Keith Burgess

This review is looooong overdue! Finally, I can sit down and write a very well thought out review. Keith and his wife were very professional and accommodating to our last minute modifications. Our wedding was on a farm in New Jersey and they traveled all the way from New York just to make our little dream come true. Keith was very responsive and communicative throughout the entire time leading to the big day and that was very much appreciated. When booking Keith you can expect a very open minister with mindful questions to make your wedding very personal and tailored to you. Thank you Keith for your work.

Pastor B. Allen

Working with Pastor Bryan was a wonderful experience. We were in search of a minister who could officiate our wedding with a focus on Christ, and he was very faithful in doing just that for us. Prior to the wedding we chose to sit with him for counseling which proved very beneficial, as he took much care to understand who we were as a couple and help us consider ways to have a fruitful marriage in the years to come. We would absolutely recommend Pastor Bryan to friends who may need a minister in the future.

Ross Decker Marriage Officiant

Let me tell you about Ross Decker. He is a professional marriage officiant and he felt like one of my closest friend's. We spoke by phone and by text since I work crazy hour's. But I kept him in the loop and even send him a link on how I would like my wedding. Since my bride to be kept changing her mind or keep adding additional items to the list on how to do a philippine wedding. He has done his research and we agreed on the right solution. Everything went according to plan even though I slowly turning into a nervous wreck. The wedding was a complete success. We were slightly off schedule but it work out fine. I am telling you, you won't be disappointed using his service for your wedding. Don't look at him as a Father, minister, pastor or a priest but as a friend!

Wedding Officiant Anthony

Anthony was an excellent communicator and responded to emails with updates and questions about readings and procession, etc. very quickly. Being from nearby, but out of state, and on a tricky work schedule, this is saying even more. Upon meeting for the first time (at our ceremony!), he was extremely warm with a noticeable positivity which is all I could have wanted. Every step of the way was handled professionally. My husband and I eloped to Central Park with just ourselves and our friend/photographer/witness, so our ceremony was very intimate and personal. I would highly recommend him to my friends and family and to all of you here as well. Beautiful and romantic experience, one happy bride! Cheers to you all out there, happy weddings!

Kevin Cook, Wedding Officiant

My husband and I had the most wonderful experience having Mr. Kevin Cook as our wedding officiant. With only 5 weeks to plan a Valentine's Day wedding, I used Thumbtack to find an officiant who would be available on short notice, as well as on such a special holiday. Mr. Cook was the perfect match for a wedding focused on our Christian faith. He is an absolute pro when it comes to wedding ceremonies, as he provided us with all the information necessary to customize a ceremony that was a tailored match to us as a couple. The entire process was much easier than either of us had anticipated. Our wedding was in reliable hands. Kevin gave a genuine and sincere feeling to the ceremony, yet with the ideal touch of joyful lightheartedness. We have received many compliments from our wedding guests on how much they adored our minister! I am so pleased to look back on my wedding day that was so peaceful and enjoyable, with much thanks to Kevin Cook. He truly cares about those whose weddings he takes part in, and no doubt we will be sending him Christmas cards for all the years to come!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.
