I hired Jay because I had two puppies and didn't know how I was going to train them together. Jay gave me lots of helpful tips & helped me to train them. They now know commands such as sit, down, stay & come. Jay answered all of my questions & concerns. My puppies were very excited everytime Jay came to the door & couldn't wait for him to give them treats for a job well done. He made training the puppies fun for my kids too & got them involved. I can truly tell Jay loves what he does.

Mary Jean has totally transformed our dog. We started training during his puppy stage and continued into part of his adolescence, so Mary Jean was able to curb some behaviors very early on. Her positive attitude, accessibility, and willingness to help have made her a joy to work with. Plus, our dog absolutely adores her. Mary Jean trains both the dog and the owner. Her advice about how to reinforce skills on our own was clear and easy to keep up with. Our time with Mary Jean is over for now, but she instilled key skills that will stay with us and with our dog for a very long time. We highly recommend The Canine Cure!

Words can't describe how much Ariana means to us. After rescuing a 72lb AmStaff with behavioral issues, we asked Ariana to help guide us through training our sweet, strong boy. Ariana's tireless patience, humor and knowledge made training our dog a fun, bonding experience instead of a stressful one. Her commitment to ensuring our collective success and a healthy, happy dog was evident in every hour she spent with us. Work with Ariana- she is a joy who also knows her dog training stuff!

Joan is a kind and loving person, and brings these qualities to her superb dog training. She helped Sidney Cha-Cha, our miniature poodle pup, with anxiety and incessant barking. We are grateful for her assistance, and our dogs will miss her presence in our home. Highly recommended!

Anna is such a great trainer, mentor & friend. She is patient and always excited to share her endless knowledge in dog training. Not only did our husky, Kodiak, learn a great deal, but she focused a lot of her training on us. Though our training sessions are over, Anna is always so kind and available when we need to tweak some of Kodiak's mishaps. I would highly recommend BesoMomma anytime!!

Our experience with City Wolves NYC and owner Sean has been outstanding. Sean’s knowledge of training and behavior modification as well as commitment and concern for the dogs is second to none. He is truly passionate about his work and most importantly it doesn’t stop after the training sessions or residency. We adopted a 6-month-old pit mix and after about 4 months he was developing a bunch of bad habits including aggression towards certain dogs, issues with skateboards and scooters and anxiety with small spaces; not to mention his “defiant” behavior at home. We had several “positive reinforcement (treat) trainers” which was not working and things were getting worse by the week. I happened upon Sean training a dog in my neighborhood and it couldn't have come at a better time. The 4-week residency program at City Wolves was a game changer for Otis and us and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a well socialized and behaved pooch. He came back a much more confident dog knowing basic commands (place is my favorite) and has all but eliminated the behavioral and socialization issues. Just as important (maybe more), Sean conducts several one on one workshops with the owners making sure you obtain the necessary skills and knowledge to maintain and advance your dog’s level of training. Sean continues to be an invaluable resource for everything from continued training, behavior adjustments to diet questions and recommendations. Otis has never been better and we are now proud owners of one of the most well behaved dogs in the neighborhood. Highly Recommended City Wolves NYC!

Although my puppy and I had initial training at a storefront situation, I didn't feel that I had a good knowledge of how to help my cockapoo puppy to be a well-behaved and happy dog. Margaret has given us very specific tasks to obtain the right behavior. She is helping me to think like a dog so I can see how my behaviors are interpreted by my puppy. Each hour is full of hands on instruction with plenty of fun for my puppy and me. She is very encouraging and is a delightful person. We have worked on sit, stay, down, wait, hush (for barking) and most importantly to come when called in a situation where my puppy would rather chase that bunny or squirrel. I highly recommend her as a talented and professional dog trainer.

We have not completed our puppy training yet but so far all is going well. Josh connected with my puppy right away as if she knew him already and responded to his reward-based training technique right away. He also gave us a lot of information on how to care for our puppy.

Prima Donna has been taking care of our dog since she was a puppy. When Donna first came to meet with us she was the first person to make our puppy feel comfortable. Now for the past year and a half our dog has has been loving her walks, hikes and play dates with Deb, Donna and Rob. She leaves with her tail wagging and comes home ready for a nap. Also, you get updates and can check out awesome action shots on Facebook. Prima Donna is professional, reliable and most importantly they LOVE animals. I recommend them without reservation and am SO happy to have found them!

We are so happy to have met Debbie! She is an absolute pleasure. She helped me and my fiancee learn how to be the best owners to our new puppy Bodie. She truly cares for each animal she works with and wants the best for both owner and dog. Being a pretty anxious person, Debbie was so patient and helpful. She never left without us fully understanding what is expected and always made sure we could do it on our own. She is a fabulous trainer and person. She even gave us great tips for healthy homemade treats for our dog. I would recommend her 1000 times over to anyone who is looking for help with their dog, new or old.

Rachel has been amazing; I feel so lucky to have found her for my little poodle Prosciutto. Rachel is not only extremely professional, but you can tell how passionate she is about her work. She is clearly invested in your puppy's success in becoming the best dog for your family. She is organized, quick to respond whenever I have a question, and can handle any problem thrown at her. Over the course of only two weeks, my puppy showed more progress than I ever expected her to, and that progress has only continued since! I truly cannot recommend her enough!

Ed has been checking in on our new puppy almost every day for a while now and we've felt really comfortable with him. He provides us with daily feedback through text message so we always know how our pup is doing and if we should expect any surprises upon our return home. He's been great confirming the schedule in advance as well as being available last minute when our schedule has changed unexpectedly. I would highly recommend Ed for your dog walking needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
