I needed to move my smallish office from Soho further south, and wanted to find a reliable, honest and affordable moving co.. I've heard horror stories about NYC moving companies, so was very cautious and asked lots of questions prior to hiring someone (i suggest you do the same). In the end, after talking to and getting quotes from several companies, I decided to go with Simply Moving. They had the best rates, and Carlos patiently answered all of my questions and walked me through the process. The moving team was excellent as well. They arrived on time and ready to work. We only ran into one issue with a large piece of furniture that didn't fit in the elevator (my error, I thought it would) after a couple of tries. They ended up taking it down the stairs, and since taking anything down the stairs wasn't included in the contract, we reached an agreement, and they took care of it. At the new location, there were a couple of tight fits because the elevator was smaller, but they figured it out, and got everything upstairs with no damage, no complaints, and on schedule. Really an excellent job.

Just had an amazing move with Kobe and his team. They moved us from Brooklyn to Queens in record time. They packed everything perfectly and then placed them again in my new apartment very quickly. I am shocked how efficiently each of them was performing. They arrived earlier and they were cheaper than other moving companies. Highly recommended

I needed movers right away because the one I hired the day before flaked out on me. And everybody else I called didn't have any movers available till July 5. I guess the 4th is a big weekend for moving. Anyway the movers were nice and efficient. There were 3 of them. Forty-five minutes after they rang my doorbell all my stuff was at thrir truck. I couldnt ride on the truck with them so I took thd 7 express from Woodside to Flushing. I beat their truck to the storage facility by a good 10 minutes. Everything was done in exactly 2 hours. Who knew moving could be this easy.

I normally don't write reviews but I am inclined to write one due to exceptional service provided by Darius & Co. I am amazed at how easily and professionally the move was done, thanks to Darius. This Guy is a Superman and did most of the shift by himself. Darius arrived 45 mins earlier than scheduled time and patiently waited to start. The whole move was done in around 4 hours including 90 mins of travel time - all in all it was breeze of a move. Darius is always smiling and love his job which absorbs all the stress related with moving, which is not an easy proposition. I highly recommend his services - If you are looking for a move and are lucky that Darius provide service in your area - Look No Further!!

Upon submitting my request for an installer I received a message from Mr. Glass offering his services at a very reasonable rate. I contacted Mr. Glass by phone to discuss what I would actually like installed. He was very professional, knowledgeable and attentive in assisting me. I asked about where I can get the best rates on my wall mounts, to my surprise he went as far as to offer to order the items I needed for my television wall mounts. Before my appointment I reached out yet again to Mr. Glass regarding the maintenance of the wires after the install, I didn't want dangling wires. Mr. glass again offered to order the equipment needed to be brought on the day of my appointment. Both times the cost of the items he offered to order were amazingly reasonable. Mr. glass showed up promptly for our scheduled appointment. I had just moved in the day before and was not yet organized but Mr. Glass did not let this affect his work performance he kindly maneuvered stepping over/moving items so that he could complete the job. Considering his working conditions with my move he did a FANTASTIC job!!! I am 100% satisfied with my install (s). Thanks again Mr. Glass!

The treo men that movedme out of my apartment were on time for the Job and extremely professional. They worked quick with no breaks (just bathroom) and managed to get all if my furniture efficiently packed in my 5'x10' unit without having me have to upgrade my unit space. In the king run they saved me a lot of money and the rate per hour was very cheap (the best moving quote I've seen from several moving companies)since I provided my own truck. If I move again I eill certainly gave to reach out to Ron and his helpers again!!! Wonderful job!! I couldn't be more satisfied! Thanks again

These guys rock. They moved a gigantic painting across Brooklyn with about 2 hours notice. It definitely wasnt cheap, but I doubt anybody could have made it work better given my ridiculously short notice. They even gave me a discount due to 15 minutes' tardiness. What guys :)

On time, professional, polite. Excellent communication and the price I was given was fair and there were no hidden fees or charges. Brig told me that they would make this move easy for us and they did. Fredo and the moving team were efficient and organized and handled everything with care. I had guitars and amplifiers and they were safe with these guys. Highly recommended.

I presented GABA with a last minute need to move a heavy armoire upstairs. It had been left in the lobby by another mover. He went out of his way to accommodate me. He even tried to get a helper at 9pm. He took on the job before his other already scheduled morning appointment the next morning and got the job done even though his van wasn't working. He had no excuses and got the job done. I wasn't at the location for delivery and Gaba sent me a photo of the furniture prooerly placed. So thoughtful! I appreciate how helpful and reliable he was, and his fee was reasonable, too! You saved the day, Gaba. Thank you so much! I highly recommend GABA moving. Glenda

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
