Very easy to sign up for this service. A little pricy so we chose the basic level which gives you a tutor who is a college student. We anticipate this will be fine for our needs. Really liked that once we purchase hours we can let our other children use them as well.

By the time I found Dan on Thumbtack, I had been working on the GMAT for 1.5 years. I had taken a prep course and used a tutor from the prep course and couldn't improve my practice or official scores beyond the 600-640 range. Further I felt like I had wasted money and time learning "how to approach" the exam instead of learning the content needed to be proficient and able to beat it. Dan was extraordinarily patient and understanding of my frustrations and desire to achieve a 700+ score. From the start, we went back to the basics and corrected several bad habits and dug into content gaps I had in both the quant and verbal sections. Dan was incredibly flexible with hours and locations and made himself available on short notice when I had a few scheduling conflicts and urgent questions. Most importantly, Dan took a personalized approach to our tutoring sessions. He commiserated with me in moments of discouragement and cheered me on when I felt like quitting. I unequivocally recommend Dan to anyone who has tried and failed at the GMAT and is looking at a final short or attempt. He is worth his rate and adds value in more ways than I could have ever received from the prep course and their tutors.

Jeremy is very knowledgable, professional education coach who has mastered his field of child tutoring. Aside from being a fine math tutor, he is also helping our child with organization skills. Even though he is new to us, I can say that he is dedicated and dependable. There are no screaming matches in the house regarding her math work and she has started enjoying math which is a big plus. I would highly recommend Jeremy without any reservations. Regarding his fees; you may find a range of tuition fees on thumbtack but essentially you get what you pay for. Having a professional business myself I can tell you that he is certainly worth your child's education and self esteem Dr. K

Kamil is an incredible tutor!! I could not have tackled the beast that is the LSAT without him. This was my second time taking the law school exam, and Kamil opened my eyes to creative, one-of-a-kind, and effective techniques that I had not learned previously from other tutors and prep classes. He helped me substantially improve my speed and tailored his teaching unique to my specific learning style. Kamil is extremely knowledgable and well-versed in all of the LSAT sections. He is accommodating, professional, kind, patient, trustworthy, and greatly passionte about seeing his students succeed. Kamil was an integal part of my exam preparation, and I could not have come this far without his guidance and support. Since I was taking the exam for a second time, I looked for a tutor who could help me break my old patterns and teach me new approaches. Kamil did just that! He was great at quickly recognizing the way that I learn and very effectively carried out his lessons. I would greatly recommend Kamil to students looking to see successful and quick results. Thank you, Kamil!!

James was the perfect fit for our teenager, for both ACT tutoring and college application/essay coaching. Not only did the ACT scores in question jump 5 points to a high score, but he had a pragmatic and helpful approach to the college process that was very well received. He had a positive outlook and cultivated confidence in our son, who had been a little nervous about the application process. James came to our house and was always polite, professional and on time. So far we've had all positive decisions from colleges and are so grateful!

I came to Dr Fikar as a senior, for help with my ACT. Having already worked with a few different tutors, and having only gone up by a couple of points, I was not optimistic that Dr Fikar would have anything new to add to what had already been done. We worked all of the Fall semester, and I took the ACT two more times. My final score was high enough to get me into one of my dream schools, Duke!! Dr Fikar took my ACT up a total of 8 points higher than what I had when we started. I'm so glad my parents made the investment, because it made all the difference for me. Thank you, Dr Fikar!

Mr. Parez was my tutor in high school for about a year to help me prepare for the SAT exam. The tutoring sessions were very convenient because they were done over Skype. Having the tutoring sessions done over Skype cut out time/money that would have been put into travel. Mr. Parez was always accommodating when it came to scheduling my tutoring sessions around my busy schedule. Mr. Parez had me take a preliminary SAT exam to see the areas of the exam I excelled in and which areas I struggled with. He helped me improve significantly in the areas I struggled in through various personalized lessons and homework assignments. Mr. Parez helped me to raise my score significantly. I believe that achieving a higher score on the SAT exam made me a stronger College applicant and helped me to get into 7 out of 7 Colleges that I applied to, including my top choice, of which I am now in attendance. I highly recommend Mr. Parez for any of you tutoring needs.

Best Decision You Can Make for Math! There's a reason why Manny is one of the top tutors on WyzAnt... He's fantastic. I contacted him two weeks prior to taking the GMAT and after having him tutor me for 30+ hrs. I understand math better than I ever have in my 26 years. Manny's approach is what makes him an excellent tutor. First of all he's genius when it comes to the material, but his unique ability to convey abstract concepts to someone who perceives herself as quantitatively challenged is truly a gift to anyone who has him as a tutor. He has some great tricks that are very intuitive, so knowledge will come naturally to you on test day; many tutors will just have you memorize dozens of formulas that are easy to confuse or forgot, but fortunately Manny does not believe in that methodology. Manny is unbelievably patient, will be one of your best advocates, and will work with your scheduling constraints. He truly wants his students to succeed, and I am so happy that I found him. My 16 year old sister is struggling with Calculus at the moment and after hearing me go on and on about how great Manny is, she's going to start tutoring with him too. Book him ASAP. You'll be so happy you did! Ali

I would like to highly recommend Dr. Howard Siegerman as a tutor of both math and chemistry. He tutored by son Tom when he was taking a difficult series of math courses in middle school and high school. With his encouragement and patience he was able to rebuild Tom's confidence. With this renewed confidence and additional practice, Tom's grades improved dramatically. Dr. Siegerman also mentored Tom in chemistry, providing real life experience to theoretical questions. Tom in now at New York University pursuing a degree in biochemistry.

I’ve had one session with Cheryl so far and she’s exceeded my expectations. She was so prepared for our session, and so easy to talk to that I knew I was going to set up future sessions even before our first session was over. I definitely have a renewed focus for my GRE studying thanks to Cheryl. Overall great tutor!

John definitely is a good tutor in the sense that he has smart strategies to help students improve. I think he was very resourceful and patient when I worked with him in trying to help me understand my mistakes. He wasn't stingy in terms of time either and certainly wanted me to succeed. Something I think John can improve on, however, is making the life of his students a tad easier. What I mean by that is that he sometimes makes working with him a bit of a challenge. Often he would respond to emails late or send graded material over days late. There were things that he said he would send over but it seems he has completely forgotten about it. I completely understand his other obligations in terms of family and work but it's a little disheartening to see that at a point he ceased sending over things he initially promised. Maybe he has a lot of other obligations on his schedule and I understand that, however, I wish he would make this more clear if it were the case. Anyway, if you need extra support with LSAT tutoring I would recommend him for his skills and strategies.

I hired Jon and his staff for Sat preparation for my daughter who was in 11th grade and they were exceptional. Not only did they raise my daughter's score by a whopping 630 points but helped with the entire college application process landing a 35 thousand dollar scholarship to NYU. I cannot praise them enough.

Glyn tutored my daughter for the SAT. She was able to improve her score by over 200 points! I couldn’t be happier. There is no doubt in my mind that her SAT score played a big role in her getting a partial scholarship to RIT. I would definitely recommend Glyn as an SAT tutor.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

    What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

    • English
    • Science understanding and reasoning
    • Math
    • Reading
    • Writing essay (optional)

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

How do you prepare for the ACT?

The ACT is a universally accepted college readiness exam. There are multiple ways to prepare for the exam. One-on-one ACT prep tutoring is one of the most effective ways for students to ready themselves for the test. A tutor who specializes in ACT prep will coach the student on the type of material they can expect while also working specifically with topics that are more challenging for that particular student. Group tutoring sessions are a more cost-effective way to reap the benefits of an ACT prep instructor; a suggestion is to gather a group of four friends or classmates to share the cost. Professional tutors often recommend that test prep begin approximately three months prior to the exam. Cramming — unfortunately — doesn’t provide the same score results as consistent study, test-related homework, and practice exams do. Weekly two-hour learning sessions are what many pro tutors suggest for their college exam prep students. For top test-taking performance, tutors usually provide work throughout the week and the weekly session is used to cement knowledge and address weak areas. Math is a hard topic for most students, so plan accordingly.
