We are moving out of state and had some old furniture that we just couldn't seem to get rid of. We decided to look on Thumbtack for a removal contractor and had several replies, Rick gave the best quote so we called him. By 8 am the next morning, he had a full couch, a love seat, all the cushions, a full sized recliner, a twin mattress, a twin box frame, a coffee table and two end tables all expertly packed on his one pickup truck and strapped down good...nothing would be flying off. He's a Navy man with a can-do attitude and a really nice guy besides. We aren't done with him, we have more stuff to get rid of before we leave, he will be getting the call. Go ahead and call him, he's not sketchy or weird, he just shows up, shakes your hand with a smile and gets to work. Highly recommended!

Even though I had a initially had requested a different work order in thumbtack for plumbing issues, it was completed by a different contractor. However, I still needed dryway ceiling repair and contacted Mr. Gaitan. Him and his team was always on time, courteous, and very reliable. If you need any dryway repair, he is the go to guy. He was able to blend my damaged cieling perfectly with rest of the cieling. Thank you and I really do appreciate everything.

After the first meeting he quoted a price and we agreed to it. He had to leave that day and would meet me on Tuesday morning to write a contract We again agreed. Tues came and he did not show up nor did he leave a message. It is now Wed afternoon and we still have not heard from him. I will be looking for a new contractor.

Terry put up about 90 feet of chain link fence in my backyard. He did an outstanding job. He did it right and went the extra mile. Super happy with his work. He came the days he said he would come and he was great about returning phone calls... unlike a lot of other contractors out there. His prices were extremely reasonable. I felt totally comfortable having him at my house, and around my family. He'll be coming back when we are ready for more fencing. Hire him, you'll be glad you did.

I have just completed a project with Dennis Hardy or DWWWHardy LLC. I have many years of experience with general contractors, primarily in high rise fit up, remodel, tear down and new INTERIOR projects. I have worked as a project manager for a major Corporation. As such I can speak with knowledge and experience having dealt with most trades. AT my age, 75, And getting used to persons trying. to take advantage of me I must also mention that I perceived none of that with Dennis, With this preamble, I would like to comment on my experience with Dennis and his crew. This was one of the most satisfying and pleasant experiences I could ever have wished for. Bid was fair and honest, workers arrived when promised, skilled workers were quick and thorough, very courteous, Dennis was there most of the time. It has been a pleasure to work with them, and as the the occasion arises, I will be sure to call on them again. Thank you thumbtack. It was not easy to choose from the excellent contractors you connected me with. As the need arises I will surely call on you again.

I was very pleased with the work done by Jd remodeling. Ceiling fans were replaced in two bed rooms. I had a very favorable experience and would recommend this contractor to anyone looking for quality service at a fair price.

Ruben did an excellent job. I was unsure about using a handyman vs a contractor but Ruben was great. On time, explained exactly what he was going to do and was done with the project when he said he would be. I will definitely use him for any other projects that come up.

I started using Pamela's services about 8 years ago. I own several rental/vacation properties in town. She has stripped and restained cabinets, chose paint colors and then painted (all four of the interiors of my houses, & exterior of my 2 story 3000 SF house), chose wallpaper, granite, flooring, hardware, fixtures, drawn remodel plans, oversaw all plumbing & electrical work, & worked with my contractor for larger projects. She personally tiled my kitchen counters with Galaxy granite and refaced my fireplace to match. She also installed a glass backsplash, & gave my kitchen the wow it needed on a tight budget! I have been impressed with her hands on capabilities and knowledge. Pamela has a keen eye for picking colors, flooring, hardware, counters, styles, etc. Her ability to understand what people want is uncanny: She can see the forest through the trees. She can design a space that not only keeps pace with current style trends but keep it unique enough to not just be another carbon-copy. My last property took the cake. She fully furnished my entire 4 bedroom vacation rental including all linens, kitchen appliances, cooking supplies., beds, furniture, and all items needed to be a fully functional vacation rental & staged everything by herself. It bears mentioning that I give her a very tight and strict budget, and she always finds a way to make everything look expensive & sticks to the budget I've set. I never have to lift a finger when I hire Pamela. This last job she did prompted me to write about my experiences the past eight years (& seeing some pictures on her profile of work she's done for me throughout the years). My guests always comment on the house and I can only say "thank you, Pamela did it" She has great vision, work ethic, and will treat you right. I recommend her services fully.

I appreciated working with John. I got the impression that our project mattered to him, which often times isn't the case with other contractors trying to get in and out. He even helped me with installing a toilet which went above and beyond the project scope. Thanks John!

I rehabbed a single family home as a flip. Anthony's work is beyond words. He came in and fixed the previous 2 contractors drywall work, which was atrocious. Anthony takes great care in his work and he will be someone that i use solely in the future. His prices are very reasonable for a rehabber. Anthony completed my job in 4 weeks and that is with other people in his way.. I could write a book on how thorough, fair and attention to detail Anthony and his workers were. You can email me at lvclumper@gmail.com for more information and referrals. If you are rehabbing a home to fix and flip or just need work around your house to complete. Anthony is your man and you should hire him.

For lack of a better term, Harold is most definitely a Full Service contractor! Not only does he absolutely understand what it takes to do the job well, but he does it at the highest level of quality. I needed some rocks removed and grass planted in its place. Harold did that, and then some! I thought the rocks can just be placed at the side of the house. He saw they would serve a better purpose filling out along the edge of the yard where identical rocks were already in place. What a difference! Harold's work transformed my yard into a warm, welcoming, and relaxing place. And on top of it all, he's one of the most honest and nicest people you could hope to meet. I have more jobs planned for Harold because, when you find the best, why keep looking?

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
