The food was absolutely fabulous! It was a wonderful variety, there was something for the vegans, vegetarians, and the meat eaters. The food was fresh, delectable, and just the right temperature. Everything was ready at just the right time too. All I had to do is tell Helen the kinds of foods I wanted, and she created the perfect menu. She was even able to adapt her menu for my friends that have food allergies. I highly recommend Aunty Helen's Kitchen for your next event!

We hired LjP's & Flutterbyes for an private engagement dinner for me and my fiancé. This was one of the most important nights of my life and I was so nervous! Laurajean and her wonderful chef attendant Robert made the most amazing meal. 5+ stars! Not only was the food delicious, they were professional and polite. They even made a special plate with "Will you marry me?" in icing with the ring box in the middle. My fiancé said yes and everyone was so impressed with the food. Don't look any further, LjP's is the way to go! Thank you for an awesome experience!

I would just say " SIMPLY FANTASTIC!!" Steve and his crew put on a full spread just the way we ordered it and were very friendly, enjoyed the celebration with us, and just delivered an awesome experience!! Adrian showed up on time and was very professional. He cooked in the heat of late afternoon. He was pleasant and efficient. Most of my guests were satisfied and enjoyed the food. Some felt the food needed more flavor and the rice and beans were average. There was a small puddle of grease left on the patio from cooking, everything else was cleaned up. Overall we were happy with the tacos.

The food at Mamie's is delicious. My husband and I love the food. I enjoyed the seafood gumbo. The seafood in the gumbo tasted fresh. My husband had the fried chicken and enjoyed it. Crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Looking forward to more dishes added to an already excellent menu. Excellent service. Everyone made us feel at home. We will be back.

Chef Kas made hors d'oeuvres for my guests right out of my own kitchen. It was perfect for our event as our guests needed finger foods they could walk around with so they could mingle while listening to the music or bidding at the Silent Auction. He made it fun as he kept preparing a different treat every twenty minutes or so. It was fun to watch him in action preparing treats like pasty shells with a sweet potato filling, buffalo mozzarella and tomato skewers and stuffed peppers. I know that I will be calling him for any future events that I may have. Truly Amazing! Thanks Chef Kas!

As a part of my detox program, I wanted to do the Whole30. I found that doing this with 3 kids is quite a challenge so I hired Chef Nick to prepare my meals for me. Chef Nick really worked with me in figuring out my meal plans for my taste. Not only did he do an excellent job and deliver the food as planned, his food was a joy to eat. You can tell when you meet him that he loves what he does and he loves food.

Roxanne was wonderful! Initial planning emails: Wonderful and friendly! Roxanne was so good at reassuring me and guiding me. I had no idea what I needed, and she helped me decide on what would fit my small reception best. Payment: I totally messed up my method of payment and made Roxanne have to wait past the final deadline for her money. She was so patient and gracious about it. We checked in with each other via email until the issue was resolved. Day of: Roxanne let me know what information she needed to properly deliver the food and supplies several days before my event. She was on time, prompt with set up, gave a clear explanation of what went with what. She gave me a much-needed hug before the wedding started. Food: Every single thing was delicious. We had Caprese salad cups, Veggie eggrolls, Stuffed mushrooms, Olive bread, and Shrimp cocktail. I originally asked for enough for 35, but then asked if I ought to over order for 40 just in case. She was very reassuring and promised there would be enough for 40. All my guests very honestly told me they loved the food and that they thought it was a good amount for such a short gathering of about 2.5 hours. The Olive bread really was excellent, and the Caprese salad cups were super tasty! The egg rolls disappeared quickly! Presentation and set up: As promised, the chaffing dishes kept the food just right. Even the stuffed mushrooms which would have been ideally been kept warm in the oven were perfectly fine in the chaffing dish. We had to add some extra ice to the shrimp, but that was literally the only thing we had to attend to. Everything else was set up properly. Plenty of utensils, plates, napkins, serving spoons, etc. Clean up was a breeze. Everything left behind was disposable. Price: I will be honest, I have no idea what catering costs. I've never catered anything before that didn't involve the words "sub sandwich tray." But Roxanne had the kinds of food and service we wanted for the price we were willing to pay. So I have no complaints. :D Overall: Though I don't anticipate having another event that needs catering, I would absolutely use Say Goodnight Gracie catering again! And I would recommend her to any friend who needed catering, large or small.

Chef Mauro has done six separate events for us personally and through our business over the last four years. He has done small intimate dinners for six in our condo in Chicago and can be discreet and professional. He has a good sense of wine pairings and he is always willing to work with us to pick the best food products. He can also be very social and he is happy to interact with our guests at larger events. He is good at explaining each course and how the food was prepared and he makes the guests feel at home and really can make your event special. We have also hired him for larger parties and fundraisers through our law practice. On one occasion we hired him to go to Colorado with our family for a ski week. He prepared the meals, after purchasing the food and wine. We would come home every night after skiing to a five-star meal with wine. He cleaned up and put everything away did the shopping and let my wife and I enjoy our family vacation and our guests without running to the City Market and doing all the clean up after a full day of skiing. The cost was actually no more then if we ate out every night at a good restaurant on the hill and the quality of the food was healthier and better prepared. My wife was impressed that Chief Mauro wasted nothing. He would do breakfest for the family and our guests and even sent us out in the morning with boxed lunches to eat on the mountain. We would highly recommend Chief Mauro for your next private event, fundraiser, or ski week. My wife and I will be happy to answer any specific questions you have. Feel free to call us at our office at 574-946-6621 or at my cell 312-218-0061. Dale and Stacey Starkes, Starkes Law Offices.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
