Margaret did what she said she was going to do. She asked for ten days or more: she delivered the manuscript back to me in ten days. This is my first experience with fiction. From her ‘tracking corrections’ and commentaries I could see that she read every word—93,000! Yet, she treated the book as a whole: she understood the book and its intent. It set an important bound of trust between writer and editor: her commentaries were objective, yet, her suggestions were caring and doable. She spotted the things I had most difficult with and fixed it. For instance, verb tenses can throw off the reader. She suggested to keep it in the past—it works! She then explained the ‘market’ and the reason why I will probably have difficulties finding an agent. Nevertheless, she offered plausible suggestions on how I can get the book out there… Thank you Margaret! Gilberto Girardi

Syreeta created an executive resume for me. She made the process simple through her consultative approach. Syreeta is the type of person that makes you feel comfortable from the first time you speak to her. She's so pleasant, and has a unique ability to ask probing questions and understand exactly what needs to be conveyed in a resume. I highly recommend her, and would definitely work with her again in a different capacity if the need arises.

I thought JT was great to work with. He really took the time to speak with me and get my vision for where I wanted my content to go and say. If you are considering a content writer, I would highly recommend JT as he takes his time and gets it done right.

Max was a delight to work with. He tutored my son for 2 years when we were in Shanghai, China. Our son was in middle school at the time, (7th and 8th grade) and he needed help in getting organized and concentrating on his school work. I interviewed Max and selected him because of his warmth and engaging personality. He is also a writer and, at the time, our son was really into drama and creative writing so we thought that would inspire him. Max was so patient with our son who, at times, could be exasperating. Max would just roll with it and find a way to re-engage him. I don't think our son would have done as well as he did in school if it weren't for Max. Our whole family loved seeing Max, including our housekeeper who got a kick out of talking with Max in Mandarin. We highly recommend Max! He was sensitive to our son's moods and figured out how to motivate him, he was always punctual and very reliable.

I can't recommend Charles highly enough. He is absolutely amazing as a person and as a professional. I was struggling so much with my resume before I met him and couldn't find good job. After a few meetings with him he was able to figure out what are my string sides are and put everything so beautifully together that when I read it I cried. Really. I didn't know that I am that great but everything he wrote was true. And as you can guess I found a job right away. I recommend him to all my friends and they all are happy with him and ALL got job quickly. I suspect that besides being a good writer he also brings good luck. I can't thank you enough, Charles!

I enjoy reading Dana's restaurant and event reviews at her Dana Licious website. She has a light-hearted and concise way of explaining things that really helped to convince me to try restaurants and other establishments that I wouldn't have known about. I look forward to reading any of her reviews and blogs. She's an excellent writer.

I found Amanda as a tutor on an online platform about a year ago and I needed help with my writing skills in school. I need essay writing help as well as general assignment support. Through working with Amanda my grade went up and I have become a much stronger reader and writer. (Her motto: "Every good writer is a voracious reader" is so true) I actually learned to love reading more after working with this tutor. Her rate was cheap enough too for my mom to be able afford lessons every week. I will be working with this tutor on my SAT prep this whole semester too and looking forward to it. Highly recommend.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.
