I hired Skilled Service, Repair & Installation a few weeks ago, right before the New Year, and it was a very pleasant experience, from the introductory email, to the phone/text conversations, to the finalization of the job. One thing I really like about Joseph is, that he is really does seem like an honest business man. He must've mentioned to me two or three times not to ever feel shy about asking any questions at all and voicing my own opinion. As a homeowner, and not a professional in the construction business, it is very intimidating at times hiring contractors and letting them and their sub-contractors in the home while having to perform family-hood duties. I mean the household chores, the kids and their homework and their chores, etc, etc. I run a very busy household, Joseph's head had to be spinning, trying to stay focused on the work, hearing the noise and comotion. Who knows what he must've thought of my homelife, LOL, but like I said above, him and his helper were very pleasant and professional. They both have children themselves, and they both said it was nothing new to them. Even when Joseph came by for the estimate, my son and daughter would not leave my side, not even five minutes into estimate he had my kids giggling and smiling, I thought that was very sweet of him. So between the paint job and the electrical installation for the master bedroom and kids' room, the rooms came out absolutely wonderful. The accent walls in each room bounce the rest of the room right out at you. The lighting was beautifly done and there are more outlets and they are so easy to get to now, yay!!

Wow!! What a quality and professional job from Advantage Irrigation!! They quoted a price based on a picture I provided and honored the price when they came to do the work. The owner of the company came out personally to do the repair. He completed it in a timely manner and I am confident that his creative solution will permanently fix my issue. I would highly recommend Advantage Irrigation to others on ThumbTack looking for a hassle free and inexpensive option for sprinkler system maintenance.

Ozzy was great. He showed up on time and did a perfect job. He was all business and MOST IMPORTANTLY - he did not complain - which seems to be a common problem with contractors who want to get paid but don't want to do the work. I would hire him again.

I hired Guillermo to redo a brownstone back yard that looked like a desert and he turned it into a minor Garden of Eden. He is very patient and suggested installation of an irrigation hose so that I wouldn't have to worry about watering. His prices were reasonable. He came when he promised to come. And he used left-over flowers to beautifully dress up the front of my building. I recommend him heartily. He knows his stuff.

Installation of Lawn Sprinkler System. Gordon took the time and explained the complete installation process, and how the system and zones worked in the end. Work started and finished in the time frame I had expected. When they finished, walkway and driveway were cleaned, the grass areas were leveled, seeded and fertilized. Gordon and his team were very professional. I am extremely happy with the job they did, and with my irrigation system. GREAT JOB....

David of DIA Services was the first contractor to offer his services to me for my project. I am glad that I selected him. He was professional, courteous, friendly, and, quite simply, he did what he promised to do, when we agreed, and at a fair price. I am pleased to say that my deck is now more secure than it was before.

We had an excellent experience working with The Contractors Group on the repair of our existing retaining wall and the addition of a brand new patio, built-in grill and sitting wall. They worked hard, showed up every day early and stayed late to finish everything. They added insight on every step of the process, from the materials to the plantings. We could't be happier with the final results- it's even better than we imagined! I would highly recommend The Contractors Group for any of your outdoor work- you're getting a professional and detail-oriented team, who care deeply about making their clients happy!

I can't recommend Dan enough. I recently moved to my first home in Brooklyn with outdoor space and wanted help getting a garden up and running on my patio. After coming by for a consultation, Dan came back with plants, soil, and tools and taught me how to plant and care for everything. He also set up an irrigation system for the new plants and helped me install outdoor lighting. The patio and garden look fantastic thanks to Dan's help. I will definitely work with him again!

Rafael and his team were very professional, courteous, neat and extremely efficient. The quality of work is exceptional. I have worked with several contractors before and this was by far the best experience I have had in all areas mentioned. He completed the job ahead of schedule and within budget. The entire team took pride in their work and went above and beyond to make sure the job was done superbly without breaking the bank. I would be a pleasure to use this team again and I would highly recommend.

I was initially unsure of selecting Armored Gardens, as there were no reviews and frankly, I know nothing about irrigation systems. As it turned out Jay (Jamel) and his crew were terrific! Jay’s response time and willingness to do whatever was necessary to upgrade my over 30 year old system, was truly excellent. He took time to “hear” my concerns, was prompt, professional AND completed the job in the time projected! He went “the extra mile” to make sure everything he promised (and more) was perfect! I highly recommend Armored Gardens! Personal and professional care makes the difference!

Green Drop Irrigation came with a 3 man crew quoted an exact price which was more then fair and the worked they performed was good and material used was of good quality. I had them do some basic repairs and asked them to quote me for some future expansion of my irrigation system that I will need. Compared to other quotes I found the pricing to be of good value. They were friendly and polite and reviewed my system and made a few minor adjustment at no charge. I will use them again .

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
