Introduction: As a teacher with years of experience, I aim to provide a thorough understanding of piano technique, music theory, ear training, and sight reading to my students while constantly cultivating their individual passion and excitement about music. I maintain an upbeat, exuberant attitude coupled with patience and understanding I've acquired from working with children and adults of all ages, ranging from 4 to 66 years old. After receiving my Bachelor of Music at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, I spent a couple years back home in Portland, Oregon before traveling to Tokyo for nearly three years to teach and perform there. In addition to several years experience as a private instructor, here's a list of institutions where I've previously held a position as piano faculty: - Onset School of Music (Wakefield, MA) September 2013-September 2014 - Chelsea Community Schools (Chelsea, MA) September-December 2013 - Global Music Institute (New Delhi, India) January-April 2014 - Jacob's International Music School (Kamata, Tokyo, Japan) September 2016-March 2019 After these experiences and hundreds of private lessons, I have established my method for teaching the piano and am able to adapt to a variety of interests and styles depending on the student's personality. I'm happy to travel to the student's location, but depending on the distance and time I need to commute, I may charge an additional travel fee. Thank you for taking a moment to check out my Thumbtack profile, and I am looking forward to meeting and playing piano with you or your child!

Grant was my teacher earlier this year for about 12 classes. Even though my primary instrument is guitar, I got plenty of great advice. I was very satisfied right from the first class. I liked that his approach was more about phrasing, swing, time-feel, and making the most out of transcriptions, as opposed to straight-up theory based instruction. I loved the fact that he honed in on my weaknesses without me even mentioning them. Another thing that I really appreciated was that our line of communication was very clear right from the start. He would always get back to my queries via email. Apart from being a great teacher, Grant is also a very talented musician. This is of course very inspiring for any serious student. If at all I could make a complaint, I'd have to say that I wish the lessons were a bit longer. But then again, you always feel that way when you're enjoying the classes.

Grant was my piano teacher at Onset School of Music outside Boston. I should mention that I'm an adult (almost 60) learner and have been taking lessons there for around four years. Grant took the time to first learn my musical interests, assess my skills, and then tailor my sessions. He came prepared for every lesson, often bringing practice sheets focused on particular skills we were working on, e.g, blues progressions. And I couldn't help but notice how much the (much) younger set liked learning from Grant. coming out of the studio after a lesson, the kids were obviously excited by what they learned. And Grant took the time to discuss what they had done during the lesson, as well as practice objectives. Great music teacher. Highly recommend.

I met Grant when he visited Willowbrook Arts Camp in Tualatin, and subsequently employed him to teach piano and provide accompaniment for musical theatre performances for three summers. He was one of the best piano teachers we have ever had! Grant's enthusiasm just bubbles over as draws kids into the magic of music. He is a sensitive listener and strong supporter of each student’s creative inspiration and efforts. He is also a tremendously talented musician who can traverse genres with ease, although his personal focus is jazz. During the time he was teaching, afternoon jazz collaborations with other camp musicians and students became a staple. We were also treated to mini concerts whenever he had a rare pause in his lesson lineup. He was a highly popular and loved teacher and fellow staff member. We thoroughly appreciated all that Grant offered to the Willowbrook music program! Rebecca

Grant showed great patience with my instruction even when we took on a tough song to learn. He went out of his way to figure out a song I had been wanting to play for a long time.

Grant is a fantastically talented musician I have known since he was 14. I recommend him because he alone (of the multiple teachers I have had) explained the way rhythm works. I still use this info years later. And my NY City professional jazz musician son listened in to the lesson and said it was new to him and improved his playing.
