"Judy is an exceptional life coach. Too many in the coaching field couch and cover their work in hopes of not giving too much of their work away without compensation. Judy does not withhold her knowledge or expertise from those she serves. Her training, insight and experience is evident from the moment she begins engaging with you. Her listening skills are apparent. The questions she asks of you are structured to stimulate your thinking. Judy is a unique Life and Career coach. She belongs on your team as you transition and transform your own life and career objectives."

Tom has shown that he genuinely cares about how, when, and if I progress. He is invested in whether I actually achieve breakthroughs toward my personal success. Considering that my goals are so immense: to metamorphosize an ashamed, unhappy, ineffective, & lonely guy, with limited professional influence, into a proud, happy, effective, socially fulfilled, & profoundly influential version of myself, it would have been easy for him to give up on me. Even though I'm confident many life coaches in his position would have terminated our relationship months ago, dealing with such a high-maintenance client as myself - expressing to him hundreds of suggestions / criticisms / requests, expecting a personalized experience that caters to my individual needs, and offering frequent pessimism or guarded skepticism at best - he has been patient, flexible, & determined to support my progress. It has been several months since Tom started coaching me, and I have consciously delayed writing a review until I might have a sense not just that he cares and won't give up (after all, that's part of the job description), but that he will actually help me transform myself, in ways that countless others haven't. I have worked with therapist after therapist for years & years, undergone treatment with psychiatrists, hired dozens of countless project collaborators and personal assistants, and tried more times than I can remember to count on the support of family and friends in order to help me make the steady progress needed to break out of a deep debilitating personal rut that has lasted for decades. All of the above have been unsuccessful. I naturally wasn't expecting Tom to be any different. But I gave him a shot, deciding that I deserved a chance for renewed hope. I almost gave up on him and on myself, but he didn't give up on either. And finally, after months of 'blood, sweat, and tears,' I have come to believe there is hope at the end of the tunnel. I'm beginning to make steady transformative progress, and I'm looking forward to the journey that lies ahead. Prerequisites for success: I have to be patient, make a few reasonable leaps of faith, and make an investment in my future, emotionally and financially. I also have to be an active participant and be willing to gradually take the reins myself. I finally have to accept his limitations, while recognizing and counting on his strengths. His limitations: Tom is not a miracle worker, and in comparison to others I've worked with, he's not the most charismatic, inspiring, eloquent, forward, original, perceptive, intellectual, tech-savvy, exciting, or assertive. But his STRENGTHS far outweigh these limitations: He is persistent in his efforts. He is determined to be an ally on the road to victory, offering extra support when needed, never conceding defeat. He is compassionate, showing empathy for my experiences & struggles, frustrations and pain, & and my initial often-pessimistic attitude. He is patient, and will put in the time to understand, listen, and reevaluate / regroup when necessary. He is humble and modest, not expecting recognition, praise, notoriety, credit, or gratitude for going above and beyond. He is affordable, & ends up charging far less money than he could for his time, and far less than any of the other life coaches I considered, let alone being a mere fraction of the cost of a therapist or psychiatrist! He is respectful, as a friend would be, but sensitive & honors any boundaries I set. He never speaks down to me. He is honest, and when requested, very candid about what he thinks needs improvement, more, focus, or a shift in perception. He doesn’t rub me the wrong way as a salesman might, as though I’m a source of income, but always treats me like a person who deserves to achieve his dreams. He is passionate about helping people. He works very hard, often going above and beyond what others would do, putting his clients ahead of his personal life. He is fair, respects agreements, honors his word, readily forgives, and shows lenience. He is creative, willing to try to approach problems from new perspectives and angles. He is open-minded, willing to work with approaches and systems he’s unfamiliar with that I know are likely to be effective. He is trusting, and gives me the benefit of the doubt, while also helping me to become more accountable. He is reliable, and I have been able to count on him in ways I couldn’t count on therapists, employees, mentors, friends, & family. His system of "open access" helps me throughout the week, and this unique system of coaching has been the key to my success, helping me beat procrastination and not lose sight of my goals. He is flexible, & accommodates limitations, changes, and conflicts with my schedule, deficiencies in my attitude, and treats my perceived failures like learning opportunities to take a new, more promising approach. He is resilient, and puts up with much more than necessary for someone in his position, and never complained once to me about it. Finally, he is kind, complimentary, and friendly. He's like that 'conscience on your shoulder.' I would recommend him to anyone who is considering hiring a life coach, or to anyone who has unfulfilled dreams they know they deserve to and could achieve, but haven't. Thank you, Tom, for your efforts, and quality work :)

I am so grateful that this amazing healer was put in my path. In our few sessions, I have been given a sense of well-being using tools from Jacquie and her healing work with my spiritual team that I have been seeking for decades. Jacquie is very intuitive but it seemed that every time we worked together, the results were better and better. From our first session, I felt a sense of feeling lighter, more connected to my higher self and able to ask the questions and receive responses to continue our work. She is a healer. I am so impressed with her skill and dedication to me individually. I hope you will give yourself the gift of experiencing the healing Jacquie has to offer. You will be so glad you did.

We're off to a great start! I just signed on for a 3 month life coaching cycle with Jerry and am very pleased. I had my 1st coaching skype session earlier this week and gained much clarity and many useful takeaways both through our session and through the discovery questionnaire she gave me to do prior. Life is already feeling better. Jerry is very responsive, kind and professional!

I had a wonderful experience working Shayla Mcgrady as my exericse coach. She was motivated me to never give up and challenged me beyond my normal limits. I suprised myself how strong I was and my endurance. Without her encouragement and support, I don't know if I would be as healthy as I am today. She is very experienced and loves helping other people get healthy and fit and feel better about themselves. I would recommend her to anyone who is serious about becoming a healther person.

I have been working with Jeanine for life coaching. My experience with her has been nothing less than fantastic. She is definitely pushing me to live out my aspirations and work through what is holding me back. I find Jeanine to be very encouraging and supportive. There is lots of structure with personalized lessons and homework. I wouldn't be able to make these life changes without her. I truly think that she is one of a kind!

I had been thinking about taking up yoga both to build strength and to stretch (mostly to support my tennis game) and when a friend recommend I contact Alison, I now know it was meant to be! I had never practiced yoga before so was excited to work one on one with someone. From the start Alison personalized the sessions by talking about goals and expectations, and continues to do these check ins on a weekly basis. Over the course of our practice together, I've become more aware of what my body is capable of and of the mind/body connection which is a direct result of Alison understanding how to connect what I'm feeling to the right practice. Plus, there's been plenty of times I didn't think I'd be able to get into a pose and she has a way of giving direction and a gentle nudge that get's me there. Alison's Yoga coaching has been a great experience! I'm so happy to have found her and highly recommend working with her!

At the time I met Brent Piper, (a chance meeting), I was thinking about all of the things I needed to do on the last leg of my life. Trouble is I feel stuck and very tired. I was surprised his office is located in the Wall Street area. I was looking forward to getting some answers to my delema and what to do about it. After several meetings, telling him about my life, I was a little disappointed I was'nt told mm what to do. What I learned is that it is up to me to make choices and to act on them. Brent points out certain gestures and feelings that I am not aware of. He gets me to role play and also speak honestly to the people who have had a negative impact on me; that certain words or actions towards me have hindered me in life. Sometimes I feel like stopping the sessions for fear of revealing too much. But then, I feel there is more work to do. The real stuff is just beginning and Brent can help me the way a theater director helps an actor make a breakthrough. I look forward to our sessions.

Will not mince words. It's been an absolute privilege to both receive guidance myself from Henry, as well as experience him coaching other individuals and teams. Henry has a keen eye that cuts right through all the 'noise' to the bottom line. He is your most genuine cheerleader and the most unconditional supporter of all the things that you should be 'so proud of you', while at the same time his voice sharply synthesizes the discourse in a radically fresh and articulate take. When he speaks, you know you are in the presence of a wise, wise guide, but also one who has your genuine interest at stake, who will not give up on you until the message that you need to understand is received. In our work together, he supported me to uncover some fundamental blind spots, to reclaim seeing the full half of the glass, and opened up an entirely new perspective on seeing my strengths and accomplishments.

Rick Gioiello has an intuitive/innate sense to coaching among other talents, and knows where the work is needed. With upfront honesty and intense compassion , he gives advice/direction making one feel comfortable and allowing that vulnerable side to shine, I have personally felt I have learned something new after sessions with him, and as a result booked a role on a short film. He has also helped me with audition clips and is an awesome photographer . He takes his work seriously and passionately and it shows brilliantly. -Gina Rados-

Kevin Burns has a depth of knowledge, compassion and understanding that I haven’t seen and or experienced in a long time. He gave me lots of personal advice to help me get “unstuck” at a time I needed it most. With his advice I was able to turn things around. His words came from a deep place and has helped me “change course” in many areas of my life. He’s warm and very professional and has a good heart. I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking assistance. He’s an amazing ‘Life Coach’ ...Keith Gitens

James is incredible. He's a powerful force that'll challenge you (in a loving way) to move towards the life of your dreams. He's helped me make more money (a few hundred more a month) doing what I love. He's helped me see my worth and value myself more - and I've been extra proactive on growing my business. He's inspired me to take care of my body more, and because of that I feel healthier and stronger than I have in months. I highly recommend him as a Life Coach to anyone -- he'll get you where you want to go - and fast!

Carrie is everything you'd want in a work/life coach. She helped provide me the inward reflection, outward structure and accountability I needed to get to the next level. I'm finally doing the things I've been thinking/dreaming about doing for years. I really wish I worked with Carrie earlier and got this process going. I'd be much further along today than I am however I'm happy I got started, which is the problem for most of us. Carrie can help you get out of your own way and on the path to reaching and exceeding goals. I couldn't provide a strong recommendation.

I found Evan’s coaching service to be helpful in my job search. In my situation, I felt completely stuck. Evan helped get me "un-stuck" by asking all the right questions allowing me to come to the conclusion on my own time and in my own way. He watched me go through all the iterations of, "do I want this?" "is this right for me?" "whose interest am I serving here?" until I was finally able to conclude it was time to move on. When it came time to apply, I got excellent coaching on my resume and cover letter as well as my approach to the search. I even felt confident enough to cold-call some employers and eventually took a job with one of those who wasn't advertising an open position but just happened to be looking. Evan has an easy personal communication style. After the initial awkwardness that comes with bearing your fears to someone you barely know, he quickly became a trusted adviser. I have ADHD, and need structure and deadlines to keep me accountable. Sometimes, I bristle at this structure and deadlines and push back. But Evan never let me forget that I am ultimately holding myself accountable to myself. Setting deadlines and creating structure just became a part of our regular discussions. That was immensely helpful! Most importantly, Evan was able to meet me where I am mentally and emotionally until we could walk together toward my goals. You can probably tell that I'm a fan. I would recommend him to friends and colleagues especially those looking to make a change and want to put their best foot forward, be it personal or professionally.

I consider myself extremely lucky to have stumbled upon Kacey in my first experience with a life coach. Kacey is a truly outstanding motivator who is fiercely dedicated to her clients. She goes above and beyond to make sure I always feel supported, listens carefully, and accelerates my progress through relevant, insightful, and thought provoking questions and exercises. Seeing how incredibly invested Kacey is in my growth is a huge motivator to continue to be my best self, and she has consistently lead me to very tangible, life changing transformations.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a life coach?

A professional, accredited life coach works with people to help them make important changes in their life, either growing in their profession or changing gears in their personal lives. They help clients turn their dreams or wishes into realistic, attainable goals. They guide people through the process of making life changes by helping them evaluate the steps they must take to reach a particular goal, then help them decide how — and whether — to take those steps in the most efficient, effective and rewarding way possible. A life coach acts as a motivator, strategist and accountability partner. Unlike a therapist, a life coach doesn’t help solve problems from your past — they’re focused on helping you move forward with new ways of acting and thinking that will help you reach your goals. Some people specialize in particular types of life coaching, including life balancing coaches, small business coaches, executive coaches and personal finance coaches. Some meet clients in person, while others hold consultations over the phone.

Regardless of which type of life coach you’re interested in, make sure the person holds an International Coach Federation (ICF) credential. There are three tiers of credentials: Associate, Professional and Master, which require coaching experience ranging from 100 hours to 2,500 hours.

How much does a life coach cost?

A life coach helps clients set and reach professional and personal goals, develop positive habits, and deal with stress. Some people meet with a life coach once or twice, while others form an ongoing professional relationship, meeting regularly in person or on the phone. The average national cost to meet with a life coach ranges from $80 to $130 an hour. Some coaches offer per-session pricing, especially for one-time meetings; expect to pay an average of $100-$125. People who want to work with a coach over a period of time to explore life transitions, career growth or lifestyle changes may be able to get discounted pricing in a package. For example, three 60-minute sessions cost an average of $300, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $350, and four 60- to 90-minute sessions plus unlimited contact between sessions cost an average of $400. Some specific types of coaching, such as relationship or marriage coaching, cost more than standard life coaching. For instance, three 60-minute relationship coaching sessions cost an average of $500, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $550, and six 60- to 90-minute sessions cost an average of $650 when purchased as a package. Training and experience can also affect the cost of hiring a life coach. An Associate Certified Coach, who holds a certification that requires only 60 hours of training and 100 hours of coaching experience, will charge less than a Master Certified Coach, who typically has at least 200 hours of training and 2,500 hours of coaching experience.

Why get a life coach?

People of all ages and in all careers have called in a life coach. Life coaches are accredited professionals who can help you figure out the tangible changes you can make in your life to reach your goals; they can even help you turn your dreams into goals, if you’re not sure where to go next. A life coach can also help people find their purpose in life. Life coaching clients often have an idea of what they want to do, such as help people or work with animals, but don’t know how to turn that passion into a career. A life coach can help clients work through the options to find a clear path with concrete steps that lead to an attainable goal. A life coach can also help clients make a major career change, such as starting a new business. Life coaches can help clients develop better habits that will make them more successful, acting as an accountability partner. Life coaches also often guide their clients through major transitions in life, such as a career change or other stressful situations that are made easier with guidance from a neutral third party.
