger, I feel empowered with the tools, education and her suggestions to continue to organize and decorate my house in a way that I will love. I will definitely call on her expertise again in the future should I need help incorporating newly acquired estate furniture or if I get stumped. Thank you Ginger!

LaShonda is a PEACH! We needed move-out cleaning done for our apartment on short notice. LaShonda was able to accommodate us for a more than reasonable price. No one could be home for when we had her scheduled so I texted her instructions for entry and payment. I really appreciate that she kept me updated on her progress. She let me know when she was on her way, when she arrived, when she had finished and what she had done. We left the place in pretty terrible condition and had a small amount of miscellaneous items left in the apartment that we still needed to pack and come back for later. LaShonda did an excellent job at cleaning EVERYTHING! The baseboards and window sills were particularly impressive. She even packed up the miscellanea and stacked it neatly by the front door so that we were able to just grab it and go. That is truly service that is above and beyond and not something that was expected of her. We were so impressed that we have hired her to do ongoing cleaning at our new place. Thank you LaShonda! You have made a very stressful event like moving a little more bearable. H

We've only completed the move-out portion thus far; however I must give kudos to 'Move 4 Less' on their willingness to work with my somewhat complicated move. I'm still unsure of where my final destination will be on this move... The three guys that showed up to empty out my apartment were very polite and completed the job rather quickly. (side note: I chose to pack the majority -- everything apart from large furniture -- of my stuff before their arrival which probably sped things up quite a bit; however that was my choice.) They handled my California King bed, a reclining love seat and all other furniture without issue. I will update this review (assuming I am able...) after delivery as well. Lord only knows when that will be... ;-)

Jay and his associate, I forgot the name, were great. I will definitely recommend and use them again next year. They were quick and efficient with moving my belongings. There were a couple blemishes but I did not expect everything to be perfect. Their supervisor called me after the move was completed and provided a discount on my next move for the minor issues. I appreciate feeling valued as a customer. The movers worked their butts off. Again, I will recommend and use again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
