I am in the process of selling my home. During the home inspection the large built in jetted tub in the master bathroom leaked extreme amounts of water into the garage. I called all over town and nobody wanted to help me. I explained my problem to Jasson and he came over the same day and was able to diagnose and fix the problem. Jason is just an excellent person and he will be the first person I call the next time I need a repair.

The job that I asked Robert to do was a small job of replacing a faucet. I don't know much about pluming so I goggled all the parts that make up a faucet replacement from the water lines to the faucet itself and went out and got it all so that I was prepared for him when he arrived. Robert arrived and asked a few questions as to what I wanted in the completed job, he was courteous and pointed out an issue that I was not aware of concerning how badly my sink was sealed to the counter top. He had a few questions in-between, but nothing that disturbed my work at home business. About 40 or so minutes later he stated that he was done, the faucet was installed, parts that were not needed were there for me to take back and the sink was sealed to the counter top. I fully expected the final price to be higher than what was quoted, but in fact it was 33% lower. I have met an honest man, and I will call him again with any issues I may have for my home repair issues. What Could Have Been Better: Nothing - Excellent work sir! Thanks Chris

Mark has completed two major bathroom renovations for us, and we could not be happier with his work and both completed projects. Both bathrooms included everything from wall reconfigurations, new floors, wall tile, custom glass for showers, new tubs, toilets and cabinets. He sources trustworthy specialists, and is very fair in what he charges. He is very thorough in his work, and prides himself in making his customer happy. Whenever we are in need of any kind of remodel work, we will always call Mark to see if he is available. Do not hesitate to trust him with your home project.

I had a number of projects around my new house that I needed help with and found Jeremy Bertrand of Knight Carpentry & Construction through Thumbtack. Jeremy was absolutely wonderful. He accomplished everything from moving curtain rods that had been hung in the wrong place to repairing walls with anchors left in them to installing a dimmer switch and bathroom fixtures. He was extremely punctual, polite and a perfectionist in his work. He's also very experienced in home building and remodeling and able to do all types of repairs and remodeling in the home. I highly recommend him.

I remodeled my kitchen which included removing a structural shear wall. SHF International walked me through the process of hiring an engineer to do the structural calculations and organized getting the construction permit and hiring all the tradesmen to complete the work. SHF International is the only general contractor I trust, period. They saved me time and money by figuring out the most cost efficient way to implement the remodel I had in mind. All other contractors quoted me 30-50% more for the same job. In fact, SHF International went above and beyond their scope of work. When I received the final engineering drawings, SHF International reviewed them for me to make sure they were correct and actually caught several mistakes the engineer made! Typically contracts love with the drawings have mistakes, because then they can charge you extra for changing the design (change order). If I didn't have SHF International he project would have been a complete disaster. In addition, the owner and all of the employees and subcontractors of SHF International all have former experience working for the biggest general contractors in Las Vegas (Marnell Corrao, Perini, Pena, etc.) which built many of the Resorts and Casinos on the Las Vegas Strip. No other residential contractor has that type of quality staff and depth of experience. These guys are for real! In my opinion, if I was doing a home remodel or building from the ground up, I would ONLY use SHF International, or I wouldn't do it at all. With anyone else you will risk pay too much, the project will get botched, or you will get scammed.

Dave has worked on 2 of my homes in 2 very different locations. He provided excellent customer service by listening carefully to what I thought I wanted; made recommendations on how to achieve the same results but in a more economical and yet still quality manner, and kept me informed throughout the jobs of glitches and accomplishments. Dave has done drywall, tile, flooring, new construction, remodeling and design for me. I brag that my home is his showcase. I highly recommend him. Sherry

Mr Ramberg did an excellent job repairing a really large hole in my wall created by my clumsiness. He came out at the time the agreed upon time and was a genuinely nice person. Additionally, he did a great job for the price he charged. I'd highly recommend Mr Ramberg for any of your home repair and/or painting needs!

Desert Sage Construction is the best construction company in the Las Vegas area. I hired them to remodel and design/build our kitchen and master bath. They did an AMAZING JOB!! Ryan Rudolph, the project manager I worked with, was so attentive to our needs and informative. Our house is our dream home now, it's absolutely perfect. We have property by Lake Mead, and Desert Sage Construction will definitely be building our lake home when we are ready this fall!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
