Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

What is the difference between a housekeeper and a house cleaner?

Although some house cleaning and housekeeping duties might overlap, a house cleaner is charged with the top-to-bottom cleaning of a home. House cleaner duties typically include basic and deep house cleaning, such as washing and sanitizing countertops, floors, tubs, toilets, kitchens and more.

Housekeepers or maids are hired to lightly clean and maintain certain aspects of the home. This might include dusting, washing dishes, changing sheets, doing some meal preparation and restocking the client’s groceries and personal care products.

It’s also worth noting that a housekeeper or maid is usually one individual employed to a home (sometimes hired as a live-in), while a house cleaner is oftentimes accompanied by a team of cleaners.

What are the different types of house cleaning services I can get?

There are several services offered by professional house cleaning companies, each suited for a different purpose. These services include:

  • Standard cleaning, which is a basic cleaning typically done on a weekly or monthly basis;
  • Deep cleaning, which is a detailed cleaning with more intensive work than a standard clean;
  • Move-in and move-out cleaning, which is a detailed service preparing a home for residents moving in or out;
  • Green house cleaning, which is a service that uses eco-friendly cleaning supplies and products.

Aside from the type of cleaning services available, homeowners may also choose daily, weekly, monthly or one-time services.

How much should you tip maids or cleaning services?

Tipping between 15 and 20 percent is considered an appropriate tip for maids and house cleaners — just as it would with a barber, food delivery driver or taxi operator. During the holidays, you might want to consider tipping a bit more.

It’s important to note that some housekeeping and maid services might include a tip within the service fee, which should be explained to you in the service contract. Talk to house cleaners in your area to find out what's included in their fees.

It was wonderful to have Leyla and Ali (?spl) out to our house today! They are very good at cleaning and it is clear that they enjoy their work. The house was cleaned thoroughly from top to bottom. It smelled and felt so clean when they left. I appreciate the help to free up a few hours of my day! I have already booked the next two cleanings:)

I asked for a deep cleaning of my clients house, wrote accurate square footage, house specs and was told three people would need to be there. No problem I said. Well two showed up for four hours and for the last 1.5 hours I was going back over their work and redoing it. I’m not an exceptionally picky person with cleaning, but I specified to the owner I wanted the wood work and cabinets wiped down. When I asked one of the cleaning ladies she said they did it with the cleaning supplies they had. Well they must have used water because I used my kids babies wipes and got everything off (mostly dust and old food stains by kitchen stove). Super frustrating as this is the first time I’ve ever hired cleaning help and I don’t think I’ll ever do it again.

They flat out know how to clean. Need I say more? Since moving to the area, I was having trouble finding house cleaners who knew how to do the most basic of housekeeping tasks. Things were given the most minimal of attention, if any, even after reminders. This is not the case with this crew. They do a complete and thorough job.

Hired to have a move out clean done 5/9/22. My husband and I rented this house to our son and two friends from college while they were in school. The house would need a deep clean, so we went up on 5/8 and cleaned out all the trash and cleaned quite a bit. I took photos on Sunday night before we left around 9:00pm. Shawna showed up at 11:30am on Monday morning. The house has a coded deadbolt so I had texted her the code so she could get in. I did receive photos of items while she was cleaning like the wall behind the stove and fridge and the inside of the fridge. My husband and I arrived at the house around 6:20 that night. We wanted to mulch and paint a small area in the house. They were still there. They stated that they were almost finished and just needed to vacuum the stairs. We stayed outside and started the mulching. Shawna and her helper left. I had a list of things to finish in the house and hanging the decorative towels in the kitchen was on the list. I could not locate the towels which had been on the back of stove. I texted Shawna and she stated that she had moved them when she has pulled the stove out and that the towels were on the counter. They were not. The bathroom scales that were on the floor by the fridge was also missing. I was going to let it go but then realized that the Pur water filter on the kitchen sink was also missing. There were games inside a microwave cabinet missing. We were about to leave the property around 9pm and went to turn off the dining room light. The dimmer knob and plate were gone. Which was there Sunday night when we left. Tuesday morning I get a call from our realtor and was asked where the lockbox and key was. We had left them on the futon in the living room. Also missing now. I don’t recall seeing it on Monday night. I immediately texted Shawna who said she had no idea that she was only in the living room to wash the windows. That she would have to check with her boyfriend about the items. She claims she has no idea where these items went. I just can’t come up with any other scenario has to what happen to the items. They were there on Sunday night (I have photos), the house was secure, the towels were there because she had to move them and all the stuff is gone after they leave? I gave them two stars because she did a good job on the fridge and the bathroom downstairs but I finished up a lot that would have assumed would have been included in a move out clean such as wiping finger prints off white trim work, cleaning the vent fan in the bathroom, wiping the glass on the front door and cobwebs around the dining room window trim. I just wanted to have the house clean in order to have ready to list for sale but didn’t realize I was going to be ‘cleaned out’ of the few items we had left in the house. Her pics of the fridge and behind it and the pics I sent of the items that were there Sunday night and not Monday after they were there. Just want people to have a heads up. Maybe they did maybe they didn’t but the towels and other items didn’t leave the house on their own.

We hired them prior to a open house for sale of our old home. As I was doing other chores and they were cleaning things, the quality looked very good to me at the time. But when my wife was able to get there after her work she was not particularly happy with some of the cleaning. For instance I didn’t notice it but there were cobwebs above the toilet at the ceiling level. That should’ve been definitely cleaned and could’ve been vacuumed very easily. Other areas like a ceramic/electric stovetop that had serious grime that we have NEVER been able to clean was done by them in seconds.

The ladies showed up on time and were very friendly. They went to work right away. The job took longer than expected because the walls were coated with 8 years of heavy cigarette smoke. We ended up rewashing the walls one more time with Murphy's oil soap before we could paint over them. They did make the house smell much better and cleaner, and I believe they did the best they could in 3 hours time. The previous renters left the house extremely dirty. We appreciate them coming out on such short notice and helping us get started fixing up the house to make it livable and sanitary.

Sam was very nice. She did a fine job cleaning, however, I am rather particular and things were overlooked. To be fair, the job right before she came to my house, she ran into some difficulties so was running behind. This may not have been a normal example of her usual work.

I can honestly say, I was excited to meet with Blair. She returned e-mails in a timely manner and answered any questions I had without reserve. We had set up for her to come to our house at 5:45pm this week to do a walk thru and give me a better idea of pricing for bi-weekly cleaning. At 4:30 on the day she was scheduled to come by, she sent me a text message asking if we could reschedule to Friday since she would be in my area. I called her to see what time she would be through since I had another person coming by to do a walk thru estimate on Friday already. Once she found out I was considering another person besides her, she stated that she wasn't interested and was just going to "bow out" and ended the conversation. I can honestly say that I am disappointed as I felt she was a promising fit. So unfortunately I cannot speak about her cleaning skills.

Hiring people off of Thumbtack has always been hit or miss for me, I've gotten good services and I've also gotten ripped off. Ashlee was definitely a good choice. She was running a bit behind and made me aware, which was no issue for me. She showed up with everything she needed and got to work immediately. This is the first time I've had someone else clean my house and Ashlee set the bar pretty high. She was here for a few hours and what she got done in those hours was amazing. I doubt I'd get done what she did in a whole day off. I hung out in my office while she worked. When she was done, she had me check it out before she left and it was great. She organized all my random crap on my counters and couch, got the floor spotless, top to bottom. My kitchen hasn't looked that good since I moved in. And as I was looking at what she did with organizing my random stuff, she moved quite a few things into better places that made way more sense. I was thinking this might just be a one off thing just to get my place looking good but I'm definitely hiring her again.
