Walter was able to accomplish both repairs in 1 hour! One was a plumbing issue, the other a towel bar repair. Walter was quick to spot the problem and provide the fix. His prices are reasonable and he knows his stuff. I would hire him again.

I was having a serious problem with a main sewer stoppage in my home causing sewage water to back up into my Basement on a Sunday. I put a request in through Thumbtack and Robert sent me a quote and called me back within minutes. He came within an hour and tackled the job right away. He cleared the blockage and stayed to make sure everything was running well. He stuck to his original quote even though the job was a little more difficult than he originally thought. I am the Owner of a Plumbing Company in Brooklyn, so I can appreciate the quality of the work!!

he got here fast, put up with my hysterically barking idiotic dog, tromped down the rickety spiral staircase in his socks and fixed the leak in about an hour. even went out to buy the part he needed. no complaints. easy and painless but slightly more expensive than i would have liked. one of my better plumbing experiences.

He arrived on time as scheduled and went straight to work immediately. He fixed a clogged drain for me but had to replace damaged pipes before he completed the job. He walked with me to the hardware store to ensure I purchased the right materials. He was very professional and appropriate at all times. He removed sliding shower doors and the frame, he cleaned up after he finished working and did not leave any mess. I would definitely recommend him for any plumbing and/or electrical job! His prices are also very competitive!

Arrived early; stayed beyond the expected work time to complete the job. His main objective proved to be quality of his work; time is secondary. As a rule owners of business do not get tipped (only employees get tipped). Owners work in anticipation of profits, whereas employees work in anticipation of wages. Tipping an owner is suppose to be an insult to the owner. But I don't adhere to that. If the man does an admirable job I express myself in a way that benefits his pockets as well as by words. He low-balls his rates; I would definitely pad the price he quotes. He very conscientious and thorough. He double-checks his work before he leaves. I can tell he leaves happy about the work he's done, as I am. His work is professional and reliable. He is a very personable individual. I enjoyed his visit and watching him work. What's more he involves you in his work, answering any questions you have, and takes you step-by-step through the process. He worked on a 30-year-old refrigerator and resolved major issues on it, ones the manufacturer did not dare to attempt. Need I say more? If you need a plumbing get this man; request Appliance Repair.

He reviewed my plumbing problem, quoted me a very reasonable, fair price that Roto Rooter wanted 3 times more for the same job. Ronnie fixed the problem completely & competently, he is professional, clean and stuck to his original price, even

Carlos was great. In the end, the leak I had was not plumbing related, but he helped me trace it to the source - a gap in the window frame of the shower. He did not charge me to diagnose the issue. I'm lucky I didn't plumbing work this time, but when I do, Carlos will be my first call.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
