"Atonn was WONDERFUL! I wanted a storybook themed wedding and atonn delivered. He was there to answer all my questions and to encourage us. To help with our vows he sent us questionnaires to fill out, which truly helped my husband. The ceremony made everyone cry and I loved how personalized it was. He is an incredible officiant and I intend to recommend him to any of my friends who are getting married. :)"

"Having someone that was in it for the long hall was fanstaic. Wanting to make sure our day was truely special. I love how Maureen really took the time to get to know my husband and I and help make our vows much more personal and more like us. Any questions or issues with my wedding planning I was so happy I could turn to her. Even if it was a silly hair look issue. She really made our wedding day even more special then i could of expected. I already have her booked again to do a renewal ceremony for our 10 year Anniversary."

"I am so grateful to Pastor Jeffery Lavalette for officiating our wedding!!! From the first email from him in response to our inquiry we felt a sense of sincerity and personable interest and we couldn't wait to meet him!!! A week later we met with him and we spent an hour chatting and getting to know each other. He took a genuine interest in our lives and upcoming wedding. And on our wedding day the ceremony was totally amazing!!! We both were teary eyed the whole way through!!! He incorporated things that we had told him about each into the ceremony and it was simply beautiful!!! Many that attended our wedding said that they had never witnessed such a beautiful wedding ceremony!! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts Pastor Jeff!! We are planning on visiting your church soon!! Love, Robert & Jackie Bruce ❤"

"We used Lynette as our officiant for our wedding last month. When you meet Lynette, it's impossible not to like her. She's the sweetest, most kind-hearted person and she doesn't judge you based on your beliefs. We really enjoyed that about her and felt that she was very professional. Overall, we had such a memorable ceremony and we owe this to her because we had the option of choosing what we wanted to do so that it fit us. I would definitely recommend her services to anyone that wants to break free traditional ceremonies (although she does these too)."

"Rev. Nicole officiated my daughter's wedding. I could not imagine someone doing a more conscientious, professional job. She took the time to really work with the couple, helping them through the process of preparing not only for the wedding but for married life. She masterfully integrated personal aspects to make the service such a touching tribute to their love. Her meticulous preparation was so evident as the service went perfectly. She was poised and at times funny - always striking the right chord at the right time. I could not possibly recommend her any more highly."

"Conrad Marsili made our entire wedding experience a very memorable one. My husband and I met with Conrad prior to our special day to decide if this was the route we wanted to take or do ceremony in a church. Instantly, we knew that we both wanted Conrad to officiate our ceremony. He made us feel at ease and did exactly what we wanted. Matt and I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day, getting married near the water front along with the sun shining bright. I would highly recommend Conrad Marsili. Thank you so much for everything. We will always cherish our wedding day with you!"

"Jerry Rice is the most authentic Ozzy Osbourne impersonator I have ever seen! He shows up to his gigs in character and doesn't break character until he gets home. Not only does he look like the real Ozzie, he sounds like the real Ozzie. Jerry never misses a chance to have a picture taken with a fan. He always has time for those who appreciate what he does. If you're an Ozzy Osbourne or Black Sabbath fan and are thinking about doing something different with your wedding ceremony, having Jerry Rice marry you as Ozzie Osbourne is one of the most unique ways to get married. Jerry Rice is an ordained minister and has performed 14 marriage ceremonies to date over the past two years. Jerry Rice is also available as Ozzy Osbourne for special appearances at store openings, parties or whatever event you may want to promote. He's guaranteed to get a reaction! I give Jerry Rice 5 stars for his appearance, performance and unique ability to generate interest."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.
