We had a drainage leak on the exterior wall adjacent to our bathroom. There was no trace of leak inside the bathroom. We called Helio and he arrived promptly. He looked into all possibilities for a leak in the bathroom and identified that the leak was from toilet. He was so sure that the leak was in the wax ring in the base of the toilet and suggested to change it. He also taught us how to change it by our self. We changed the wax ring and there is no leak anymore. He didn't charge us anything for the visit or advice. Prior to Helio, we called the leading plumbing services and they wanted to tear up the flooring or interior/exterior walls just to identify the leak. Helio saved us a lot of $$ and relieved our worries for tearing up the walls. It only cost us $5 for replacing wax ring. We will definitely call Helio for any future work and strongly recommend him for anyone. He is very knowledgeable and friendly.

I hired Justin to help me with my laminate floor installation. He has been great to work with. He took time out of his own schedule to meet with me for the estimate and then actually went shopping with me for the laminate. He's helped come up with some creative solutions for trim and transitions.

Jeff recently completed a bathroom renovation in my lake cottage. The house was built in 1910 and it required Jeff to completely tear out the existing bathroom and do a complete remodel. Jeff did all of the work including the tear out, plumbing, electric, tiling, painting, etc. Jeff focuses on quality and detail which is extremely important especially when doing tile work. He also replaced doors in my home and was able to find solutions to unique door sizes and uneven floors. I would be happy to speak with anyone who is considering hiring Jeff for a project!

I have been working on a DIY project of building a sunroom on my house and getting towards the end of the project I wanted to hasten its completion by having someone hang and mud the drywall. That is where Thumbtack and Nulook Group came in; I posted my job on Thumbtack and Nulook Group was one of the contractors that responded. They called very quickly and we set up an appointment to take a look at the job. I explained what I needed to be done and the time frame that it needed to be done in; they returned a quote, again very quickly, which I accepted. Communication from start to finish was excellent; I knew when they were coming and how long everything would take. All went according to plan and their workmanship was excellent.

Over the course of 2 weeks i ripped up all of the carpet on my first floor. Underneath was the original "Rochester Hardwood Flooring" and i wanted to restore it. There were a lot of squeaky spots a couple old pet/urine stains. Tim and Tim Jr provided a very competitive quote, were flexible on scheduling, and provided advice on the flooring, heating vents, and cold air returns. They were both polite and a pleasure to work with. They added shims from the basement ceiling to fix the squeaks and pulled some magic on the stains. All around they made the experience as easy as possible. The job was completed quickly and i can see the pride they have in their work! The end result looks absolutely awesome!! (Dark Walnut Stain with White Baseboard/Shoe-molding) I am recommending them to any friend, family, or co-worker interested in flooring jobs (specifically hardwood floor refinishing).

I have had Mr. DeSantis remodel my basement and build the Alta-ment man cave that is world class work with a master bath that should be in a magazine, I have had him do work on my parents house rebuilding the front porch that was falling off the house, The way he re-engineered and built the foundation, Building it out of concrete making sure all the wood was away from the ground and solid concrete floor as part of the foundation to stop pest from getting under the porch and causing damage is out of control ! The first porch lasted 125 years, this one will last 3 or 400 years !!! Mr. DeSantis goes above and beyond the expected craftsmanship of all the work he has done for me and my family ! Old world craftsmanship ! Cares about what he's doing and it show's in all his work !!! He is the only contractor I will call to do any work that I need done !!!

Pat installed hardwood floors in our dining room and living room. He removed all the old carpeting, removed the trim, and then reinstalled the trim after the floors were done. He did an excellent job and always cleaned up after a day's work. He also replaced the drywall in the upstairs bathroom ceiling after our roof had leaked. Again, he did an excellent job.

I have had Thompson's Property Services do a couple of jobs for me. I had wood flooring put down on my family room and it looks gorgeous! Also, had a deck refurbished. Both jobs were done in a professional and timely manner. I have also referred Thompson's Property Services for kitchen counter and tile replacement. The outcome was outstanding! I would highly recommend Thompson's Property Services for all your home improvements.

I recently had Eric come to my house for an install of a living room and to re-sand and refinish my dining room, foyer, kitchen and front stair treads. From start to finish, I couldn't have asked for a more professional and understanding character. He stayed on schedule from start to finish and always kept me in the loop for what was going on. His prices are a little above the going rate, but, because of his knowledge of hardwood floors and superior craftsmanship, I can understand why. I would recommend him to all of my fellow colleagues and piers, and I couldn't have asked for a better job from start to finish. Not to mention, he was COMPLETLY dustless and also very neat.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

        • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
          • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
        • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
          • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
        • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
          • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
        • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
          • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
        • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
          • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
          • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
          • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
            • Includes removal of the dura rock.
        • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

        • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
          • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
        • 620 square feet of maple floor:
          • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
          • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
            • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
