Marty has completed several projects for us in the past six years. Every one was expertly completed, on time, according to specifications. Marty's prices are very reasonable, his estimates accurate, and his workmanship excellent. He is exceptionally versatile. He can tackle almost anything, from carpentry to masonry, floor laying to plumbing, electrical to painting and pressure washing. Projects completed for us include the conversation of two bedrooms into a studio with kitchen, with a new vinyl floor and the addition of an outside/entry door; replace an existing single basin vanity with a two basin vanity, and new vinyl floor; remodeling our laundry room; pressure washing and painting the house exterior. Marty is an excellent, reliable and affordable all-rounder with a pleasant personality. We will request his services for any future project we might have. We recommend him highly. He is a jewel!

Absolutely delighted with our new hardwood floors! On a friend's recommendation, Daniel Lituma in Peekskill installed engineered hardwood on two levels and carpeting. As the contractor, he answered all of my questions and worked very carefully and cleanly. We are pleased with price, value and the results. He's a real craftsman. I highly recommend Daniel and his company... and will use for our next kitchen project!

Rome and his guys were great. We originally planned on only doing a couple things, and after seeing the quality of the work on stair repair and popcorn removal, we also had hardwood flooring installed, drywall replaced and tiling done. The work Johnny, Reuben, Jesus and the other guys did was beautiful and the prices Rome gave us were very reasonable. I would recommend him and his guys to anyone looking to get professional quality work done to their home.

We hired Marco to install tiles on our basement's floor, and paint the basement. We are very satisfied with his work, have already recommended him to our friends, and will gladly do so to others. Marco is reasonable, reliable, and professional. He takes great care in the work he performs and the final product exceeded our expectations. He will be the first person to go to for our future work.

Dan Williams handeled a major restoration of our home for us. This included new wood floors, refinished exisiting floors, painting the trim and walls in a 2800 square foot house and upgrading our kitchen. The project took about 7 weeks and was a bit over schedule but not due to Dan's organization skills. The quality of his work is outstanding and he has a fine sense of interior design which is a benefit to the homeowner. His subcontractors are wonderful and his due dates are always met. As an added benefit, Dan is an outstanding person with a great sense of humor and we would hired him for any projects we have in the future.

We had an amazing experience with Tony! After having issues with the last two contractors I have hired, I was hesitant to once again try and hire a new project out to an unknown contractor...But luckily Tony restored my faith in honest professional hardworking contractors who take pride in their work and their finished products. I was offered/accepted a job out of state and I hired Tony to refinish my basement, bathroom, install new upstairs railings/spindles and at the last second also had him refinish our hardwood floors so we can put our house on the market and to say we are happy would be an understatement. Tony went above and beyond to accommodate us from day one and he understood or time constraints and the issues of moving out state pose. So much so l, that when a miscommunication (100% my fault) arose, Tony came to my house on a Sunday morning to make sure I was happy. Name a contractor that would work a full Sunday because of a customers own misinterpretation? Well Tony did when he didn't have to just to make things right in my eyes. Tony was also spot on in all of his estimates and didn't suddenly start adding a $4 nail here or a $7 bolt here but rather stayed right on track the whole time! I would, and already have, recommend Tony for any job you may have. My only regret is that we didn't find Tony sooner! PS- I think the only ones that were happier with Tony being in the house doing the work were the dogs!

Dave did an awesome job on our front entrance! We needed a transition from the laminate floors to the stairs. He also added mouldings around the edges. He's very professional, arrives on time, neat, and communicates with you throughout the project. It was truly a pleasure doing business with him!

I hired Fortin & Miller Construction to install hardwood flooring in 3 separate rooms in my home. They removed the existing carpeting and assisted us in choosing the correct flooring to suit our needs. The floors came out fantastic and I would hire them again for the next home improvement job that comes up. They were efficient and professional. Highly recommended!

Juan (aka John) was great to work with. He re-sanded and refinished our existing floors and installed new hardwood flooring in our kitchen area. Juan is very thorough with his work. He carefully detailed how he was going to fix our transitions into our 3 bedrooms (there were sill? plate covers before with jagged openings / unfinished boards underneath) and how he would replace our tiles in our kitchen to match the hardwood floors throughout. Juan provides great customer service - it’s important to him that you are pleased with his work. We were very happy with our floors and it was a pleasure to work with Juan. Note: the flooring company operates as ‘American Floor Masters’ but is a sister company to (also doing business as) ‘Keen Improvements’ (in case your response is from them and not Keen - know they are the same).

Tom has done many jobs at our home in Carmel, NY, installed a two layer deck , installed 4 sliding galss doors which opened out to the new deck, riped up old style slate floors in the kitchen and installed new ones, repaired the ceiling in our living room(house was built in 55 so its this ole house,LOL) and has always done a fime job. After all this work which was done since we moved in July of 2013 plus when we moved that day he also installed a wood fence around a large part of the back yard which he started the day we moved and finished within 2 days(210' of fence) so our 4 dogs would have a play/poop area. He works with you and comes up with some very good idea's on the jobs as well and his prices are fair, I would recomend Tom for any home remodeling /improvements. He will be doing our master bath floor soon as well.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
