Pete's service was excellent. From the first phone call, he was fair in his price and he called to confirm his appointment. He was on time. He explained his service and even gave me homeowners tips on how to maintain my carpet. Discovered he is a handy man and while he was repairing my carpet, he repaired 2 of my bedroom doorknobs. He will become my new handyman!!! Will definitely recommend him to my friends and neighbors!!!!

I recommend Global Housing for any type of renovation. They did a small half bath renovation and they expanded 4 closets for me. James Tapia is probably the one contractor that shows up on time and calls you if he's going to be late which was very refreshing. He is also very personable and has a good crew working for him. His pricing is fair. James probably prefers the bigger jobs but will accommodate the moderate ones as well.

Brian's restored our broken antique rocking chair to its original condition for less than half of his repair estimate. He also fixed a variety of small (yet annoying) issues in the apartment which other carpenters were unable to fix. Has enthusiam for his work, a wide range of skills and a gentle manner. There's no categorical rating that would be high enough to encapsulate the quality of his work, or the pleasure and ease of working with him.

(This message originally sent directly to Home Geeks): Dear Vince: I want to take this opportunity to compliment your wonderful crew on two jobs very well done. I really can't say enough good things about Denis Esposito and his partner, Mike (whose last name, regrettably, I didn't get). The interior work they did on my basement and kitchen, as well as the exterior work above my bay window all turned out beautifully. Their hard work (under some brutal weather conditions), attention to detail, and dedication to quality was nothing short of exceptional. I've never seen any workmen go so far above and beyond the call of duty as they did (particularly Denis). I hope you'll pass my thanks to Denis and Mike for their outstanding efforts. The repairs to my home that they completed far exceed "satisfactory." On that basis, I'd have no reservations in contacting Home Geeks for any future work to be done, or in recommending the company to anyone needing a high-quality contractor. Sincerely, Rick

I am very satisfied with all the work that Ozzie and his crew did. This was a 2 Room Apartment with a kitchen and Bath with electric and plumbing need. He replaced all the doors and sheetrock. Installed appliances with tile in kitchen. Installed a storm door and much more. He was very honest with his pricing and the work was excellent. The place looks great. My wife is very pleased with the whole job. He came on time every day and was very respectful at all times. I will always be using his services in any other construction that I may need. I give him 5 STARS +++++ Thank you Ozzie for you commitment to my project. Tony & Annette

We had a very good experience with Rick and Manuel and their team. Our project was a whole bath complete reno/remodel and a half bath retiling/new fixtures, with 2 sliding doors to replace the former doors. They were so accommodating and helped us achieve everything we were looking for (including switching out the doors which was probably a very tricky task given the layout of the rooms). Rick was realistic with a timeframe and also helped us get everything done before we needed it to be, even when I decided I wanted to change something last minute. Bottom line is that I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for projects big and small. If we ever decide to do more home improvements it will certainly be with them. Photos don't even begin to do it justice (sorry for low-res phone pics!).

Klarens was responsive and pleasant when booking the job. But his partner arrived instead of him to caulk the bathtub and kitchen. He did a sloppy job on the bathtub, leaving cracks and getting caulk on the tile (see photo). He put a huge amount of caulk around the counter in the kitchen. It looked so bad I asked him to remove it. I then exchanged messages with Klarens to have him come fix it, after I’d already paid. He scheduled a time, texted he was late, asked for alternate days, both of which I was available for, and then never followed thru to finish the job. So I am out the cost of the job and have crap around the bathtub and nothing in the kitchen. Disappointed does not express how let down I feel by KI Renovations. Other reviews were good but I recommend you Avoid.

We contracted with High Rise to undertake a kitchen and bathroom renovation project and we were very happy with the outcome of the project as Kiran was open to working within the parameters that we had set for the project. Unlike many other people who gave us quotes Kiran actually provided us a few alternatives which would help us keep the costs down while still getting a quality product. I think a contracting firm who can work with different types of clients and can provide a few different solutions is good to have on your side rather than someone who provides a single quote and is not very flexible. Personally Kiran's behavior is also something that we generally found appealing.

John was great - he tiles my mud room and 1/2 bath. He charged a very fair price for the quality of his work. Like any project, there were a few bumps along the way due to weather conditions, shipping delay of materials, etc, and John handled everything. He was also super responsive and easy to communicate with. I would highly recommend him for any renovation/home improvement job.

We have had major renovations to our kitchen and two bathrooms in the past by two of the top companies in the area. Due to recent water damage it was necessary to replace our kitchen floor. We decided to do porcelain tiles this time, instead of vinyl. Dynamic was right up there with the best. The work was done as cleanly as possible, with all attention to protecting our furniture and carpeting. The work was done professionally and the result is just about perfect. Moses and his crew were on time, cheerful and professional. The work was done on schedule, as promised, and at the promised price. I am pleased to recommend Dynamic King Home Improvement.

We used MK Improvements for 2 major projects in our pre-war apartment. He gut renovated both our kitchen and our bathroom. In addition, he designed and installed shelving and media storage in the living room. Matthew and his crew were professional, capable and approached all work with attention to detail. I would recommend MK Improvements without hesitation and would use them again in the future.

I hired New Space after interviewing 4 contractors and are very pleased I did. As a graphic designer, I'm very selective in picking the right company to renovate my new apartment in New York City, one who is design oriented and has excellent references. Their work is beautifully crafted with care and attention to detail. From complex plumbing work to detailed custom millwork, I was impressed with their professionalism and quality. I was very happy to work collaboratively with Alex, Tom, Frank, and their crew and look forward to working with them again on my design studio projects next year. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for professional fine quality renovation and a smooth construction process.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
