Jen was great! She was very reliable and worked hard training our dog and we have already started to see a distinct difference in her behavior. I was skeptical initially because we had other trainers come with very little results. However, this was not the case with her, in one week we have seen a great difference. If you are thinking about using her,I would recommend her without reservation and you will be sure to see results in your pet and work with a knowledgeable professional!

I cannot say enough about how great my experience was with Tom and Kathleen of Abby Lane Dog Training. We hired them to train our then 8-month-old Saint Bernard named Lucy, for the 6-week Basic Obedience training course. They were so patient with me (because I was really the one that needed the training) Lucy picked everything up right away. They really showed me what a smart dog we have! They were both also very patient with our other dog, Alice, who is a very food territorial pug and would try to keep Lucy away from Tom’s dog treats the entire time they were here. They even gave Alice an Achievement Award certificate at the last class so she wouldn’t feel left out, although the only thing Alice achieved during the training was stealing most of Lucy’s treats! We worked on basic commands like sit, down, and come. I also learned how to walk Lucy without her pulling me all over the place, and how to get her to stop and sit when other dogs are walking by. We also fixed some behavior issues that Lucy was just starting to develop. They have so many tips and tricks and you can tell they genuinely care about the well being of your pet and the fact that you and your pet are both happy in the home. I’m so happy I picked Abby Lane. I hope to have them back for further training when Lucy and I are ready.

My dog was very receptive to her and she worked with the dog until the dog understood what she wanted it to do. She also wrote up the protocol of the things we went over so I could continue with the training. My dog has several problems and she addressed all of them. I know it will take a while to reverse my dog's bad habits but I think we have a very good start. She even took my dog for a little walk which was great since I am unable to do that.

Angie has taught me how to handle my dog, and in return, my dog is a much better behaved pet. She really listened to my concerns and made a plan to work on each one of them. I highly recommend Angels in the Infield! Professional, friendly, and very knowledgeable about training dogs (and their people).

My husband and I got our Border Collie (Isis) when he was 8 weeks old. We started training classes with Cindy soon after. Isis is almost 10 years old now.over those nine plus years we went through basic, Intermediate, clicker, canine good citizen, agility, o-gility...pretty much everything Cindy offers. The classes are fun and informative, a great bonding experience for you and your dog. Once we ran out of classes we just kept going back. Cindy is an excellent teacher and trainer. You will learn just as much as your dog if not more. Isis loves going to "school" as we call it. Just saying the word "school" to him makes his ears perk up then he dashes to the back door ready to go. Cindy makes dog training (school) something to look forward to every week. Thanks Cindy.

I would highly refer any friend to Walk This Way. Dianne was punctual, very giving of her time. For the first visit I felt I gained a lot of dog training knowledge. Very friendly and accomplished a lot for a first visit. I will be using Dianne for further training.

Barb is amazing! I had a senior dog that required a lot of medication and specific care. I do not have family in this area to help me with my dog. There were days were I worked long hours or I had to leave town. I would call Barb and she was always willing to help. My dog had an intestinal disease and kidney failure. She took ten different medications a day and at specific times. Barb ALWAYS made sure my dog was taken care of. I knew if my dog needed anything Barb would handle it. Barb was the only person I trusted with her. I don't know what I would do without Barb! She is passionate about her job and is very trusting.

Excellent experience. Gina did a great job walking us through potty training our dogs. She really knows her stuff and the dogs relate well to her. Gina also does a great job with children. She has a former teaching background. As a result, she can really get the dog training points across to the children as well as the owners. Would highly recommend a few sessions with Gina.

Called when they were on their way. Removed a lot of dog waste from the home! So thankful for them so I do not have to do it. My elderly mother uses them as well since she isn't physically able to do it! Would definitely recommend!

About

I have been training dogs for over 25 years. I believe dogs do not do things for no reason. Many times behavioral problems are caused by the repetition and constituency of their family/pet parent. Stopping a behavior as it is a thought verses an action; teach the human to read their dog and understand why the dog is doing what they are doing can normally solves most "bad" dog issues. Some if not all can be controlled by using basic obedience. A strong foundation is the key to success. Obedience and helping pet parents understand their dog is one of the many services I provide. I also offer pet sitting, (your home, small dogs mine as well) IKT ( In kennel training) and I have to say...I love cats and also offer cat sitting:)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?
