Seventy Seven Alley is a relatively new restaurant featuring Netflix's Next Gen Chef London Chase.
Combining his French culinary background and his inspiration from cuisines/cultures across the world, there is a tasting menu on certain days and otherwise an al la carte menu with dishes categorized by their heat, acid, fat, depth, and fat.
As a celebratory meal, my partner and I got to try their 6 course tasting menu. I've never had a tasting menu that was filling and that generous with their portions! The menu changes from week to week. The alcohol pairing ($60 extra) was also delicious and featured sake and wine from different regions.
-Started off with a aqua chile yellowtail that was fresh and had an interesting balance between sweetness and tanginess.
-The pork belly yakitori was a highlight!! The meat was super tender, the fat was rendered nicely. The glaze was sweet, savory, and spicy!
-The maine uni was probably my favorite dish of the night. It was composed of super creamy and foamy uni sabayon on top of fresh Santa Barbara uni with additional roe and some ginger. It was umami to the max!
-The salmon was also very solid. I loved the dashi and the green mango added a crunch that contrasted with the tender semi-cooked salmon.
-The lamb rack mixed a bunch of spices together and had a curry-forward but not straight up curry taste. It came with a salsa macha with utilized 7 nuts and 7 types of peppers. The accompanying watercress salad was horseradish-spicy with some miso savoriness.
-We ended this meal with a hibiscus cheesecake that featured hibiscus in 3 ways (in the cake, powdered, and candied). It came with a sauce that was described to be similar to Jamaican eggnog but with rum. The alcohol was definitely present but did not underwine the spices and the berry-forward floral flavors from the hibiscus.
Chef London was super friendly and honestly an open book. There were lots of opportunities to ask him questions and we all took tequila shots together at the end!! The restaurant is minimalistic and sleek with artsy vibes. It is on the first floor of the Walker Hotel so it’s easier to enter via the hotel entrance. Curious to check out their al la carte next time!!
