I didn't have an opportunity to use Jason's services, as the situation was resolved. However, we communicated on several occasions. He was attentive, responsive and more than fair with his pricing. I have included him in my arsenal of contractors and whenever the need arises, I plan to call Berry's Home Improvement.

These guys were amazing! Setting up the appointment was easy, the technician was extremely punctual and very knowledgable. I live in a 50 year old building so who knows what's behind the wall (I have the holes to prove it) - but he knew immediately and was able to get everything mounted exactly how I had pictured it. Will definitely be relying on these guys in the future!

Walter came in as a last minute save the day contractor. He is a general contractor licensed and insured and came to fix mistakes of another contractor and fix my faucets install. He ended up doing an amazing job and added a sealer to my carrera marble vanity. I am using him again for my next project. He does what he says he will, sticks to price and exceeds expectations. NICE GUY overall. Don't look further!

Greivin is a very reliable, honest and responsive contractor who did a great job at repainting our house. I offered him the job after he submitted the best bid among 4 contractors to paint my 1340 sq feet house in Hoboken. My walls were painted in dark colors with different rooms having different colors and we were shifting to all white - he did a great job that needed four coats and also agreed to repair our wooden floor in a small corner for no extra cost. He has done a great and timely job - in a condo building, he did the job with no disturbance to neighbors. Highly recommended.

My heat was not working properly. I had called 5 contractors before contacting Matt and all said my job was not important enough to squeeze me in anytime soon. Matt drove over an hour and a half getting to my house at 9:30PM to complete this job. I will certainly be hiring him again. Very professional and very knowledgeable! Thank you!

Jaime was punctual both when he came to estimate and when he returned to complete the job. He gave a reasonable quote and stuck to it, even after he was asked to do a few extra tasks. He expertly trimmed and secured a large area of 40Ft tall bamboo and then also did a spring cleanup, trimmed hedges and cleaned all of the debris away. Since he had to go through the house to get all of the material out he was very careful to clean his shoes each time he walked through and not to hit anything in the house, or doors, hallways or walls on his way out of the building. This care was greatly appreciated by this homeowner. I would not hestitate to use his services again.

My experience with contractors, including this company, is that you have to have patience. When a job has multiple areas of concentration (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc.), there may be different people doing each service; which means that everything is dependent upon each person doing their service in a timely manner, otherwise possible delays. Also, most contractors have multiple job sites where their people are rotated where needed. Since no one can predict a problem will occur, this also causes delays in getting a project completed. All of this is the nature of the job. As I mentioned before, try to have patience. Renovation projects can be frustrating and sometimes upsetting; but if everything is done correctly with minimal errors, the most important thing is that you are happy with the skills provided and the quality of the work completed.

Fabian did a great job. He responded very quickly to my questions and was readily available to answer questions. I needed to replace old outlets as well as install new outlets, dimmers and switches for the kitchen and bathroom before rhe Some of the boxes were old and needed to be moved or replaced for the install of new cabinets. He seamlessly made the changes and advised on how the outlets would appear once the backsplash was in. He had cost effective fixes to problems with the old boxes which i had chosen not to replace completely. He was also able to fix some recessed lights that had been sloppily installed by a previous contractor. He was knowledgeable and understood his trade as well as being honest about what i needed to do to have my outlets upgraded. I will be asking him back to complete the electric install of the appliances once the cabinets are in as well.

The job could not have gone more perfect. My contractor cancelled last minute for a job that needed to be done before Christmas as it was a gift. I hired Al over the phone as I was desperate and he came over right away. I was extremely nervous and worried he may try and over charge due to the circumstances and my need for immediate assistance. He had no reviews for me to read and I have had a few bad experiences with contractors in the past. Al was polite, clean, neat and treated my home as if it was his own sweeping and vacuuming as he went along. I was only planning on having him do the hard labor and I was going to finish the rest on my own. Al was a very pleasant find and I will be referring him to anyone I know who needs a contractor. He did not over charge and went above and beyond to help finish the entire job for me.

We hired John to put in recessed lighting and change some older outlets in our new home. His work was perfect, his work ethic inspiring. Not only did he install the lights, he patched and sanded everything he had to cut into to get light boxes and dimmers in. His patching and sanding was so good that the end product looks like no one touched it! In addition, John realized AFTER we hired him that our ceiling was plaster not sheetrock. Like a craft master, John cut perfectly into the plaster without even a chip. Another contractor who was working concurrently on windows even commented that he never saw anyone cut into plaster as clean a John. I worked from home one day that his team was in my house and i was blown away with how hard this man works. He also hooked it up and got rid of every mismatched outlet in my house w pleasure without having to ask. A week later we noticed a glitch in one of the switches and John was over in ten minutes to take a look. He also offered incredible guidance for the many types of light trims and helped me achieve the effect I wanted. I will hire John for two or three subsequent projects in the very near future. And last, but not least, the guys he brings in to help are Awesome, trustworthy, and great people. In short, John is he man and his work is perfect. Looking forward to having him do my entire house!

Our wood pergola had collasped on one side in our back yard. We had a plan a large outdoor party for around 100 people and needed the perguola to be repaired quickly. We called Molina's Construction corp and they showed up two hours later to assess the damage. The following day they were onsite and started the repair. They finished the job in three days and it looks great. We really appreciate the responsiveness and craftmanship Molina's Construction provided and would use them again in the future.

While we have had good experiences with other contractors in the past, we could not have imagined a better experience than working with Joe/JVAS and certainly will not be using anyone else but them in the future. Just to tick off a couple of important points for us: Joe and his team were professional and easy to work with in every possible way, all our questions and concerns were answered and addressed, and each of our projects were completed on time, within budget and without any surprises. We would highly recommend Joe/JVAS!

I would like to highly recommend the general contractor who handled my townhouse’s third remodeling and renovation project, Mr. Mario Bissessar, owner and principal of City Line Interiors, Inc. The job project went extremely smoothly and was completed in a highly professional, efficient manner; I am very pleased with both the process and the beautiful results. The project was multi-faceted, complicated -as any remodeling entails- including a lot of details, involving multiple building sectors such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, windows, tiling and paintings, metal work, having to respect landmark rules and blending with the existing structure. The crew led by Mario was very cohesive, punctual, talented, productive, flexible and friendly. His team is fluent in English (with a variety of charming Caribbean accents). Mario is very responsive, an excellent communicator and a great team leader. He was there every day, not only overseeing the work but very much hands-on, with precious skills, including carpentry. Mario also contributed great design ideas and judicious trouble-shooting solutions. Of course, I made several last minute changes or additions, which inflated the original budget but the corresponding charges were well itemized, justified and very reasonable. The payment schedule was without surprises and always well timed. It does not hurt that Mario is also an IT wizard…. All his subcontractors (electricity, plumbing, HVAC and metal work) were fantastic: they delivered diligently on the promised dates. It makes a big difference when subcontractors are well coordinated; they obviously knew and respected each other well, and were happy to work with Mario Bissessar.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
