My wife and I just had our first Japanese lesson with Keiko - it was an amazing experience! Keiko is considerate, and patient. In addition to her commendable linguistic prowess, Keiko also possesses a great deal of insight regarding Japanese culture! I am looking forward to my future Japanese lessons with Keiko and would heartily recommended her to anyone who is serious about learning Japanese.

Sara is the best Spanish teacher you could ask for. I took only 17 lessons with Sara before spending over a month in Peru and I can tell you she is absolutely spectacular. I came into these lessons with no prior knowledge of Spanish and with only 17 lessons I am able to carry out intermediate conversations with native speakers. She provides you with more than enough material to understand both conversational and grammatical rules of Spanish. DO NOT CHEAT YOURSELF HIRE THE BEST. Also the prices she charge is far cheaper than the quality of education you will receive.

Gloria is an excellent teacher. She has a great approach to teaching a language that is patient, considered and is able to adapt the lessons to tailor to myself as a student. She is also particular good at prioritizing what is taught, so you are not slowed down by minutia which takes away the fun of learning a language.

I had felt very nervous just before i started to take English lessons from Raul. I had some anxiety and a negative thought about i will never learn English. After taking my first class, i changed my negative thought. I have been taking English class for 2 months and i feel the differences and improvements on my language skills. Raul is a perfect teacher. He is so professional and informed about how to teach. He makes me more courageous to learn English every day. He is also very patient, kind, friendly and understanding. He shares all his informations, sources and experiences about what you want to learn. Learning with him is a big joy. I am an American who has been taking French lessons from Ainna once per week for nearly two years. I didn’t know any French at all until I met my now girlfriend who was born and raised in France. I decided to take up lessons to learn how to speak with her family and I’ve made huge strides in the past 2 years. I now have a great framework of the language and can understand and speak in basic conversations. Ainna’s teaching method is very effective – she combines formal grammar and vocabulary training that has given me the ability to both write and speak properly. In addition, the lessons are very heavily focused on accent training. I have been told by French only speakers in France that I have a very good accent and that can be attributed to Ainna’s teaching – she has the unique ability to teach me how to hear, identify and create the sounds that it takes to speak French correctly. Words that I found nearly impossible to say 2 years ago now come out easily. That’s the result of Ainna’s step-by-step accent training and insistence on repetition until its right. She makes the lessons fun and she is extremely encouraging. It’s been very exciting to get a little bit better every week. I plan to continue with Ainna’s services indefinitely.

Laura is an excellent Spanish teacher. I highly recommend her to anyone who wants to learn the language. Her one on one approach makes learning easy and fun! I leave every session feeling like I have a better grasp on the language than I did the day before. She is a patient teacher and makes sure you master a group of words (especially verbs and the conjugations) before moving on. If you want to learn Spanish I would go to her.

Raffaella is a great Italian teacher. She is teaching my teen daughter who is a beginner and me (upper intermediate.) She's friendly and makes Italian enjoyable which is important with teens. I've worked with a lot of Italian instructors and she's definitely one of the best. After just two lessons, we've both learned a tremendous amount.

Ciao! My wife and I had the pleasure of taking beginner Italian lessons with Antonio. While my wife excels at picking up other languages quickly, I am the opposite. No matter. Antonio was accommodating to both our strengths and weaknesses and tailored the lessons so that we both got the most out of our time together. He is very kind and generous teacher. I would not hesitate recommending him to anyone looking to learn Italian. Buona fortuna!

I started taking Italian lessons with Gaetano to better communicate with my family in Italy who do not speak English. When I visited Italy this summer, they complimented me on my improvement and even said I speak like a native. Gaetano takes an approach that makes learning fun, and we became fast friends. I will definitely continue taking lessons in the future!

I love to learn new languages. So I decided to take French as my second language for my school, and quickly realized that I needed help. After going through 3 tutors, I found Miss. Raguthu. When I met her, she was an absolute delight. She sat down with me, explained and answered each and every question I had. She is knowledgeable and has a lot of patience. I was able to pick up my French class grades, from a 65 to a 98. My parents and my Teacher were extremely happy with my progress. I would highly recommend Miss. Meena to any one of my friends and family members. If you want to improve your grade or want to have a high grade, I would definitely choose Miss. Meena.

Mr. Connor has been working with my children the last two years. He is an amazing teacher who is very patient and kind to my children. He is teaching them Chinese, singing, drum and guitar. Unlike other teacher we had in the past, Mr. Connor incorporate games and songs into all his lessons which makes language learning much more interest. My children adores Mr. Connor and looking forward to work with him every time.

For the past few years, Danaya has helped me structure and edit various versions of my resume, CV and many cover letters. She is very thorough and patient, always willing to take the time to explain her suggestions for changes. If she is working on something for me and we aren't able to meet, she types up her notes and explanations. She has also translated a variety of documents for me - personal and official (English to Spanish and Spanish to English). She's a great translator because she can adapt the language so if doesn't sound "translated," but like it was originally written in English/Spanish. I will definitely keep working with Danaya!

The few lessons I had with Humberto were great! He was great at understanding my goals, gauging where I was with my comfort level, and finding an appropriate pace for me. He made the classes enjoyable and helpful all around, adding some music given my own interest in it.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
