Great experience, would hire these guys again. Chandler and Noah run a small biz so they don't have the infrastructures of big moving companies (i.e. 24/7 receptionist, etc) but don't let that deter you. These guys showed up on time and do a great job. Moving is obviously a painful process most of the time and that was made worse by the fact that I was told all my stuff might not fit into the truck I got (but it was the biggest truck available). I was further told it would take some expert packers to make it work. Well, Chandler and Noah got the job done with room to spare (a lot of room--I could have fit more) so by that definition these guys are super experts. I was moving several hundred miles and everything came out the other side without any problems. In short, these guys know what they are doing and are expert packers. One final thing deserves mention, at the beginning of the move they said I would need some ratchet ties to keep everything in place. However, unlike mainstream moving companies, they didn't try to sell me some ridiculously marked up materials they brought with them and advised I run to the store to grab some for $10 while they moved. Good luck finding movers more honest than that. They were polite and friendly yet kept to the task at hand. The experience couldn't have gone much better.

I hired Charles and his team to move me from Columbus to Boston, Mass. Other moving companies had given exorbitant quotes or said they were too busy, but Charles took on the job only a week before the move, at a lower price than any of the big, corporate companies. His estimate was very close to what the final cost ended up being. The load and unload times were exactly what I asked for, and the team worked very quickly and with care for my belongings. I would recommend Incredible Hulk Movers to anyone.

Terrell and his team did an AMAZING job. Not a single thing was broken or scratched, which is not the case when I have used large "reputable" moving companies in the past. Not only was he reliable and timely, but he also provided competitive pricing. When I realized I was going to be done with my packing earlier than expected, he made himself available. I will definitely use his services in the future! I wish him the best on his business.

After getting a few quotes from various moving companies, we chose Grandview Moving based simply on "I felt comfortable with them after just a brief phone call with Matt". And yes, his estimated rate was less than his competitors. With that said, my decision was the right one because Matt, Ryan, and Justin are true professionals. These 3 guys exceeded my expectations. They worked non stop, very fast, very effecient, and extremely respectful. My items were treated with care and when moving the items into my new home, they were extremely cautious not to cause any damage or markings of any kind. I would give Matt, Ryan, and Justin 10 stars and will recommend them to anyone I know who's moving. Thanks again guys, you're awesome!!

Dennis, Jake & Zac showed up READY TO WORK! In the past, other moving companies have left us waiting up to an hour or two after scheduled start time. Jake called 30 minutes before their arrival, and were even early. By time he and I were done with paperwork and the formals, Dennis and Zack had a 1/2 row loaded into the truck. The move went fast, smooth, and with as little stress as a move can be. The entire crew went above and beyond to ensure that everything was placed where we wanted it, and even assisted with reassembly of the beds. They were polite and courteous to both my husband, and myself. A+ Guys! Thanks. Thanks! Michael & Andy

MVM was phenomenal! More specifically, Levi and RJ were phenomenal! Very reasonably priced and very hard working. When doing something hourly I feared they might milk the clock, but they did anything but that! I even had more to move than I expected and they happily completed that as well. If you're looking for a great moving company, do yourself a favor and hire MVM!

I've been working with First Responder for over a year and through a series of projects. I find them very easy to work with and accommodating of my many changes. Jason understands what I'm trying to accomplish in my yard and he has been very helpful in moving me forward. We have a long way to go but, I am relying on them to help me get there. I also find it very easy to refer them to others because they are courteous, responsive, professional, and flexible.

This is the one of the best moving companies to hire out. When you seek their services, they offer perfection. I tried them out and the experience was such an amazing one. The whole process was stress-free and seamless. There were no cases of lost properties. Everything, including my precious books and fragile items, were intact during and after the relocation. It made me so happy. Their quality of work is astounding and I recommend them.

The best moving company in the area!!! The crew arrived on time and worked very efficiently. I was concerned that the hourly rate might cause them to work slowly, but this was not the case. While loading/ unloading the guys jogged back to the house/ truck to retrieve the next piece of furniture. They transported everything, even carrying some heavy furniture to the second floor, without damaging anything! The estimate they gave was accurate, the rate was reasonable, nothing was damaged, everything was moved to the correct room, and the furniture was reassembled perfectly.

Great customer service & moving crew. We checked into a few different moving companies & got estimates. Some companies just gave us a phone estimate and didn't even want to send someone to see our home. How are you going to give me a correct price if you have no idea what we have? Andrews set-up an appointment for an in-home estimate. The estimator was very informative & explained everything well. She definitely knew her stuff. Most companies lowballed and told us it would take 2-4 hours. Our estimator explained how they estimate time, our move took 7 hours to complete from start to finish with Andrews, which is exactly the timeframe the estimator told us. The crew worked so hard all day!! I was impressed. They also offer full value protection to insure your furniture, in case something is damaged, which put my mind at ease, but thankfully everything went great & nothing was broken. They wrapped & protected everything so well. The crew was extremely nice & professional. They didn't complain about heavy furniture or stairs. I couldn't have asked for a more professional company or crew. They cost a little more, than some of the smaller mom & pop moving companies, but with moving you definitely get what you pay for. We will definitely call them next time we move. Thanks for everything!!

The overall experience was pretty good. We were under the impression that when we agreed upon a 9am start time that the movers would be AT our location at 9am. Unfortunately, we did not get started moving until close to 10am after they got the truck from UHaul and arrived at our place. The movers were friendly & hard working although a bookshelf was broken in the process and we were only given $20 off even though the bookshelf cost more than $20.

Terrell, along with Jeffrey and Henry, were kind, professional, and thoughtful. The person we moved is elderly. Their patience and understanding of the situation made this a smooth, calm process. Terrell and I were in constant contact to coordinate this move - very prompt, professional communication via Thumbtack. Thanks, gentlemen, for coming on a holiday weekend. I definitely recommend Terrell's company to all in need of moving!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
