Fall 2022 Update
------------------------
I have run one of the most popular piano studios in the SF Bay Area for 5 years, with barely any turnover and a waitlist with dozens of students. In November 2022 I moved to Brooklyn NY, and for the first time in years I have availability for in-person lessons.
I will travel within 1-mile of my home (201 Eastern Parkway) to local homes to provide piano lessons of the highest quality. I specialize in helping beginners and intermediate level players develops skills quickly. I am an energetic and engaging teacher, with thousands of hours of teaching experience.
What makes my piano lessons special? We focus on learning pieces you love, drawing from popular music, jazz, and classical. Students are encouraged to develop their singing voice and ability to improvise. We develop a solid foundation of musicianship and music theory in a natural progression, that draws from my training at UC Berkeley and the Royal Academy of Music in London.

Reviews
“I've been a professional musician my entire adult life, and have taken countless lessons, and taught some music lessons as well–and Jaren's teaching is as inspired and good as I've seen. He's been teaching our 16 year old son piano and theory, and from the very first lesson he's been remarkably engaged and perceptive, meeting our boy where he's at, encouraging him and leading him deep into all facets of music. Our son has never had a teacher that's inspired him so. Jaren is a rare and fine talent!" - Mark M.
“I am so glad we found Jaren. He is a talented piano player, an excellent piano instructor. My son has attention deficit disorder. Every week Jaren comes prepared with new music, concepts, lessons for my son. He enjoys the songs that he assigns. It helps keep him motivated and interested. Jaren shares his learning experience and is very encouraging. My son learns a new concept in each lesson. I can already see a difference from his previous piano instructor.” - Cathy L.

About me
I have a strong classical background, drawn from training at UC Berkeley and the Royal Academy of Music – but I stand out as a teacher in the realms of contemporary songs, jazz, and improvisation. My students learn pieces that are meaningful to them, and through our musicianship work we develop skills that can be used for songwriting, performing in jazz ensembles, or developing fluency with playing piano and singing at the same time.
