Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much should interior painting cost per square foot?

You can expect a 12x12-foot average room with 8-foot ceilings to cost $100 to paint, while a 16x16-foot room with 9-foot ceilings could cost around $175.

To calculate the cost of interior painting per square foot, measure the square footage of wall space and ceiling space of your room. From this, you can estimate the number of gallons of paint needed to cover the wall space and compare it to these figures. You can also ask interior painters near you to provide an estimate before you hire them.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $917 (for one room) to $4,893 (for eight rooms). The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted.

Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards.

In one area, pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much do interior painters charge per hour?

You can expect to pay $50 per hour for interior painting. This price will change depending on a number of factors and may range between $30 and $160 per hour. Some factors include the height of the rooms, the complexity of the painting and more.

For an accurate cost estimate, request quotes from local painters and contractors.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost to hire an interior painter ranges between $200-$2,700. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls.

Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

How long does it take to paint a room?

The length of time it takes to paint a room varies, depending on a couple of factors. For example, the size of the job makes a difference. With a small bedroom, or with only a wall or two that have to be painted, the job can be done in half a day. Larger jobs take longer.

Also, if there are several different colors being used, the job may take longer, as one may have to dry before the other is applied. A 12-by-12 room with one color may take a morning. With multiple colors, the job may stretch into the afternoon.

Before you hire an interior painter near you, ask them how long it will take to paint the room(s) in your home.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

Should you wash walls before painting?

Yes, in most cases you’ll want to clean your wall before painters start. Washing walls before painting helps get rid of dirt and grime that could affect how the paint adheres, including primer. You can do this using a wall washer, especially if the top of the wall is hard to reach.

The best way to clean walls is to use a solvent that won’t affect the surface underneath. Some experts recommend using a sponge, warm water and/or a mild detergent or soap. Abrasive washing may remove some of the current pain.

Cleaning painted walls should be done with care. If you’re not comfortable with washing the walls yourself, consider hiring a house cleaner near you.

Charles did an outstanding job painting the interior of my home. I was a bit apprehensive about painting the wood trim and doors. I absolutely do not regret my decision. The quality of the job was outstanding. They white doors and trim really contrast with the interior wall color. I would rehire Charles and his team in heartbeat.

We had a great experience with Mullins Fine Line. We had the entire upstairs of our house painted. They were easy to work with, reasonably priced and did a great job with the painting. This was a big job as we had not only the ceiling and walls but also doors and trim. I would be comfortable recommending them to anyone looking for quality interior painting.

Charles came out and provided an estimate and discussed the details of what I wanted and gave advice on paint types. The following week Charles and his partner were able to start my fairly extensive interior painting project. The estimate for the work was fair and the quality of work and attention to detail far exceeded my expectations. Charles and Billy were prompt every morning and had me walk around before they left the final day to look for any imperfections (which there were none!). Highly recommend for interior painting needs! (See attached picture for the work completed for the oak stair banister and oak trim around doors/floor that were painted white along with the walls)

Jeff did an excellent job painting woodwork and walls in three rooms of my home. He was very pleasant and helpful (giving suggestions on color since I had no idea), and was very professional. I look forward to calling on him again for any interior painting jobs I may consider.

I needed quick turnaround for an interior paint job, but I also needed it to fit within my budget and be high quality. The Paint and Rollers crew delivered quality work, and were CLEAR COMMUNICATORS! That’s a rare quality in contractors, and it made addressing issues as they arose fast and painless, with no lost time. I highly recommend this family crew for their work and professionalism.

I contacted True Blue for a full interior house painting, on fairly short notice. I got a fast, accurate quote, and the job was completed on time, so as not to interfere with ongoing contractor work. Jason helped me pick out colors, and the workers were thorough, neat and professional. The house is beautifully done: paint is absolutely even, and the price was very fair. Really, really excellent work.

Sebastian and his crew at Custom Paint did an absolutely amazing job painting both the inside and outside of our new home. They managed to schedule us very quickly and complete their work very quickly, and the work they did is top notch. They go above and beyond for their customers, making sure the work is quality and the customer is happy. Would definitely highly recommend them for anyone looking to paint either an exterior or interior space. We are hoping to use them again when we complete renovations on our house!

Robert did a fantastic job on painting the interior of our house so that we could list it for selling. He did a thorough and detailed job in a very timely manner and was able to troubleshoot and correct issues we had with our walls. We have referred him to several of our friends and family and can't wait to work with him again!

I had one room painted including the ceiling. Overall, I am pleased with the physical paint job (photos for reference); the painter was very polite and honest with me & wore a mask the entire time. However, there was no cleanup done outside of asking if I had a trash bin to throw out the used pan (so, there was drywall chips and dust in piles on the floor); what was more upsetting is the painter got what I’m assuming is spackle all over the freshly stained bedroom door (so, after removing the spackle I now have to restain parts of the door) and paint droplets on the windowsills. Not the end of the world, but I likely will not rehire. I have hired out for all interior painting and have never had this problem (usually they always cleanup, are careful with where they put their hands...etc); pricing wasn’t competitive enough for me to overlook the mishaps.

Working with Charles and his crew for my apartment's new paint job was a pleasure. Charles showed up every day at least 15 minite early, in military fashion, and began each day discussing the details of what would be done throughout the process. Charles also goes above the job description, he touched up some interior areas that he noticed while acoping oit the job site. Distinguished Painting? Very true to the name I'll say, Charles and his crew are a pleasure to work with and I will be recommending them to my associates for projects in the future for sure.

Rick and his team from Painter1 of Columbus did a wonderful job painting the entire interior of our new home. Rick was responsive from day 1 and never lacked in communication. His team was very thorough and very very quick. A few imperfections here and there, but overall, we are very satisfied and would recommend Rick and his team to anyone looking for a great experience from start to finish.

I had a great experience with this company. They were very responsive. Came out very promptly to give an estimate for painting the interior of the majority of our home. They did the job in about 5 hours max (entire first floor, stairwell and master bed and bath) I couldn’t believe the speed they worked at to get it all painted and that didn’t affect the quality of their work either. They did a fantastic job, accommodated all of my requests and were very friendly. On top of that they said if we had any problems to just let them know, however, after a full walk-through, I didn’t find any issues with their work. I’m thoroughly impressed and will definitely go to them for any future paint jobs. I highly recommend.

Daniel is very professional and patient. He did such an excellent job that we have other jobs in line for him and he is a definite 5 star professional! He is very trustworthy and reasonable and I now feel like he’s part of our extended family. In fact, I have recommended him to my family and friends and he is our designated painter from now on. He has extensive experience in his craft and he provided us with useful recommendations. He sanded and painted dents and holes in the walls. He’s great at both interior and exterior painting which will increase the value of our home.

Myers Custom Finishes took great care to protect our fixtures and merchandise as they painted our interior store space. Before work began, they walked through the expectations and clarified any unique requirements. They worked efficiently and with attention to detail. All equipment and materials were cleaned up at the end of each work shift. They showed up on time and conducted themselves in a friendly, professional manner at all times. When the job was completed they walked the areas again with us to ensure expectations were met and we were satisfied. I would recommend this company.

I knew Jeff would do a great job when it took him 1.5 hours just to assess the space and provide a quote. He approached the job with meticulous detail, giving meaning to the name Quality Interior Painting. He shared expert opinions where appropriate, but was never pushy or demanding about how the job should be done. While crews of 5 may have completed the job in a day, Jeff's solo week-long process was well-planned and carefully executed. We would hire him again in a heartbeat. Thanks, Jeff!

We hired Advance painting for an interior painting job in a newly purchased home. Vance was very accommodating and responsive. He came to the house the day after we closed and had painters there the next day to start work. The contract stated 2 coats of paint would be applied and all switch plates would be removed. The painters sent were very nice and we enjoyed having them in the home. After the job was complete we noticed more and more bare spots on the walls. On closer inspection we realized only 1 coat had been done and none of the switch plates had been removed. We also found where a carbon monoxide detector that was plugged into the wall was just painted around. We moved the detector to a new outlet and now have a large white square on the wall. We contacted Vance and he came back out and agreed a 2nd coat had not been done. He told us one of the painters he had working at our house had recently been fired for telling Vance he had done 2 coats when only doing 1. Vance told us he would send someone out to do a 2nd coat the week of 8/31/15. No one ever came and Vance has not responded to our calls and emails since. We are currently working with an attorney to hopefully recoup some of the money we paid for an unfinished job. Please use great caution in hiring this business.
