I needed to have a huge mulberry tree taken down that was growing through the power lines in the narrow space between my back yard fence and my very large shed. Russell is certified to work around power lines and has been doing it for at least ten years. He is skilled, efficient, knowledgeable, respectful and helpful. (When I mentioned that I had limited space for planting vegetables he pointed out an ideal place in my yard that I hadn't thought about.) He also removed a large limb from another tree that was angled over another wire, and trimmed tall arborvita that was growing through cable and telephone wires. In addition, he removed a shrub and several saplings growing in various places including the middle of a rose bush and the middle of snake grass. He was wonderful to work with, did an excellent job according to what I needed done, and his quote was comparable to quotes from other companies. I chose Russell because I felt he was honest about the work. He advised me about how to talk to the power company who was responsible for keeping the tree trimmed at no cost to me. My attempts to have them deal with the tree up until that time had been unsuccessful, but this time they came and removed a few branches. Russell knew that he would not have the job if the power company had done what they should have done. I highly recommend Russell and his service.

These guys were outstanding! Quick quote and service, showed up right on time, did a really impressive job taking down an 80 foot tree between 2 houses, and cleaned everything up very well. Much less expensive than the national chain arborists too. I've already recommended to friends!

Removed a tree, several shrubs, and trimmed some other trees, then ground the stumps. Got the quote, and about 10 minutes after saying lets do it, it was all done but the stump grinding. Wow so fast. It was great to get this done so quick.

Very pleased with the flexibility, dedication and end result of Jason and his crews work. We have a lot of beds which equals a lot of weeds, trimming and mulch. I feel the price was fair and commensurate to other quotes, but we ended up using First Response because of their reviews. I will use them again. Thanks Jason.

A lovely service and we'll definitely use them again, schedule permitting. Our backyard was crrrrazy overgrown because of an injury and they came and perked it right up. Some weeds were left behind and some grass wasn't emptied from our mower - otherwise nice job.

Obdullio and his crew were great! All the guys were very professional and polite. They removed a large tree in a small yard- a tree that other tree trimmers weren't interested in. His price was by far the best and he treated our property like it was his own. We would highly recommend Sunny Valley.

I had to have a dead tree removed from my back yard. The men that came out to do it were very nice. My dogs also go potty in the back yard, even found the guys playing with them. It was really a mess getting that big tree down but the guys had it looking like there was never a tree there. I would definitely use them again.

Our house was surrounded by 7 trees, all very big. Needless to say we have had a lot of work done by several company's over the last ten years, we are very satisfied with the work G2G tree service did for us. Did not talk a whole lot but when they did they were very respectful and they kno what they were doing. I would recommend them to anybody. And the price was very reasonable. Thank you G2G tree service !!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
