By the time I found Dan on Thumbtack, I had been working on the GMAT for 1.5 years. I had taken a prep course and used a tutor from the prep course and couldn't improve my practice or official scores beyond the 600-640 range. Further I felt like I had wasted money and time learning "how to approach" the exam instead of learning the content needed to be proficient and able to beat it. Dan was extraordinarily patient and understanding of my frustrations and desire to achieve a 700+ score. From the start, we went back to the basics and corrected several bad habits and dug into content gaps I had in both the quant and verbal sections. Dan was incredibly flexible with hours and locations and made himself available on short notice when I had a few scheduling conflicts and urgent questions. Most importantly, Dan took a personalized approach to our tutoring sessions. He commiserated with me in moments of discouragement and cheered me on when I felt like quitting. I unequivocally recommend Dan to anyone who has tried and failed at the GMAT and is looking at a final short or attempt. He is worth his rate and adds value in more ways than I could have ever received from the prep course and their tutors.

I hired Jeremy to tutor me in the ACT. I contacted him planning for to get at least a 30 on the ACT. I am now aiming for a 34 on my next ACT due to Jeremy's tutoring. He has been exceeding my expectations in the way he deconstructs the test and makes doing well on it so much easier. In addition, he serves as my college adviser, and I have finally been given some good direction in the complex college process. Right now, I am looking into high level schools like multiple Ivy League schools, WashU in St. Louis, Vanderbilt, Tufts, and Bucknell. Also, he is very flexible with scheduling and very personal with students and family. Highly recommended!

Was looking for a GRE tutor last minute before my test. Kamil was extremely responsive and communicative over email and text and even did a trial 30 minute tutoring session free of charge so I could see if our teaching/learning styles matched up. He was very intelligent and extremely professional.

Terrific Tutor! Sasha is very patient and always willing to explain things in multiple times, using many different examples. My understanding of college level Physics improved within a few sessions. I have been with Sasha for over a year now at the collegiate level, and I would not look for another tutor.

Dr Fikar has been an invaluable resource for our family of five children. Four out of five have already utilized his services, with tremendous success. Each of our kids are unique in their level of ability and Dr Fikar was able to have an impact on each one. We started out using a free Class offered by the school, and then gradually upgraded to tutors who, while very smart and nice, were unable to give us the dramatic score increases we needed. Until we began working with Dr Fikar, we didn't realize how much potential our children had. The money we have spent on tutoring for our children has been one of the best investments of time and money we have ever made, as his services have allowed our children to gain admission into some of the most elite universities in the country, and we are now confident that their financial futures will be secure. We cannot wait to begin sending our fifth child to him.

I struggle with applications of mathematics in the sciences. Physics and chemistry to be specific. So I knew I needed a tutor for my intermediate chemistry course. Aaron made chemistry make sense! He is patient and knowledgeable and has an ability to explain mathematical concepts in a way that really helped me LEARN the material, not just memorize things. For me, having Aaron as a tutor made the difference that I needed as he fundamentally understands chemistry and can explain it in ways that I am capable or understanding. He helped with some of my lab work and helped me understand how what was written on the paper correlated to our procedures. I would absolutely recommend Aaron as a tutor to anyone experiencing similar problems, or even just to anyone that wants a tutor that explains things at YOUR level, because he is very capable of doing that. He has a very positive attitude and a charming personality which made the learning process so much easier! He is one of my new favorite people!

Odyssey Test Prep was by far the best decision I made for getting ready for the LSAT. The tutors this company has on staff are top notch and know what their doing. I came to Odyssey with a 150 LSAT score and my score increased 20 points to a 170 within the time that I worked with them which is something that I wouldn't have been able to do on my own. So if you're looking to increase you're LSAT score go with Odyssey it will be the best move you can make.

Best Decision You Can Make for Math! There's a reason why Manny is one of the top tutors on WyzAnt... He's fantastic. I contacted him two weeks prior to taking the GMAT and after having him tutor me for 30+ hrs. I understand math better than I ever have in my 26 years. Manny's approach is what makes him an excellent tutor. First of all he's genius when it comes to the material, but his unique ability to convey abstract concepts to someone who perceives herself as quantitatively challenged is truly a gift to anyone who has him as a tutor. He has some great tricks that are very intuitive, so knowledge will come naturally to you on test day; many tutors will just have you memorize dozens of formulas that are easy to confuse or forgot, but fortunately Manny does not believe in that methodology. Manny is unbelievably patient, will be one of your best advocates, and will work with your scheduling constraints. He truly wants his students to succeed, and I am so happy that I found him. My 16 year old sister is struggling with Calculus at the moment and after hearing me go on and on about how great Manny is, she's going to start tutoring with him too. Book him ASAP. You'll be so happy you did! Ali

I would like to highly recommend Dr. Howard Siegerman as a tutor of both math and chemistry. He tutored by son Tom when he was taking a difficult series of math courses in middle school and high school. With his encouragement and patience he was able to rebuild Tom's confidence. With this renewed confidence and additional practice, Tom's grades improved dramatically. Dr. Siegerman also mentored Tom in chemistry, providing real life experience to theoretical questions. Tom in now at New York University pursuing a degree in biochemistry.

I’ve had one session with Cheryl so far and she’s exceeded my expectations. She was so prepared for our session, and so easy to talk to that I knew I was going to set up future sessions even before our first session was over. I definitely have a renewed focus for my GRE studying thanks to Cheryl. Overall great tutor!

John definitely is a good tutor in the sense that he has smart strategies to help students improve. I think he was very resourceful and patient when I worked with him in trying to help me understand my mistakes. He wasn't stingy in terms of time either and certainly wanted me to succeed. Something I think John can improve on, however, is making the life of his students a tad easier. What I mean by that is that he sometimes makes working with him a bit of a challenge. Often he would respond to emails late or send graded material over days late. There were things that he said he would send over but it seems he has completely forgotten about it. I completely understand his other obligations in terms of family and work but it's a little disheartening to see that at a point he ceased sending over things he initially promised. Maybe he has a lot of other obligations on his schedule and I understand that, however, I wish he would make this more clear if it were the case. Anyway, if you need extra support with LSAT tutoring I would recommend him for his skills and strategies.

Glyn tutored my daughter for the SAT. She was able to improve her score by over 200 points! I couldn’t be happier. There is no doubt in my mind that her SAT score played a big role in her getting a partial scholarship to RIT. I would definitely recommend Glyn as an SAT tutor.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
