I have thoroughly enjoyed by Spanish lessons with Gloria. She is well organised and structured in her approach to teaching which is so helpful especially when you are a beginner and trying to grasp the basics. Each lessons has been uniquely customized to my level and progress. Gloria is extremely patient and finds ways to keep the lessons fun and interesting while at the same time making them challenging enough to enable you to progress. Gloria is an excellent teacher and I cant recommend her enough!

I had felt very nervous just before i started to take English lessons from Raul. I had some anxiety and a negative thought about i will never learn English. After taking my first class, i changed my negative thought. I have been taking English class for 2 months and i feel the differences and improvements on my language skills. Raul is a perfect teacher. He is so professional and informed about how to teach. He makes me more courageous to learn English every day. He is also very patient, kind, friendly and understanding. He shares all his informations, sources and experiences about what you want to learn. Learning with him is a big joy. I feel not only happy but also very lucky to know him and to take class from him.

I was in NYC with my husband. While he was working, I took the opportunity to take Spanish lessons. My weakness is in conversation. I had (5) 1.5 hour lessons with Laura and it was great! She got down to business and really focused on the task at hand- she is flexible and accessible. if I could have taken more lessons, I would have! I look forward to working with her again on my next visit! I really appreciated her encouragement, more than anything! Cynthia N.

I am very excited to continue my lessons with Jorge. His online platform was an excellent support tool. He integrates Spanish speaking with reading materials. Although I consider myself to have a solid grasp of the basics of Spanish, I already picked up some new vocab during our trial lesson.

Had a great first meeting with Humberto where he explained the way he teaches and how our classes would proceed. It's a very interactional approach that incorporates things in the student's life. I'm very much looking forward to learning Spanish with his help.

Tiffany is an energetic teacher. She is very professional and knows how to tailor the lessons to your particular needs. She is responsive and punctual! My reading and pronunciation skills have improved greatly just after a month of lessons. The price for a lesson is very fair for the amount of information that you learn in a session. I recommend Tiffany highly to anyone who wants to learn Spanish.

I took private French lessons with Laurence for 6 months. Learning a new language can be intimidating, but only after a few sessions I was easily able hold a conversation about daily life. Towards the end of our sessions, I traveled to France and was delighted by how easily I was able to communicate with and understand native French speakers. With Laurence, you will not only learn a language but get a real-live immersion in European culture. I highly recommend not only her teaching skills, but also her kindness and her sense of humor.

I have been taking Spanish lessons with Juliana to improve my Spanish skills to prepare for research and travel in Spanish speaking countries. I had taken Spanish previously, but needed continued practice to review what I had learned before and to make new progress. Juliana has been able to tailor the classes to my particular needs and adapt to my personal strengths and weaknesses. In just a few months I have made noticeable progress with my Spanish communication skills and have achieved several of the goals that I had set out to accomplish. Juliana has been a pleasure to work with and makes our lessons challenging, yet enjoyable!

I love Dile hola a Lola! I stumbled upon their website several years ago while looking for a teacher to help me with Spanish for my job. These classes were superb. My teacher Alicia was fantastic, the best Spanish teacher I've ever had. Prices were very reasonable, communication with both Alicia and with Irene was always prompt and professional. What I appreciated most was that my teacher was UNBELIEVABLY FLEXIBLE with the schedule; my job had a punishing and variable schedule that made it necessary to change the day and time of class every single week. This was handled beautifully by my teacher. I assure you from experience that there is a vast difference between a teacher who knows how to teach Spanish versus someone who just knows how to speak Spanish. I always came to every class with a list of questions, and always came home with a list of answers. A bad teacher will simply tell you, "Because that's how you say it" (very unsatisfying). My Spanish teacher actually knew how the language was structured. I was so impressed that I took the classes continuously for three years. I just came back from a three month trip to Spain, where I put my new Spanish to the test. Dile hola a Lola made all the difference.

My niece was struggling with algebra so I suggested my sister to hire a tutor before she falls really behind. She found a tutor who was a retired teacher but she even seemed confused with the lessons. We then wound up finding Meghan through a friend and it really ended up being the best choice! She always came very prepared and was able to present the lesson to Tiffany in a way she could relate! She not only has caught up with her class but is consistently keeping her grades up!

I highly recommend Maria Betancourt to anyone, including adults and children, searching for an excellent private Spanish teacher or tutor. She is friendly, sensitive and engaging while staying on task. I am a health care provider needing to use Spanish in my work. Since I started working with Maria, I have made wonderful progress in conversation, grammar, vocabulary and writing. Her fees are very reasonable and she comes to my office for the lessons. I think she's a great find and I hope you do too!

Saul is a very talented and patient teacher. He takes his time getting to know what you want out of lessons, and is very flexible in his approach. When one way wasn't working, he found another. As someone who desperately wanted and needed to learn guitar, but sorely lacking in "natural ability", he was a perfect fit for me as a teacher. He brought me a long, LONG way in a short period of time. I highly recommend him!

Every session is fun, rigorous, and leaves me feeling like I've made progress even after just 90 minutes. Muchas gracias Felipe!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
