Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

What is the difference between a housekeeper and a house cleaner?

Although some house cleaning and housekeeping duties might overlap, a house cleaner is charged with the top-to-bottom cleaning of a home. House cleaner duties typically include basic and deep house cleaning, such as washing and sanitizing countertops, floors, tubs, toilets, kitchens and more.

Housekeepers or maids are hired to lightly clean and maintain certain aspects of the home. This might include dusting, washing dishes, changing sheets, doing some meal preparation and restocking the client’s groceries and personal care products.

It’s also worth noting that a housekeeper or maid is usually one individual employed to a home (sometimes hired as a live-in), while a house cleaner is oftentimes accompanied by a team of cleaners.

What should I ask a house cleaner or maid before hiring them?

There are many questions to ask a cleaning service before you hire them to make sure they’re the right fit. These questions might include:

  • How much do you charge?
  • How do you set your prices -- per hour or per square foot? Or, do you charge a flat rate?
  • What is your past work experience? Can I see a list of references?
  • Are you accustomed to working with different home or apartment types and sizes?
  • Can you work with children or pets in the house?
  • What types of cleaning products do you use?
  • Do you bring your own cleaning supplies and products?
  • How often can you clean my home?
  • Is there anything you recommend I do (or don't do) to my home before you arrive?

How often should you have your house cleaned?

The frequency you should have your house cleaned depends on several factors, and the best professional house cleaner can give you a rough estimate of costs so you can budget how often you need someone to clean your home.

Daily house cleaning may be necessary if you have a home with a large number of bedrooms with young children and kids, although other homeowners may benefit from weekly house cleaning. A weekly cleaner can clean the bathroom, kitchen, do laundry, vacuum and mop. An occasional deep house cleaning is most beneficial for people who have recently renovated a home or are looking to do a spring clean.

I had them come over to clean my apartment, and loved their services! I had a hard time finding a reliable service in my area that could accommodate my requests for using organic cleaners. The maid brought organic cleaners, and completely worked around me. The maid was extremely friendly and a great cleaner. She did a wonderful job cleaning my home. They are great, and I will be calling them again!

I have a newborn at home and was looking for a cleaning service that would be able to assist me in cleaning as I get used to my new normal and also use products that were safe for my child to be around. Checklist maids fit my criteria exactly. They were extremely responsive, with amazing customer service. It was an ease of a process from the scheduling of the appointment to the end. I’m so pleased with their work that I’ve signed up for their service monthly. Thanks so much, checklist maids!

Had an emergency situation when our usual cleaning help couldn't come, and the house was really messy (more than the usual :). I sent out requests to several cleaning services in my area - Today's Maid got back quickly and organized the details in a quick efficient manner. I totally did not expect that they would come that fast. The maid showed up on time and did a fabulous job, and she was really nice and friendly. I would definitely recommend and use them again in the future.

I have stressed for the last couple years to find the right person or organization to address our cleaning needs & I’m happy that I don’t need to look any further. Checklist Maids is the perfect combination of professionalism & organization with personable quality services. Christine has been responsive, accommodating and gone out of her way to make me comfortable. Our house cleaner was punctual, efficient and friendly. The process was clear, we walked through every room and discussed what she’d be doing and I was able to highlight the items to give special attention. When she was done we did the same walk through. The close out process eliminated any awkwardness as Checklist Maids required each item was reviewed & checked off the list, so my cleaner was expecting me to check her work. She did a fantastic job & she took pride in her work — we highly recommend Checklist Maids services!

A great service from Michael and his maid, Mary. I explained a few areas that I would've liked to have been better-cleaned and he was very apologetic and tried his very best (successfully) to make it right. I will definitely be using his services again. Also, a true gentleman and very professional, and timely.

After reading about emaids cleaning service online I decided to give them a try. I have used a few different house cleaning services over the past few years, but this home cleaning provider did the best cleaning of all. Just had my first housecleaning with them, booked a basic home cleaning service with one of their maids. I called their office number last minute and was able to schedule an appointment for the next day with one cleaner for 3 hours. She was very friendly, kind and did absolutely incredible job. Very thorough, efficient and detail oriented. When she left my apartment was smelling fresh, spotless and neat. Truly amazing house cleaning service, highly recommend to everyone.

The communication with Quicklyn was easy and convenient and they were very responsive and offered a reasonable price. I was able to get service at the day and time I needed. Unfortunately the cleaning was not good and I am now (re)cleaning the apartment after the maid left. The cleaning was very careless and I am finding floor sections that were never touched, surfaces that were not cleaned in the bathroom, the mirrors were not wiped down, and the couches not vacuumed. The kitchen floor was also not mopped. I am very disappointed that I now have to clean the apartment myself after hiring a professional.

Such a great experience! I've never used a cleaning service before, so I had little idea what to expect. they responded to my email inquiry almost instantly , the maid arrived a few minutes before I expected (which was great), and made quick friends with my cat. I had to leave for work, but she already started in by the time I was out the door. I returned home to a sparkling clean, delightful smelling apartment, the job was right on estimate, so no surprises there. Very well worth it!

I would give the responsiveness and professionalism of Quicklyn 5 stars. However, I gave 3 stars for the actual service. I specifically requested a top/experienced maid but was sent a brand new one. She did an ok job but there were areas she missed and seemed to have put in half the effort in some areas. I was given a discount and they offered to come back and clean. However, scheduling didn’t allow for it. I will give them another try next time.

"IMPRESSED" I have been alive long enough to remember when customer service was a real thing. It used to be professional and made you feel like a valued customer instead of just another pawn in the corporate machine. Now, almost wherever you go or whomever you call, you get treated as if your business is not important. Employees often look like they do not want to be where they are, and the whole experience as a consumer leaves me feeling frustrated. Well, customer service and satisfaction are back with Todays Maid! The first thing that struck me about Rose was how professional she was. From the moment she said hello, she looked presentable and ready for her job. And a good job she did, too. So far, I have only used Todays Maid once, but I am getting ready to book a second cleaning with Rose

I requested for the cleaning service to do a deep clean but after the lady left my apartment, I noticed she barely lifted a finger. # 1 - she cleaned my entire studio only using MY OWN windex. I was expecting her to bring her own natural cleaning supplies that smelled nice as initially discussed. A deep clean would be, in my eye, to get into every nook and cranny, especially since the service had a 3-hour minimum and my studio is under 500 square feet. The bathroom was essentially left untouched - very disappointed. I ended up cleaning the apartment myself which was a waste of money spent using this service. Sorry - two thumbs down. I told the lady that was cleaning my apartment that I would leave the space to not get in the way and instructed her to just close the door when she’s done as it auto-locks. I guess that may have been my mistake for not micromanaging? Not sure - but do not recommend. Especially since the person that contacted me stated multiple times that the lady he sent over is his top maid. Again, disappointed. Cannot recommend.
