Private Dance Lessons

  • Serves Floral Park, NY
Yamilex T. says, "I’ve had the pleasure of training with Riaan in both traditional bachata and salsa, in both group class and private lesson settings. I’m currently at an intermediate level in bachata and a beginner in salsa. Riaan’s teaching style is detail oriented, fun, and incredibly clear. He’s excellent at breaking down movements and helping you understand not just how to do a step, but what it should feel like and which parts of the body are engaged. He uses creative analogies to help you grasp the intended feeling of a movement and if one analogy doesn’t quite click, he’s quick to come up with another that does. His feedback is always thoughtful and helpful. He encourages students to send videos of their homework and provides follow along videos to support proper technique during practice. With Riaan, I’ve worked on fundamentals, footwork, and partnerwork in bachata, and on basics, shines, and partnerwork in salsa. While I primarily train as a follow in both styles, I recently began learning to lead in Riaan’s class and have been getting extra support through private lessons. One game changing improvement I’ve made while training with Riaan is learning how to be more grounded in bachata. He showed me different techniques to focus on pressing into the floor to achieve that feeling. Another major shift came from working on avoiding stiffness in my upper body in both bachata and salsa. With Riaan’s guidance and targeted exercises on body opposition, I’ve made noticeable progress. Riaan does a great job of tailoring each lesson to my goals by asking ahead of time what I’d like to focus on. He creates a safe, encouraging, supportive, and fun environment in our one-on-one sessions. He’s also very efficient and communicative, always responding promptly, giving feedback on videos, sending reminders about homework, and checking in on my practice. After each session with Riaan, I feel energized and excited to apply what I’ve learned with more confidence at socials. I highly recommend training with Riaan if you want to improve your dancing and gain a deeper understanding of the movements you’re doing."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.
