Though we live in NY my husband and I got married in VT, about 4 hours from our home. We decided to hire Nick because he had the best and most enthusiastic presentation, was willing to work with us on pricing and willing to drive the distance, and because we know his family well. Not only did he make the long trip, but he brought Brianna, his incredibly talented daughter who sang live at our wedding. Nick sang at our wedding as well and he was fantastic! I can't say enough how absolutely amazing our wedding was because of him! I don't think my husband and I sat still for more than a minute! We danced ALL NIGHT!!! It was the most fun we've ever had! The music was perfect, we had given him a list with some songs and gave him liberty to fill in the blanks. I'm only sorry I missed hearing him singing while we were taking pictures but everyone raved about it. Brianna did an absolutely incredible job as well. I have been getting endless comments and compliments from every single guest about what a fantastic DJ we had and how amazing Brianna was. I'm so glad we were able to share her talent with our guests, she always brings me to tears with those pipes! He even custom recorded certain songs to be sung along to live, and it made all the difference in the world. I especially want to mention how much Nick had my back during the entire afternoon and night- and that really meant so much to me. As a bride the last thing I wanted was to have to deal with timing issues as they kept coming up, and having his support and guidance really kept everything in perfect time- every last detail from the songs played at certain times, the announcements, to providing the music for not just Brianna but my sisters live singing. Not only did Nick provide the music for our ceremony and reception, but he also video recorded every detail of the afternoon and evening, including the ceremony and reception. He was able to do all of this with just himself and his daughter! He usually has assistants with him but the distance and having an event the next afternoon made it impossible to have them there- though he honestly didn't need them at our wedding- he pulled every single moment and song off perfectly! His enthusiasm, which is what convinced us to book him in the first place, was there 200% throughout the entire night. He had the perfect amount of enthusiasm without being too crazy over-the-top cheesy, which was exactly what we wanted. He absolutely delivered- everything we expected and wanted times ten. I can't sing his praise enough- he made our day run smoothly and was constant support for us, which was above and beyond what we expected. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone and everyone for any event, especially weddings. He was simply phenomenal and made our day the best and most fun day EVER! I have to add as well- we've been to a handful of weddings this year (other than our own) and no other DJ even came close to giving the energy Nick had, and not one of them got the party going or kept it going like Nick did at our wedding- not to mention none of them came close to Nick's pricing- so our friends paid a lot more for a lot less. We still, 4 months later, get compliments and comments about how we had the best DJ, the best music, and the most fun wedding!

I wanted to write a quick review of the Alan Louis Band. I was in the market for my wedding and saw these guys play. They were extremely good, Alan was very professional. I didn't book with Alan, because we went with a family friend. It was a very tough decision, but I would book them in the future!

The quartet we hired from Consonance was absolutely amazing - even our photographer's husband commented that it was some of the best wedding music he's ever heard. I was so impressed by them. Vasily was prompt with correspondence and made everything so easy. The music was the highlight of our ceremony!

Spencer and Sequoia brought the soundtrack to our wedding. Seeing and hearing them play live for our reception was a treat for our guests and one the highlights of the night. Their music is beautiful, modern, unique and leaves everyone wanting to hear more. We didn’t have to worry about any of their setup, they came with everything they needed and added zero stress or complications to our wedding planning. They are professional to work with and trustworthy. We loved to have one of their original songs as our first dance! They made our special day even more unforgettable. All we have to say is a big thank you for putting life into the music at our wedding. Levi & Leslie Ballard

I looooove Soulful Sounds! They are my favorite band. They played at my wedding in August 2015. I'm so glad I gave them a chance. Besides picking my dress they were the best decision for my wedding. People still talk about how great the band was. My only regret was that I didn't have them play the whole night. The guys are so prefessional and they dress for the job. I highly recommend them to everyone I know. I can't wait for my next event to have Soulful Sounds play. Keep up the good work guys. I feel like they get better every time I hear them. Love Vicky

The Jersey Surecats drove about 70 miles in a snow storm for my daughter's wedding. They provided light cocktail music. Then played a wide variety of toe tapping dance cover songs. They were the life of the party. In fact, several guests inquired about them so that they can hire them. They even learned several songs for the wedding. They were cooperative and went the extra mile for us.

My wedding was amazing thanks to Mich and the Skyline Drive Orchestra. When I first called Mitch, he made me feel like I was part of his family and had me so excited about my wedding. My husband asked only one thing from him, have everyone on the dance floor dancing all night and he made that wish come true!! When the wedding was over, all of our guests just raved about how amazing the band was and told us they wish they could continue to dance for hours after the wedding was over. We have been married for 6 months and I have guests still talking about the band. Thank you Mitch and the rest of the band for making my dream come true!!

BD Lenz was the absolute perfect wedding band for us. They were easy to work with, extremely accommodating, and just an unbelievable group of musicians. BD was easily reachable via phone/email leading up to the day, and was completely professional throughout. They really knew how to keep people up dancing all night and even allowed me to come up and play a song with my old band. BD stayed up and played some lead guitar, just such an awesome experience. Music is so important to my wife and I, and there's no better band we could think of to play on our day. Please, please, please hire this band. You won't be sorry!!!

Honestly can't say enough about how great these guys are. Peter Maness was super professional and easy to deal with and found the whole band to be extremely talented and very friendly :) most importantly for us though, they really played fun and energetic show that had all our guests up and dancing immediately. Everyone had a blast and are still telling me how much they enjoyed our band. Our wedding music was really important to us so I'm happy to say that these guys knocked it out of the park. Thanks a ton!! -Christi M, East Setauket, NY

Excellent people to deal with. Henry is reliable, honest and pleasant. The band is consistent of professional musicians who are knowledgeable of many kinds of music. They will play what you ask for in a blink of an eye, in most cases, and without notes. They were "instrumental" in the successful, very happy wedding night of our children. We highly recommend hiring them. Mr. and Mrs. D. Kaniel

I first heard Bria’s band at local coffee shop one weekend. I enjoyed them so much that I invited them to perform at my wedding reception! They were on point! They had everyone dancing...even my grandma. They were so easy to work with and very professional. They customized their set to fit what we requested. I couldn’t have asked for anything better. I would definitely recommend them to anyone !!!

Mr. Sarga is a gentleman, and dealing with him was a breeze from the beginning till the end. He was approachable, had a huge repertory of songs they could offer, and they gave our wedding in Brooklyn a really classy atmosphere. Their repertory doesn't only limit to Jazz, ask them and you'll be surprised. Having been a musician myself, I was looking for skill and taste. Jonathan's band has it, and their singer was amazing. She performed tune after tune, was versatile and had a silky voice perfect to warm up our Fall Wedding. I cannot recommend them enough, although for everyone who attended our wedding there is no need for recommendation as they all loved it. I hope I can catch them playing in the near future, to enjoy their work again!

Having a live music aspect to our wedding was something my husband and I prioritized during our wedding planning process. Our decision to use Set3 Jazz as the musicians for our ceremony and cocktail hour was perfect! Mitchell and his band were amazing performers and great to work with throughout the entire process. Mitchell worked with us to help us customize the music for the ceremony while also providing great suggestions for the evening. The guests loved this aspect of the wedding and we couldn’t be happier with our decision. Mitchell was very professional; the band arrived in advance for set-up, dressed perfectly and were so professional and quick to respond throughout the entire process. We couldn’t recommend them highly enough!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

  • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
  • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
  • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
