Tim was quick with his communication responses, came out to the house on time when he said he would be there, and did a terrific job scraping and painting porch rails and window trim. He was very professional, and kept things very clean as he was working. I was very satisfied with his work and would definitely use his services again!

I simply love the work that was done by Adam on my porch. He provided an estimate, came out and met with me and discussed possibilities. I find his pricing is aligned with the quality of work he does. Loved his mannerism, professionalism and his attention to details. When I came home and looked at the work, I was pleased and excited that I had hired the right person for the job. He answered all questions and did not try any of that high pressure salesmanship crap. He is an honest person doing exceptional work and I'll hire him again.

Christopher prepared a fair (and the best) quote for porch repair on our rental property. He did an Awesome job and showed up when he said he would be there. He was very personable with a great work ethic. We definitely will call on him again!

Lee and his team did a super job. They planted a 10 foot maple tree in our front yard, pruned all the trees in the back yard, did a major cleanup of an overrun evergreen, and cleaned all the pine needles off our porch roof. Hauled away everything too. Lee was very responsive, with great customer service. Did a seamless job with the DIG and city approvals for the tree planting. Will definitely use again!

This has been one of the best experiences I have had with a contractor. Mike was quick to respond. His price was very fair. He did an excellent job at repairing my front porch after someone crashed into it. He did come out to assess the job and give an estimate, and I had many contractors before that said they would come to look at the job and never respond or return . Then to make things even better, I had new carpet put in and was unable to move my doors due to the height of the carpet. I called and Mike came the very next day and fixed the problem. I will definitely call him again for future work in my home

Tyler snow plowed our driveway in the winter. His price was very competitive and it included shoveling our front sidewalk and porch. Tyler was extremely reliable. He always cleared our driveway early in the morning so we would be able to easily drive out as needed. The plow damaged a small area of our lawn, but Tyler reseeded it in the spring. He also gave us a large discount to perform spring cleanup and mulch our flower beds. His price beat the competition's prices by a large margin. We will definetly hire Tyler again. We recommend him highly.

I hired JAD Construction on Dec. 21, 2017, the men came to my home the next day at 9 am. I needed work done in my finished basement, floor tile, pedestal sink installed, baseboards and a front doorbell. I was highly impressed with their work and immediate availability. I will be proud to refer them to family and friends.

I had Mike replace my front porch railings with vinyl and he also wrapped my posts. I then hired him to update my kitchen. It turned out even better than I can imagine. Mike is a hard worker, puts in extra hours, and is very friendly. He even put my dogs out and visited with them when I was at work! Hall's remodeling is also very reasonably priced. I would highly recommend!! Mike always goes above and beyond!

Roof over bay window and front entrance/wraparound porch leaked in high wind rains. Repaired at least twice, still leaks. Tom and James are very pleasant young men who knew what they were going to do, explained what they were going to do, and questions were answered in simple terms and explanatory visuals making a clear, understandable picture. They cut no corners and went above and beyond to create a quality product and guarantee their work. Tom and James were personable, easygoing, respectful, informative, pleasant, and kept their word. They worked hard, adding the task of tarring our chimney to make sure no leaks would originate from that point (not part of the contract), and cleaned the yard pretty well considering the windy conditions we had the day they finished the job. Over the years it's been crazy hard to get construction/home improvement professionals to return calls let alone be able to rely on them for the long run. These guys not only responded but came over pretty quickly with the boss (Ryan, I think) who has a mobile office in his truck and created the estimate/contract, ready to sign, right in the driveway. Extremely rare to get such a quick response and contract on the spot. They were ready to work that same week. I highly recommend Two Thumbs Up Constructions and look forward to working with them again.

Had vinyl railings put on my porch. The work was done very well at a better price than Vinyl Outlet. its better to use a small company that concentrates on quality work rather than a bigger company's advertising

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
