After years of devoting myself training in preparation for a professional career, I found myself without a “plan b” and unsure of how to make a living. I was so fortunate to connect with Judy. Judy invested her time and effort to help me collect all of my thoughts, discover and define my goals, and together we compiled an organized step-by-step plan that made the whole process super manageable and straightforward. I have never been so productive as I am now, after working with her, and it has carried into all areas of my life. I feel confident now that I can do anything I set my mind to, using the tools that Judy has so graciously provided me - I feel like I’m on a roll!

Working with Jeanine was an absolute pleasure and it is remarkable to see how much positive transformation she has facilitated in my personal and professional life in just 6 weeks. It is evident that coaching is Jeanine’s passion and she has an incredible gift. Her style is incredibly personalized, consultative, thoughtful, and inspiring, and I found myself empowered by her ability to offer a plethora of resources and guidance. Now that we have completed coaching, I am particularly grateful for Jeanine’s conscious efforts to serve as a teacher while giving me the tools to create change in a gradual, sustainable way. Through meditation, intention-setting, and reflection, Jeanine has enabled me to achieve heightened self awareness, feeling more centered, present, and confident. Not only did Jeanine help me accomplish every one of my goals that I set for coaching, but I am now pursuing my dream career and ready to continue to use the tools that she provided to continue to evolve my aspirations while savoring the journey along the way.

Laura is a very knowledgeable, caring, empathetic and insightful career professional. She picked up on my character and personality very quickly and made me feel very comfortable, bringing out the best of my potential. In two coaching sessions, Laura helped me prepare for an interview by providing a lot of valuable tips, drawing on her own experiences as a legal recruiter and boosting my confidence to succeed in an interview. I would highly recommend a coaching session with Laura, whether it would be one of a professional nature or personal.

There was an instant comfort I felt with Judy. I had never gone to therapy before and she put me at ease almost instantly. I started having sessions with her at a really difficult time in my professional career, and there were times when I thought I was doing everything I could, but she helped me realize there were more options and other avenues of achieving my goals that I hadn't even explored. Our sessions together really helped me through some very dark times in my life and when I couldn't afford therapy anymore after I lost my job and health insurance plan, she continued to send me text messages just to make sure I was doing ok. She is incredibly thoughtful and has given me valuable tools for handling anxiety and difficult work relationships.

Here are the features I appreciated the most while working with Josh for my first job search in NYC. 1) Professional advice based on his own experiences and research 2) Personal, and very thoughtful support throughout your job search process 3) Global perspective thanks to his international background Josh is a very strategic, optimistic, and kind person who will be on your side throughout your journey. He encourages and motivates you for numerous of new challenges and precious encounters. Above all, I really liked his approach where he listens to you carefully before he gives you specific and super useful advice. There is no right or wrong answer with each person's job search. But one thing I can tell everyone without any hesitation is, choose a mentor like Josh and he will light up your path. Because the path can be very long and it is not always very clear when you are looking to step-up in your career, and your life.

I entered counseling / coaching expecting some progress but Joanne Mackie has helped me become a whole person in ways I did not ever assume would be possible for me. I have been able to not only see my life better and differently, but feel it too. Developing methods of challenging and coping with my triggers has had a significant effect on my overall health and ability to simply be present and happy. She is also willing to work with you on a scale if you need it. If you are having trouble you are usually having trouble with money too and this has been a pretty great first step towards a better path.

At the age 47 and a little out of shape, I needed to get in top physical shape for a police academy. (In New Jersey the age limit for police officers is 35, but there is no age limit for correction and sheriffs dept)...... so I new if I wanted this job in corrections, I had to be ready, and if anybody has been to any police academy, you know it's a para military atmosphere. Screaming at you from day one, not caring about your feelings. Their only concerns is that you will be physically and mentally strong in law enforcement environment. The first Day I walked in, I talked to Bob about my mental and physical weaknesses, and he told me not to worry, and to listen to everything he had to say moving forward. I literally felt at ease from that moment on. Now it wasn't always easy, Bob pushed my mental and physical abilities beyond I thought I could ever reach, and after 6 months of running, sprinting,spinning,rowing,pull-ups, push-ups, weight training, jump roap, etc., I found myself in the best physical and mental shape of my life. Bob is more than just a trainer, he is a trainer, a life coach, a friend, (and even an enemy, lol when he had to be). I am proud to say that on July 12, 2016 I graduated as a New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission corrections officer, cycle 29 and have been working in the jail ever since, and I couldn't be happier about my new career in law enforcement, but most of all, I couldn't of been happier about the choice I made walking into Bob's studio, because I know I could have never done it on my own. Sometimes in life we need a little help to get to the next level, and that's why I made the investment in myself to get to the next level with Bob Pelsang!!!!! Sincerely, S.C.O. T. Venezio

My experience with the Mcknight Coaching Lab was extremely satisfactory. David has helped me be more confident and assertive, not just in my career, but also in my personal life. He taught me the skills to go after the things I want in life. It was after he helped me revamp my resume that I got a call to interview for my last position. Even when I got discouraged while looking for an apartment, it was David who encouraged me and gave me the determination not to give up, and the next day I found one. David is able to give the needed encouragement and support, yet not get overly involved in your personal life. He is always extremely professional, while being warm and personable......David himself also has an impressive resume, being employed by fortune 500 companies, and educated by top universities...... Years later I decided to start my own company and I knew who to go to. Stefanie of Risk Productions & Media is a huge asset to have for your company or for your personal life. -MR

About

The therapy I practice looks at your situation from a systemic view, meaning we look at all the influencing factors to the concerns you bring to our sessions. We as humans do not live in a vacuum, and that should be considered in therapy. Family, friends, past relationships, and so much more play an integral part of who we are. I make sure the work we do is solely focused on these factors in order to help you obtain your desired goals.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a life coach?

A professional, accredited life coach works with people to help them make important changes in their life, either growing in their profession or changing gears in their personal lives. They help clients turn their dreams or wishes into realistic, attainable goals. They guide people through the process of making life changes by helping them evaluate the steps they must take to reach a particular goal, then help them decide how — and whether — to take those steps in the most efficient, effective and rewarding way possible. A life coach acts as a motivator, strategist and accountability partner. Unlike a therapist, a life coach doesn’t help solve problems from your past — they’re focused on helping you move forward with new ways of acting and thinking that will help you reach your goals. Some people specialize in particular types of life coaching, including life balancing coaches, small business coaches, executive coaches and personal finance coaches. Some meet clients in person, while others hold consultations over the phone.

Regardless of which type of life coach you’re interested in, make sure the person holds an International Coach Federation (ICF) credential. There are three tiers of credentials: Associate, Professional and Master, which require coaching experience ranging from 100 hours to 2,500 hours.

What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

  • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
  • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
  • Defining your career goals
  • Creating a plan for job searching
  • Improving networking strategies and skills
  • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
  • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
  • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

How much does a life coach cost?

A life coach helps clients set and reach professional and personal goals, develop positive habits, and deal with stress. Some people meet with a life coach once or twice, while others form an ongoing professional relationship, meeting regularly in person or on the phone. The average national cost to meet with a life coach ranges from $80 to $130 an hour. Some coaches offer per-session pricing, especially for one-time meetings; expect to pay an average of $100-$125. People who want to work with a coach over a period of time to explore life transitions, career growth or lifestyle changes may be able to get discounted pricing in a package. For example, three 60-minute sessions cost an average of $300, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $350, and four 60- to 90-minute sessions plus unlimited contact between sessions cost an average of $400. Some specific types of coaching, such as relationship or marriage coaching, cost more than standard life coaching. For instance, three 60-minute relationship coaching sessions cost an average of $500, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $550, and six 60- to 90-minute sessions cost an average of $650 when purchased as a package. Training and experience can also affect the cost of hiring a life coach. An Associate Certified Coach, who holds a certification that requires only 60 hours of training and 100 hours of coaching experience, will charge less than a Master Certified Coach, who typically has at least 200 hours of training and 2,500 hours of coaching experience.

Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

  • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
  • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
  • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
  • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
  • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
  • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
  • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

A career coach provides one-on-one sessions to help you reach your career goals or overcome any challenges you’re having in your career path. The cost to have career coaching can vary based on factors such as the number of sessions you purchase at one time and the experience and rates of your counselor. Career counselors are typically professionals who have earned at least a master’s degree in their field. Based on their academic background, supplemental certifications they have received, and any postdoctoral work they have done, their rates may vary. Typically career counselors offer reduced rates when you sign on for their services on an ongoing basis. A typical price range for career counseling services (nationally) could be $75-$150 per session. Remember to always ask if the career counselor offers a complimentary introductory session. You want to make sure the relationship will be the right personality and counseling style fit to help launch your confidence and upcoming career changes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
