  • Piano and Trumpet Lessons by Joyce Toth

Over the years, I've gained a reputation as a teacher who goes the extra mile to work with students who have difficulties with their music studies for whatever reason. I don't cut off the lesson right in the middle of a teaching point, but will continue until the point has been covered. I am constantly providing specialized arrangements for my students, music that is not published, or is only published at an inappropriate level for the student requesting it. I try to teach students how to practice, and tell them that my goal is to help them improve their skills to the point that they don't need my help anymore. I tell people my job is making kids smile. However, it's just as likely that they'll make me smile.

My goal first and foremost is to make learning to play music FUN! Along with this, every student has their own set of goals and will be coming in with a given knowledge, or completely new to their instrument. I do whatever it takes to not only get them playing well in short time, but to also give them the tools to discover things on their own and make best use of their practice time. This often means using instruction books or written pieces, but also includes short exercises that I like to write out that address breathing/posture, rhythm and sense of time, technique, etc. I also like to give out a lot listening recommendations! (youtube links, album names). I first picked up an instrument at the age of 10, and it soon became my passion. Since earning a degree from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in 2008, I had the opportunity to perform with incredible musicians from all over the world. However, there are few things I enjoy more than getting back to fundamentals and talking shop, as well as seeing that same musical spark in others. Music is an endless pursuit. Each day offers challenges that are a little bit different from the last, and there is something very satisfying about finding little successes and accomplishments along the way.

One way is my teaching of technique. Playing the piano is a physical activity. Not many teachers can explain how to play in a coordinated way, either because they struggle themselves or because they have such a natural way of playing that they never had to figure it out. Early in my career I made every mistake that I could have before I met some wonderful teachers and spent a number of years relearning how to play. As a result, I can help my students work through most challenges that their music presents. Listening to my students play beautifully
