Introduction
Even while getting my Bachelor and Master’s degrees at The Juilliard School, I knew that I wanted to explore more kinds of music. Strong fundamentals are necessary for every student, but from there every student should be able to explore the music that inspires THEM! I’ve spent over 13 years fusing my classical training with other genres: pop, rock, funk, EDM, folk, world, jazz, you name it. With my violin/cello duo, ARKAI, I’m on a mission to expand the possibilities of what a cello can do. I bring this forward-thinking vision of music to every lesson that I teach, encouraging students to explore their curiosities and passions while also laying rock-solid technical foundations that will serve them in any musical context.

My teenage son had an amazing time studying cello with Philip. The lessons were engaging and fun! It’s as good as it gets when it comes to on-line ( or in-person) music lessons! Philip is an amazing artist and human being! Thank you for sticking it out with us during those initial scary pandemic times!

Mr. S is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. He is very nice and very patient when I keep playing the wrong note, or can’t get a part right in my music. His encouragement is a huge part of why I have chosen to continue playing the cello. He is always making sure that I’m happy with what I’m playing and through him, I’ve been exposed to a lot of different music that I never thought I could be playing on a cello! Even when I was injured with a broken wrist, we were able to continue with my lessons because he was able to teach in a different way so that I could still learn stuff that was confusing to me and those skills are still with me today to help me in my lessons.

Our son has had a great experience learning the cello with Phillip. He has been learning not just how to play each song but what it takes to get better and every lesson has been positive.

Philip Sheegog is one of the most broadly experienced cellists I have ever had the fortune of working with. In addition to his background as the principle cellist of the Juilliard Orchestra (!!!!!) he has branched out from his immense talent for classical cello into every that genre that exists and some that don't yet - blues, rock, jazz, folk, fiddle, you name it! He's like the swiss army knife of cello! He approaches each of his students with great care and will do everything he can to ensure their success. I've never had a session with Philip where I didn't feel incredibly valued and respected as an artist, no matter how much I was struggling that day. Over the years, his friendly and encouraging feedback has helped me develop as a cellist and challenged my horizons so much. I'm comfortable doing styles now on the cello I would never have dreamed of doing before working with Philip. If you want a solid basis in cello, or want a experienced mentor to help you explore and master any contemporary style you can dream up, Phil Sheegog is your cello teacher!

Philip is a one-of-a-kind teacher. The lessons feel more like he's going along the journey with you, allowing YOU to explore and discover on your own, rather than dictating what to do. His rock solid technique is paired with a creativity that makes you want to push the boundaries yourself.
