Cindy was amazing! She was so knowledgable, as long as you listen and do your homework with your pup... Your dog training should go great! She started working with my puppy when she was about 4 months old.. She is now 6 months old and listens to every cue I give her! I honestly can't thank her enough. She even came to my house to see Bailey in her natural environment.

Sarah responded quickly to our request for help and guidance in training our puppy. She spent several hours with us on her visit. She outlined the program for training and her rational for training. This is a different method than we used in the past with two other dogs. Her methods made sense as they are based on behavior modification of both owner and dog Bryan & Kathy

I started with Lynnae with puppy training. I am now on my 3rd group training. Lynnae is an amazing teacher. She has/is trained me to train my dog. I have learned more than I ever expected and she helps you understand the dogs thought process. She is patient and always willing to help with individual problems. The training stays positive at all times. I highly recommend Lynnae for individual or group lessons.

I would highly recommend My Jet Puppy as a groomer for all your dogs. Erica Roberts, the owner and groomer, is terrific. My dog was not at all anxious throughout the visit and the job was well done. Having the job done at our house was an added bonus and was less tedious for our dog and us. She will be our only groomer from now on.

Very experienced professional and great with both of my dogs. He taught me I need to be more consistent with my actions and he began to show us how to properly start training our dogs. He was extremely versaitaile as I have 1 nervous rescue who needs different things than my purebred shepherd puppy. I am really happy with him and plan on more lessons next week. I know my dogs and I will be happier with Adriel's help. He even brought one of his dogs along and he is the most impressively trained dogs you've ever seen. I am 110% confident with him training us and our dogs. I could not have chosen a better trainer and I'm so relieved we came across him!

Kevin and his son, Kyle both cared for my 10 month old puppy and were great with him. They were in contact with me while I was away to give me updates, and my neighbor contacted me to tell me how impressed she was by the amount of time they spent playing in the yard with my puppy. Kevin and Kyle are dog lovers, and it felt great to know that our puppy was in their care in my absence. Excellent experience.

About

I am originally from Rochester, New York. I've been training dogs for over five years. The main thing that I have learned in doing this is to be patient. Some dogs can be trained faster than others. It really depends on the breed, but all dogs are trainable. You just have to know and use their own instincts that they are born with. I train dogs that are not housebroken, jumping on people, biting, barking, and pulling when you walk them. I can also teach commands depending what your needs are and what you want from your pet. I can come to you or you to me, whichever makes you comfortable. I am looking forward for all of you dog lovers out there to contact me, so you can have control for your family member and not have family, friends or guests be afraid to enter your home or even to lock your family member away when you do have visitors.

About

Many people train their pets, or at least attempt to. But I go beyond that. I love dogs and want to do what I can to make living with them as easy as I can. A lot of people get frustrated because their dog pulls to much when they walk them, or because it won't learn to sit or lay down. I want to alieviate that frustration. I have trained many dogs, both my own and friends and they are amazed. When new people come over and see how many tricks/commands my dogs know and how well behaved they are they say how shocked they are. I own large dogs and I always get people that are scared because of their size. I promise them that they will do nothing other than sniff you, lick you, and wait for you to pet them. By the end of the evening, most want to take them home. I enjoy working with dogs, so I don't see it as a job that needs to be done, but a job that yes, needs to be done, but that I love every minute doing.

Additionally, I have attended many dog training seminars, and I continue to enhance my knowledge. I teach classes at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, and I also do private consultations.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
