Paul was one of the best contractors that I've ever worked with (from any trade). He showed up when he said he would and got straight to work. He was self sufficient and didn't bother me at all during the entire job. Even when the scope of the project increased Paul didn't complain or raise the price. My chimney look immaculate. I happily paid more than what he quoted me. I'll be going with Paul for all of my masonry needs for as long as he's in the business. If you're considering going with him for a project he's well worth it.

Danny and crew, came in and did a great job with my basement remodel project. Originally I hired another contractor but wasn't happy with the work and then contacted Danny, who gave me a good quote and the updated finishing touches for my project. My basement looks very nice. I recommend Danny for basement remodeling.

John was punctual & professional from start to finish. I couldn’t even get other companies to come give me an estimate until 3 weeks from now! A leak in our bedroom ceiling was not something we were comfortable waiting on. He came out, assessed the damage, explained the process & the price & was able to come back & do the repairs within 24 hrs of our approval. We are very satisfied as this has been the ONLY company that has actually responded in a timely manner & completed the work at a reasonable price since we moved here 9 months ago. For whatever reason - we have not had good experiences with contractors in the last 9 months some relocating. We will be calling Integrity from now on with all future repairs:) thank you!

I had some rotting wood trim around my front windows as a result of shoddy workmanship and inferior materials used by the builder. The wood rot compromised the seal of my window. Our initial thoughts and what Darrin planned on was a simply replacing the wood trim and remediation the seal around the widows. However, once Darrin started working, he discover the wood exterior was rotten on both sides of the Windows to the studs. Darrin showed me every discovery he made so I knew I was likely in store for more than I had originally planned. The result was removal of over 3/4 of the siding; repair of the wood exterior; wrapping the wood exterior in Tyvek as it was not previously wrapped: replacing the wood trim with quality cedar; putting the trim back and finally sealing the wood trim to ensure no future leaks. Not only was Darrin diligent and thorough in his work, but surprisingly affordable for the amount of work he completed. I would not recommend the builder (Rockford Homes) but have already recommended Darrin to a co-worker with similar issues from the same builder.

I'm so happy I hired these guys. They were extremely professional, more prompt with their schedule and quote than any other person/group, and they did a fantastic job. They completed the job to perfection and very quickly at that. Beyond being professional and having excellent workmanship, these guys were thoughtful enough to notice something that my trailer was missing and supplied it themselves and wouldn't accept any payment for it. I am planning on hiring them for any future projects.

Sam did an excellent job remodeling our basement. Including flooring, lighting, installation of French door, stonework on the bar, bathroom remodel and drywall repair. It's now my favorite room in the house! I spend the majority of my time in my basement. I highly recommend Sam for any of your remodeling needs. I trusted him in my home. He is neat and picked up after himself everyday. I'm a difficult person to please when it comes to remodeling and he exceeded and went past my expectations.

Brenda and BKR do great work at a great price and always on schedule. I use them to complete full renovations on homes that I buy and resell. They do it all from the exterior roofs to the interior kitchens and baths as well as flooring throughout the entire home. I have been working with them for over 2 years on multiple job sites (from rental houses downtown to executive homes in Dublin) and never had one issue. If you need a contractor that is professional and actually get things done on time then this is the one to call.

My three children go to the daycare this company was hired by to build a new privacy fence and the playground reconstruction. The playground was somewhat unsafe before the renovations. Now the children are 100% safe and they absolutely love their new playground they can actually play on now. We have since contacted the owner who we met at the daycare since he actually works with his guys, to do our back deck and privacy fence. Love their work! The pictures I have are before the install of the new playground. I'll post those when I get them.

Nathan did a very good job on installing a new tub, tile, faucet, and built a cubby hole in tub area. He also overlayed the bathroom ceiling, finished, and painted. Very nice job. I would recommend Precision, Remodeling & Design to all my friends. Thank you, Nathan.

I was especially impressed with the level of communication of this team. Also, I appreciated the fact that they brought up questions that I did not think to ask. Miine was an unusual project, but they worked with me all the way. Very impressed. Thank you.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
